Mashonaland Record Upset Win
Mashonaland recorded their first win this season against an understrength Northern Districts side, and in the process shocked everyone, including their manager. Eager to prove themselves after narrowly escaping with a draw against Mashonaland in the four-day arena, ND made no hesitation in electing to bat on a pitch notorious for giving nothing to the bowlers.
The opening pair of Holland and Hussain successfully saw off the opening bowlers Ramanayake and Sami, but had no luck against first change spinner Saqlain Mushtaq. Mushtaq struck in his first over, having Hussain caught for four after misreading a well-flighted ball. ND captain Smith took a single off the next ball, before Mushtaq struck again, trapping ND batting star Holland in front for 16, leaving the score on 2/27. Smith (40 off 35) started his innings watchfully, but eventually opened up as partner Warner (11 off 35) had trouble forcing the pace. This proved to be Smith’s downfall, as he was caught on the boundary off all-rounded Burns. Ramanayake had Warner dismissed soon after, and ND were again in trouble on 4/88.Fortunately for the visitors, Gow (68) and Fleming (48) made a match of it, hitting an 87 run partnership. Fleming especially took a liking to Khan, his eight overs going for 50 runs before Fleming attempted one six too many and was well caught on the ropes. Ramanayake soon clean bowled Gow and it was all over for ND, their next four batsmen failing to trouble the bowlers very much. ND finished with an under-par score of 8/227 off their 50 overs and suddenly, Mashonaland had their sights on their first victory for the season.
Durrant and Eaton, the batting hero for Mashonaland in the CW Bar cup, opened the batting. S Khan had Eaton cunningly trapped in front off a slower ball after only two balls, with the score on zero. Quentin Carver soon joined Eaton back in the pavilion after being caught off Aldridge for 5. Mashonaland had been reduced to 2/31, and the home crowd feared another batting collapse. Thankfully for the crowd, the middle order came through for the Zimbabweans. Opener Durrant striked up a parternship with Ul-Haq before Durrant had his middle stump uprooted by a faster delivery from Hussain for 39. Ul-Haq eventually ran himself out just two runs short of a half century, meaning he has still yet to make one, despite making 49 in round two, and the run-out in this round has restarted rumours of a possible relation to Inzy. Keeper Petal (63* off 68) hung on and and joined with veteran Arnold (58* off 50), with both batsmen making a quickfire half-century in their 118 run partnership. The batsmen seemed to especially like S Khan’s bowling, his eight overs going for 61, while no ND bowler really fired. Eventually, Mashonaland eased to the total of 229 after forty overs, cementing a win of six wickets.
Mashonaland manager Andyc looked very elated and slightly tipsy in his post-match press conference, where he said, “I’m extremely proud of my boys. The middle order really came through today and showed what they were made of. Northern Districts were unlucky not to have Sangkarra this week, but they still put up a good fight. Hopefully this form will continue over to our four-day game, which is were we've appeared to be the most promising so far."
