mediocrity away is one thing and is pretty explicable given the sort of bowler which he is - those numbers in england are just mindboggling though, averaging thirteen more against my lot than he does at home generally (and if you took australia out of the home average it'd obviously be even more still). this is so where australia have not exactly been the strongest of tourists during his career and have had coaches like lehmann whose calling card was dreadful performances against the moving ball.

so anyway, a thread for performances or records or what have you that defy all reasonable expectations or require further investigation before they're explicable. we're looking for the sasquatches, the bigfoots and so on

He will never be a Malcolm Marshall

stealing this as discussion from the march thread so as to juice the tyres of my one:
Anderson has never been especially effective against Aus outside of a few isolated spells anyway. He hasn't looked terrible, just lacked penetration on mostly unhelpful surfaces against batsmen who know his tricks inside out and are happy to sit on him.

Away record is decent post 06-07, which is a tour he shouldn’t have been on. Not saying we discount it, it’s part of his record, but adds some context. And it’s still not as good as his general record

Home record, I think he did well in 13 and 15, 09 his overall record was surprisingly bad when you consider he had a couple of really good games at Lords and Edgbaston. Haven’t verified the 13 stats though

Been saying this for years. Just nowhere near as good of a bowler as his fans always try to claim he is

His home series were:

2009 - 12 wickets @ 45.16
2013 - 22 wickets @ 29.59
2015 - 10 wickets @ 27.50
2023 - 4 wickets @ 82.00

Yeah it is interesting that he hasn't had one really great home series against Australia. Even that 2013 series was off the back of a 10-fer at Trent Bridge and he didn't do super well in any of the other Tests.

Away from home, for reference:

2006/07 - 5 wickets @ 82.60
2010/11 - 24 wickets @ 26.04
2013/14 - 14 wickets @ 43.92
2017/18 - 17 wickets @ 27.82
2021/22 - 8 wickets @ 23.37

Last two series genuinely kind of impressive in terms of his average. Which is interesting as I'm not sure he bowled super well in either series. His SR was about 4 overs worse than 2010/11 in both series so that might influence my perception.

2017/18 was impressive for sure. Bowled quite well IMO and on some unhelpful pitches
2021/22 not really. Had bowling-friendly conditions and his efforts were about average at best
