Tbh for all this pitch talk, it's barely done anything out of the ordinary since lunch, just one or two which gripped. Smith in particular looks pretty comfortable simply because he's decisive in his footwork and trust his defence.

Atkinson's doing likewise, and this pitch probably needed this kind of response. Bat time and let it deteriorate. Playing straight looks the way to go, plenty of singles on offer down the ground.

I'm still giving Stokes the benefit of the doubt outside Asia (averages 42 there since he became captain) but he needs his bowling in these conditions or there are serious questions marks because he's pretty much a no8 in Asia.

England has three spinners, why can't he work with them on his spin game.

He's never been a natural milker, he struggles to get off the crease in defence, and he's not a natural at attacking from the start of his innings. Lots of problems for an ageing batsman.

The rest of our batsmen need to give their heads a wobble, Duckett and now Smith are showing that it's not a minefield it just needs batsmen to put a bit of application in instead of trying to smash the **** out of it constantly.

I thought everyone here liked him, I dared to say he didn't play enough substantial test innings and got a pile on.

Like him as a player. Limited and definitely not an aesthetics batsman but he's up for a scrap and plays consistently at the high end of his threshold in all formats. Keeps his spirits up while in the field, the type you'd want in the trenches alongside you.

Behind the stumps, the relentless appealing stuff that very obviously isn't out is a bit much after a while, and I think he's quite an overbearing personality in general.

Down the ground off the front foot is the way to go. Root, Brook and Pope didn't adapt to the pitch. Crawley just played a nothing shot and Stokes is cooked v spin.
