4 years later than it should've happened but a great career nonetheless. Batting, keeping, captaincy all top tier in the 50 over format. And that six arguably the greatest moment in Indian cricket.

Today is not the day to talk about his last 4 years or so, today is the day to talk about 2004 Dhoni , 2008 Dhoni or 2011 Dhoni , the one guy who as long as he was there, the match was not over, the one who was the favorite if a bowler needed to defend 20 in the last over against him, the lightning quick stumper, the one who re-ignited the craze for long hair in India (something I'll always count against him as I just couldn't get that look with my rubbish hairline) , the man who could hit the ball into the next country if he so wished, the guy who had the same face whether he lost or won, the man who you knew was born a leader and looked the part.

Thank you MS, for your career and that 2011 Six.

Whatever it takes!!!
He was one of the rare cricketers from the subcontinent, especially India, to whom the game was NOT everything. It helped him put lot of things in perspective, IMO and also helped him with the unorthodoxy and the street smart ways he played the game. Like everything that had its minuses, but the pluses far outweighed those.

Also have to love his timing. With a world of cricket fans getting pissed off at the English rain, he has given us something else to focus on until they find out where their sun went.

The Tiger King
What an amazing LO overs player, one of the best ever.

I am glad he finally took the call.

ATG player and captain in LOs. Captain cool really, totally unfazed in so many high pressure situations.

Thanks for the memories.

Think we should not under rate his test career. He was not the same in the longer format but he still was a very good keeper batsman and a great captain even in the test arena. Being one of the ATGs of LO cricket should not overshadow a very good test cricketer and a great test captain.

I always felt he had something special, beyond cricket talent, that made his team better. Its no coincidence that India reached 1 only after he became the captain.
He had that weird Midas touch in his limited overs captaincy. Seemingly bizarre decisions like giving the ball to Joginder Sharma in the last over, or a hopeless Ishant with 4 overs to go in the Champions Trophy final when they were cruising seemed to come off for him.

Was surprisingly good with the bat in England where you'd have expected him to struggle. Very dependable batsman and terrific keeper in Asia, struggled with the gloves when the ball swung late.

Didn't he make 70-odd coming in at like 5/20 or something after Anderson and Broad had gone on a new ball rampage on a cloudy morning? In the series where Kohli averaged like 5 or something.

Yeah, should qualify that very good and great there are more from an Indian context but honestly, I would take him in the current side in a heartbeat and in most sides India have had in tests across the years. So....

IIRC, he had several outings in the 40-60 range in that series when the rest of the squad embarrassed themselves. At least 3-4. Pure grit.

Agree. 38 average as a keeper batsman nothing to scoff at. I just didn't mention it because he retired like 6 years ago.
