Hadlee from 78 (ie. basically exactly Marshall's career) was taking nearly 5.5WPM @ 20. I can't be arsed to check, but I think he may not have had a single series that was mediocre, let alone poor, for over a decade. Away is 6WPM@ 18.x.

These stats are unholy.

The main reason most of us reckon Marshall was the GOAT is because of his nearly statiically flawless record. Is his record better than Hadlee's?

I think what separates Marshall from Hadlee for me personally, are his 3 SC tours, 2 in Pakistan and 1 in India. There, against some pretty Strong batting line-ups in some really flat conditions, he ran amok. Hadlee had 2 good tours of India and was alright in Pakistan given conditions, but never reached performed like Marshall in those unfamiliar flat tracks. Being a lone wolf and the longevity makes up for much of it to me personally, but think that's why I have Marshall ahead, not because his record his stats are prettier across the board or anything.

I won't call Hadlee's first India tour good

13 wickets in 3 Tests against a very strong batting attack at their home in some conditions pretty dead to pace; and being the highest wicket taker for your team, it's definitely Good. Just because he averaged 33 doesn't makes it poor or mediocre in context imo, no more than averaging 14 on the next tour in some really spicy pitches against a very mid batting side in transition makes that ATG.

Not on longevity.
