What would've been the point in declaring overnight? It's not like time is short. He probably should've declared the moment Strauss and Ambrose were out, but ideally we'd have batted on and set 600. Just because no team has chased over 400 doesn't mean you should set less than you can set. Winning in the last session of the last day is no different to winning in the second session of the last day. The game lasts 5 days.

The overhead conditions that saw NZ's seamers do so little that they started with the spinners?
Vaughan declaring overnight would just have wasted some time that could've been used for run-scoring. It will make no difference to the match result - it can't.
