Muslim Question

Pardon my ignorance, but on the weekend we had a young Muslim playing for us, and he said he was fasting and was not allowed to eat or drink water until sun set (I think). I new that people of the Muslim faith were not allowed to eat, but did not know they could not even drink water.

My question: with the Pakistan team having so many players of the Muslim faith, do they also refrain from drinking or eating during matches?

I was thinking there must be a real chance of a player suffering from dehydration, and there must also be an advantage to the opposition.

Its again ! Anyways Fasting is there in almost every survived religion .
Fasting does not apply upon one if
1. Is traveling
2. Is on medication / sick
3. Dont even play if want to keep a proper fast because fasting is completed with intense prayers + if you do wanna play and its kinda extremely important then do not fast .
4 . It is an extreme practice to fast in extreme conditions and also performing extreme acts like playing under hot hot weather and bla .
5 . Fasting means one is not drinking and eating from dawn till dusk . And gotta eat and drink properly while committing and breaking the fast .
6. The self Muslim hood is not improved in the eyes of God if wanna be extreme with the fasting

Thanks for that. I never realised that one would have a choice :)

There was someone on our team who was also fasting, he took a pack of chips for after sunset though. He opened the batting and bowling as well and did quite well, so performance-wise, I don't think he suffered.

He says that it finishes next Monday, meaning it has been a month since he started fasting.

Javed Mindad was fasting throuout the 1992 WC, pretty amazing considering he was 35 at that time too and he did end up being i think 2nd or 3rd highest scorer of the tournament

Considering a lot of the matches were day-nighters, it wouldn't have been so bad, would it?

Trust me its not as tough as some people think, sure for the first 2-3 days you might feel it but once you get use to it then there is absolutley no problem.

I've had Muslim mates play while they've been fasting. Mighty effort IMO, I'd find it extremely difficult. Interesting to see Yousuf doing it at international level, ultimate respect.

i am muslim from afghanistan. for me fasting only first day gives me hard time. ofcourse i dn't play cricket and last time i played cricket was like five years ago. i don't know how it feels for musim cricketers when they fast at the same time and play cricket. i work out but in ramadan month i don't work out i put more attention in my fasting and prayers. ya so first day is hard for me the next days it just goes by so fast.

My little brother plays basketball while fasting. I don't have his endurance and stamina to do that while fasting myself. Hakeem Olajuwon, former NBA star of the Houston Rockets, use to fast while playing NBA games. I think that took some doing. NBA games are played at an intense, fast pace. I think he would've been better off not fasting during game days. He could've hurt himself.

I guess it is not that hard either and actualy I love it when it is like that . Iftari feels so so so nice . I used to play field hockey in that hot sun along with the fast ..
I think no matter how much bad you are under that sun one huge jug of Lassi does all the trick in the end :) !!

I don't have any doubts about your capabilities of fasting, all I meant to say was that fasting in June/July would be lot more difficult as compared to what it is these days.:)

That is a fact .Think about us here in Canada ,hehe . My uncle does his night job and when he comes back home in the morning then he eats a full fledge meal and then he sleeps tightly and when wakes up ,he takes shower and gets ready to break the fast .. hehe !
Well once one gets used to it then it is just part of a routine honestly and it is not that hard . But it is quite true that weather and job routines have a huge effect on the fasting . But I guess we should not take it in the stomach sense only . The person has to be honest during the fast , avoid all the routine itsi bitsis that he does . And not only the food but also one single lie can break the fast ,Its not just about the stomach all the time !!!hehe
