Well Somerset have finally lost their first OD game of the season.

Batted first, made 7/333 with Beasley (106) leading the way. Pothas (68 from 32), Maqbool (42*) and YA Singh (41) also did well.

Unfortunately that was where the fun stopped. For Mumbai Tendulkar and Clarke both made tons as the Indian club won with 4 overs to spare...horrifyingly bad bowling effort:(

oh well

Disgraceful display by Worcester, all out for 77 against Free State. I don't know what's going on, my relatively strong OD batting has gone to pieces immediately after my weak 4D batting turned on a brilliant performance against NSW.

Chittagong were let down by their bowling again, a toothless display saw only Hasan emerge with any credit, as Northerns racked up 310 for just 2 wickets. A beautiful 144 from Orton at the heart of the innings.

Despite and nice opening partnership of 117, the run rate always looked too much, Indulkar, Winstanley, Fanning and Payne all contributed but ultimatelyChittagong fell 26 runs short

Mashonaland Record Upset Win

Mashonaland recorded their first win this season against an understrength Northern Districts side, and in the process shocked everyone, including their manager. Eager to prove themselves after narrowly escaping with a draw against Mashonaland in the four-day arena, ND made no hesitation in electing to bat on a pitch notorious for giving nothing to the bowlers.

The opening pair of Holland and Hussain successfully saw off the opening bowlers Ramanayake and Sami, but had no luck against first change spinner Saqlain Mushtaq. Mushtaq struck in his first over, having Hussain caught for four after misreading a well-flighted ball. ND captain Smith took a single off the next ball, before Mushtaq struck again, trapping ND batting star Holland in front for 16, leaving the score on 2/27. Smith (40 off 35) started his innings watchfully, but eventually opened up as partner Warner (11 off 35) had trouble forcing the pace. This proved to be Smith’s downfall, as he was caught on the boundary off all-rounded Burns. Ramanayake had Warner dismissed soon after, and ND were again in trouble on 4/88.Fortunately for the visitors, Gow (68) and Fleming (48) made a match of it, hitting an 87 run partnership. Fleming especially took a liking to Khan, his eight overs going for 50 runs before Fleming attempted one six too many and was well caught on the ropes. Ramanayake soon clean bowled Gow and it was all over for ND, their next four batsmen failing to trouble the bowlers very much. ND finished with an under-par score of 8/227 off their 50 overs and suddenly, Mashonaland had their sights on their first victory for the season.

Durrant and Eaton, the batting hero for Mashonaland in the CW Bar cup, opened the batting. S Khan had Eaton cunningly trapped in front off a slower ball after only two balls, with the score on zero. Quentin Carver soon joined Eaton back in the pavilion after being caught off Aldridge for 5. Mashonaland had been reduced to 2/31, and the home crowd feared another batting collapse. Thankfully for the crowd, the middle order came through for the Zimbabweans. Opener Durrant striked up a parternship with Ul-Haq before Durrant had his middle stump uprooted by a faster delivery from Hussain for 39. Ul-Haq eventually ran himself out just two runs short of a half century, meaning he has still yet to make one, despite making 49 in round two, and the run-out in this round has restarted rumours of a possible relation to Inzy. Keeper Petal (63* off 68) hung on and and joined with veteran Arnold (58* off 50), with both batsmen making a quickfire half-century in their 118 run partnership. The batsmen seemed to especially like S Khan’s bowling, his eight overs going for 61, while no ND bowler really fired. Eventually, Mashonaland eased to the total of 229 after forty overs, cementing a win of six wickets.

Mashonaland manager Andyc looked very elated and slightly tipsy in his post-match press conference, where he said, “I’m extremely proud of my boys. The middle order really came through today and showed what they were made of. Northern Districts were unlucky not to have Sangkarra this week, but they still put up a good fight. Hopefully this form will continue over to our four-day game, which is were we've appeared to be the most promising so far."

ND 8/227 after 50 overs
Gow 68, Fleming 46
Mushtaq 10/1/37/3, Ramanayake 9/2/31/2

Mashonaland 4/229 after 40 overs
Petal 63*, Arnold 58*
Aldridge 9/2/35/1

Hampshire pretty pleased with their win against Mumbai.. although it was a very tough match.. the bowlers bowled poorly, but fantastic batting from on form E Drake who had a 100 NO and a blitzin century from batsmen keeper T Thomas saw Hampshire through with another much needed win.! thats 2 wins in a row.. and the first in the OD competition that followed a good win against Mumbai in the 4D Competition last week.. lets just hope this kind of winning form carries on!

Beasley Brilliance saves Guyana

The match was being billed as the match of the round in division 5, as two of the most experienced managers in WCC went head to head with their respective sides. Guyana had made a much slower start to the OD competition than many had predicted and were out to overtake Province.

Schofield's gamble of opening the bowling with spinner Samaraweera once again paid dividends.Guyana looked intent to impose themselves early by taking to the bowling in a very aggressive fashion. Samaraweera however arrested the momentum back from the visitors as he got rid of DeVilliers then new found star Jenkins. When Francis followed moments later the feeling was that Guyana would crumble. At just under 5'4 Wayne Beasley hardly looks like an imposing batsman. The Province firepower in Khan and Kumble was thrown at him and the middle order early, in hope of inciting a collapse, however the "nugget" as he's known by in Guyana stood firm. Regular wickets however kept falling down the other end as Guyana tried to make a revival. Not known for hitting, Beasley attacked the best way he knows how, with his head. With some stunning shot making including 4 delicate glides off Schofield in a row down to the boundary the match started to turn again. Beasley raced to his 50 and then onto his hundred at a breakneck pace. His innings was exciting and full of class as. The Nugget confused and frustrated Province as it seemed that wherever there was a gap, Beasley came up with some kind of shot to find it. To Province's credit they were able to keep a steady flow of wickets down the other end and restrict the score to 267.

Under pressure all season the Province top order once again failed. Admittedly Llewellyn wasn't helped by a dubious decision by umpire Reifell but after that it was a dissapointing slide into defeat. Satti was the star with the ball as the tall West Indian extracted every bit of life out of the Newlands pitch. What was most impressive however was the fielding. Slats was heard saying after the match that "the fielding was the difference. We gave Beasley a couple of chances, but they held onto everything in the air and stopped everything on the ground". A lower order 50 from Shaw added a little respect to the score but Province were never really in the chase as wickets constantly fell. Eventually the innnings petered out to a close 19 runs short at 248.

A game that Guyana deserved to win. Sure it may look on the scorecard that it came from one man's brilliance however it was the little things that Guyana did right. The fielding, the pressure and the desire to win made them the best cricket team on the day, and now the favourites for the Div 5 OD title.

ND happy with performance

despite losing again Northern Distrcits manager Simon Fitzsimmons was reasonably happy with the teams performance in the match. While we set a low total, the batsman certainly showed more value for their wicket. We werent expected to win the match but we did put in a good showing. I dont xpect us to beat everyone, but it is good performances im looking for. The whole squad knows they are playing for season 6 now. Gow, Fleming, Smith and Aldridge all impressed at different stages. Holland batted well early on but was dismissed after getting a reasonable start. after scoring 8/227 we never had much of a chance. but the bowlers did do a good job however the fielding let us down.

theres no reason to be too downbeat and a win against the massively understrength Free State side this week is a real chance.

Tasmania's boosted their promotion hopes greatly with an upset win over Division 5 table-toppers Karachi. Goodwin won the toss and elected to field backing himself and the other batsmen to chase down the target.

Tasmania started well, with Banks holding on to Ghulam Ahmed's skyed hook off Canning's bouncer. But Karachi then started to take advantage of some wayward bowling from Pascoe, Charlton and Sammels. The run rate steadily increased and Karachi looked set for a big total. After Manhus departed for an elegant 72 off 77 deliveries they started to pull it back, Mike Rice's 10 overs, although wicketless, cost just 15 runs. The run rate dropped considerably, and Cooke and Sardesai fell trying to up the scoring rate. Khan, who finished unbeaten on 50, and Wessels managed to do it as best they could, bring Karachi up to a respectable 223-5.

Karachi's bowlers made it difficult for the opening pair of Rowell and Banks, particularly Rowell who was fortunate not to have been caught in the covers. Banks edged one behind with the score on 44, bringing Goodwin to the crease. Goodwin started to play fluently, but Rowell was still having problems, until he belted a ball from Silva out of the ground, and after that he never looked back. Both batsman gave the crowd plenty to cheer about as they smashed the ball to all parts of the ground. Goodwin was dismissed by Mishra right after bringing up his 50 leaving Tasmania with 69 to win. Rowell continued to wreak havoc, eventually bringing up his hundred at better than a run a ball. He eventually fell with 8 more required, which Rudolph easily got to secure victory for the Australian outfit.

Manager's comment: " It was a great team performance, with the batsmen finally showing the world what they can do. The bowlers may not have been spectacular but they kept it more than tight enough."

Karachi: 223-5, Manhus 72(77) Khan 50(74),Pascoe 2-59, Symonds 1-6.

Tasmania 227-3, Rowell 117(100) Goodwin 50(47), Louw 1-32 Silva 1-45.

Tasmania win by 7 wickets

Man of the Match: T Rowell.

Tamil Nadu were disappointed in being bundled out again. But at the end of the day Moss is a freak, so we can live that :D. Victoria's bowling line-up is one of the best in WCC, while my batting might be one of the best too, it simply wasn't good enough! Well done Stephen, well deserved victory!

'The Nugget' Inspires Guyana To Gutsy Win

Wally 'The Nugget' Beasley showed his class as he was able to hold together an otherwise disapointing batting effort by Guyana as the West Indian side kept their One Day title hopes alive. Batting first, Guyana were off to a flying start with Francis (35) and de Villiers (24) going at more than a run a ball before spinner Samaraweera broke their opening stand, and then inflicted more damage as he had Jenkins out first ball for a golden duck on his return from injury. However that laid the platform for an inspired innings, as he saw wickets crumble around him The Nugget took the game into his own hands with a display of class and maturity beyond the size and experience of the youngster. His 117 off 128 balls was not a chanceless one, however it was one of class all the same. Where the Western Province side were unable to take their opportunities Beasley capitilised. With the help of a late order revival Beasley guided Guyana to a defendable but not comfortable 8-267 off their 50 overs.

All of Western Proince's batsman made contributions, with every batsman, bar one, making double figures. But where Beasley stood tall for Guyana no Western Province batsman was able to take a hold of the innings with bowler G Shaw top scoring with 51. Western Province were eventually bowled out 19 runs short. Satti was the pick of the Guyana bowlers ending his 10 over spell with 4-43.

In a less positive note opening bowler Ramesh Perrera will be out of action for two weeks after he was found to have been involved in a nasty incidenct as the team celebrated their win at a Western Province bar.

Guyana manager Kyle Wright said that the win was the best he has seen under his leadership. "Today Guyana stood up and have sent notice to every team that you cannot take us lightly. Our star batsman Jenkins gets out first ball, and we still have a rookie score a century and do all that is needed for the side. We have wonderful depth in our side, and you cannot take any one player lightly. After a tough start to the season, we have got our plans back on track, and with other results going our way, we are now a realistic chance of gaining promotion in both forms of the game. However, we cannot rest on these performances we need to have consistency."
