Marlon Samuels's century

Ain't it Amazing.... the first century by a West Indian Right Handed Middle order batsman other than Hooper for 8 or 9 years !!!!

Can anyone confirm this coz I'm not sure and I based this purely on me not managing to remember a successful R/H middle order batsman other than Carl Hooper !!!!

If this is true then it just shows yet again the magnitude WI have dropped down ....:(:O

I like the way he plays a lot, a few yrs back in Aus, he did not do much, but to me he still showed a lot of promise. Hopefully he will build on this.

This guy was one of my fav players a couple of years back.. then I heard nothing of him for ages. Good on him

That was Samuels' first career first-class hundred. I thought he would have had more.

Overall Samuels doesn't have a very good record...but he sure is getting better, what I like most about him is his cool head and he doesn't get rattled up very easily by fast bowlers.
I still rate Ricardo Powell higher though...defiantly ;)

Why would you rate Ricardo Powell higher than Marlon Samuels? You said yourself that you like Samuels' cool head but Powell is the opposite. he can't help but get himself out. Don't get me wrong, he has talent. Alot. However, he just seems able to get a run-a-ball 20 to 30 runs then get out. You can't succeed in cricket without the big innings.

Ocassionally he does get a fantastic 50 or so but not at all consistently. I hope I am proven wrong in the upcoming ODI series however because WI really need him to be good.

Errrm...look at the guy's user name...if that doesn't tell you why he rates him so much...then something is very wrong!

Powell is over-rated, every great batsman has the ability to defend well, and Powell doesnt. If you dont have that ability, you cannot be a great batsman.

I disagree...Powell has shown that he can stay at the crease, but the problem is that more often than not he comes in with under 10 overs to go and is required to hit out at the bowling...he isn't a pinch hitter, thats why his average is quite low. You can see the talent he possesses by just looking at his innings, 124 against India, 83* against ZIM, 74 against NZL were all played in tight situations and he had to play with the tailenders to win the match...(his 74 gave the WI a respectable total towards the end). Not only that, in his last Busta Cup preformance he hit about 5 scores over 70 but still didn't get recalled, still guys like Samuels who preformed poorly get called up over him, and he is more experienced and is a better bowler than Samuels is.

He may come in during happy hour alot but look at his domestic scores in four day games. He hasn't done much to speak of.
You might say that FC records are nothing to judge by but with the standard of bowling in WI regional cricket right now and the slow pitches, he should be doing better.

Admittidly though, he played a decent Busta Cup this year. Hopefully he has turned the corner. He is also a decent bowler.

Better bowler than Samuels? Samuels has 25 wickets at 30 in 30 ODIs...The only delivery I have seen bowled by Powell was smashed for a huge six by a then unknown Marcus Trescothick to seal a 10 wicket win...England's 1st 10 wicket win in ODIs :D

The point is there arew two undeniable facts:
1-Powell's done much better in the domestic 4-day version of the game (Busta Cup) than he did in the domestic 1-day tournament(Red Stripe Bowl), amazingly he is still concidered as a ODI specialist by the selectors...

2-In the recent Red Stripe Bowl, when he got a chance to bat it was just for the last 2 or 3 overs which are when he was required to smash the ball around by the Jamaican captain whithout settling in...thus the low average, I think the most he stayed in the crease was 15 min. to score an unbeaten 24 off 18 balls...Batsmen like Robert Samuels, Marlon Samuels, Leon Garrick took their time while scoring at a strike rate of well under 66% at the very best on then pitches of Trinidad, Antigua and Jamaica which are considered a batsman's (not paradise) but at least a dwelling :D.

The reason why I say he is a better bowler than Samuels(by the way I have nothing against him) is because he has better control, and he is a much more attacking bowler who gives the ball some flight and turns it a lot more...Samuels has had some problem of bowling lots of long hops and overusing an easily detected faster ball...(easily smashed by the Aussies as well....)

I do agree that Powell is a better bowler. I saw him bowl in the Busta Cup this year and he turned the ball a good bit. He certainly is attacking and fairly economical. You can't compare the international bowling stats of Powell and Samuels because neither have really bowled much at that level. Powell has bowled less than Samuels as well.

However, I still maintain that Samuels is a better batsmen.

PS- How many balls are smashed easily by the Aussies anyway?? It doesn't even have to be along hop
