1 Down.... 1 to Go...
For Province it would be quite easy to get ahead of themeselves and start becoming complacent and claiming the division three title... However after comprehensively pounding Warwickshire, the South Africans aren't willing to celebrate just yet. The dressing shed was one of a professional atmosphere after the game, but beneath the surface of it all you could tell the players were bubbling.
After Warickshire won the toss on a good batting strip, their top order went about laying a good platform. Sriram and Wilmott were the most notable scorers with 61 and 50, and Warwickshire took the honours on a tense first couple of sessions at Newlands. However Usman Gul took the second new ball and bowled with vigour, and Warwickshire collapsed from 2-162 to be all out for 271.
Province then negotiated the Warwickshire attack comfortably till the close of play. Just as Province looked like getting on top Brendan Gregson pegged the South African's back and restored hope for Warwickshire 3-128... game on. However young talent Wessels then stood firm in the middle and gave the Province side the momentum they needed. The final session on day two and first session on the third day saw the South Africans take the game away from Warwickshire. Dicky Jacobs and Schoie did what Warwicks didn't do, they combined handsomely in the lower order for a 113 run partnership and it didn't end there as Harkness joined Jacobs for more runs. The end of the inning saw Jacobs just 5 short of his maiden first class century however Province were way out ahead with 448.
Warwickshire began poorly after tumbling to 3-67 however Wilmott was keen to give the side some final hope to get on top. Compiling a masterful century in what appeared like a losing cause Wilmott carted the Province bowling to all ends of the park. However it was the magic of wily spinner Thilan Samaraweera at the other end that kept Province in the lead comfortably.
Province were set just 173 on the final day for the win, and Slats was keen to enforce to the guys over night that today could change the shape of the club.. Llewellyn and Darden were keen to impress in their last game on home soil and a fabulous 149 run opening stand with Llewellyn reaching 82 gave Province perhaps their most memorable win ever..
Slats4ever had this to say... "We've had results go against us in the past in unfortunate circumstances, but we got our own back today in a big way.. the guys knew how important this one was for us. Everyone contributed which was great, and shows how much these guys care about the cause of the team. My heart goes out to Nibbs and his team, I do understand how you feel at this time, but we promise we will do our best ot knock Canterbury off so that you will get to division 2 where you belong"
