***Official*** Australia in England (The Ashes)

Well, if Macgill was in, then the pitch would really have to turn, which it doesn't look like doing. Also, McGrath and Lee could be forced to bowl extended opening spells (which wouldn't be good considering their injuries) in order to get the ball spinning.
It wouldn't really have to turn no, just a bit for Macgill to be more effective than Gillespie.

At 80-odd for one, it`s still a very aggressive field.
Good point. I think Ricky definately feels he can get these two out, and the field shows that. Vaughan is looking a bit ominous here. Trescothick usually slips up eventually, but if Vaughan gets set he can be very hard to get out, and could make the big score England need to anchor this innings. 400 odd should be par on this pitch I think. Anything less and England will be a bit disappointed.

He's so obviously washed up yet no doubt in a minute we'll hear.

"Gillespie back to his best here" 8-)

Can't believe the selectors missed a trick and played him instead of Macgill, they deserve to lose the series on that folly alone.

because the groundsman said so. and i'd say a groundsman knows what he says.
if i didnt had a mate coming over, i would go to a pub and watch...arg.

Why does everyone keep saying that?
Because they think it's better to play a clearly ineffective seamer rather than a second spinner who gives it a big rip on any surface and has troubled England in the past.

Honestly, what is your obsession with Macgill? Warne can more than adequately cover Australia's spin needs, and it's much more important to have another seamer in there so that two guys who were in hospital last week don't have to bowl all day whenever Ponting wants a seamer.

I can certainly see the argument for including Kasprowicz over Gillespie, and from purely a "must win THIS match" perspective that would be the correct decision, but picking Macgill on a wicket that won't turn all that much for a couple of days and only two seamers would be ludicrous.

Anyway, England's session. They saw off excellent opening spells with only one wicket, and after that Vaughan in particular played very well. If the ball keeps reversing after lunch though, watch for McGrath and Lee to be quite dangerous.

This so called super series or whatever it's called that was supposed to give Australia a challenge is going to lose a lot of it's appeal when Australia lose the series here.

Maybe they'll scrap it or change it to England V the rest.

Was certainly interesting to see the ball reverse in the first session, England utilised it far better than Australia last game, so I hope that trend is repeated here.

Excellent bowling by Lee and McGrath

Insipid performances by Gillespie and Ponting.

Ponting seems to have a game plan and never deviates from it even when it's wrong.

Take today.

Lee bowls 5 overs in his opening spell as usual and is replaced by Gillespie as usual.

Trouble is, Lee had just taken a wicket bringing Vaughan to the crease.

Vaughan had been bowled in each of his 2 previous innings by Lee.

You have to think that the last person he wants bowling to him is Lee instead Gillespie plays Vaughan into form.

Meanwhile, Australia's most dangerous bowler, Warne, stands at slip twiddling his thumbs because Ricky's black book say "Jason to have 7 overs from that end."

Dumb

BTW, I hope Tresco hasnt bought a ticket in Powerball, with the amount of luck he's had today, he's a shoe-in for the 15 mill.
