L. Balaji

Lakshmipathy Balaji has really impressed me in this series as I am sure a lot of you guys are too. And its not just the control he has in his bowling but his batting too. If a guy can hit shoaib and sami for sixes and fours consistently, he can't be just another tailender. I think India should move him up the order and realise his full potential. Even today, I thought instead of Kaif, he should have come in. Kaif's game is about accumulating runs and running quickly between the wickets. This is not suited in the final overs. Balaji can develop into the Indian version of Abdul Razzaq.

This guys got class...I can see him coming into a lot of matches for India in the future

Man, your signature is huge!

Could you change it a bit man! I mean it stretches the page!

Balaji won't be a Razzag, he will have to work on his batting alot.

I mean to say someone who has a FC HS of 37 and a OD HS of 21 shouldnt' even be considered near Razzag.

Balaji's batting has been a revelation.
John Wright will certainly be pleased that in Irfan and Balaji, India have two tailenders who can contribute some useful runs.

As for his bowling, he has talent but needs to work on consistency.
If he can develop more consistency, he may even have a future test level, not as a genuine strike new ball bowler but as a third seamer who can bowl tightly and build up pressure on the batsmen.

For once someone else (instead of myself) came up with a thread on Balaji:O

So people are finally noticing LB, i have always maintained that this guy is all class.

Balaji has to work on his batting, right now he's just handy with the bat.

At this stage I would bat Irfan Pathan at 8, AA at 9, Kumble at 10 and Zaheer at 11.

The great thing about Balaji is that he is one of the most hardworking and commited guys in world cricket today.

The amount of heart, soul and work he puts into both batting and bowling is amazing. As well, he is an ever improving cricketer.

Expect his FC batting and ODI batting stats to improve all the time, as his bowling is as well. He has been Tamil Nadu's kingpin pace bowler for a couple of seasons now, and he is starting to become an asset for India as well.

Also, what a find Irfan Pathan has turned out to be for India.
A lot of people have been unfairly criticising Irfan Pathan for being expensive or whatever.

This guy has OFFICIALLY won me over as a fan. I can safely say now that Im a huge Irfan Pathan supporter and want nothing but success for him.

Not only has he been very economical this series, he has been picking wickets and most of all SWINGING the ball to good effect, which is now such a rarity in International Cricket.

Pathan has the potential to go all the way to the top of International Cricket, and well then,

Who knows...........

And he can bat.

He looks to me an ideal number 8. AA should bat at 9 IMO. If anything Ganguly should tell A just to slog, that is what he is good at.

Infact this bloke is becomming a big threat to Z khan. When Nehra is going to return, i would expect India to go with Nehra,Irfan,Ajit and Kumble. ZK will have to sit out.

Why does Nehra get prefrence over Zaheer and Balaji when Nehra's career record is a pile of absolute crap.

Both Balaji and Pathan have been great pick ups. They matured on the Australian tour and that has shown during this Pakistan ODI series. Bright futures for the both of them :D

When Agarkar returns I'd have Pathan, Agarkar, Balaji and Kumble for the test team. If Nehra can get himself in the form he was starting to show in the first 2 ODIs, and if Zaheer can get 100% fit they'd have a claim for the side but right now Pathan and Balaji are the premier pace bowlers with Agarkar IMO.

Come off it - Kaif is a specialist batsman - Balaji a tailender at best.

Balaji's batting has really imressed me in this series. He looks comfortable against the pace of Sami and Shoiab :O . He reminds me so much of Srinath. He already has the one which seams away. But i have hardly seen him reverse swing in Intl cricket which he does in domestic cricket. With Pathan and Balaji , India has two good bowlers with potential with both bat and ball.

while i rate pathan, Balaji didn't do that much while he was out here, he bowled well in a couple of games sure, but outside that did nothing at all...

Exactly. That four-ball an over or six-ball an over can go. He bowled quite well in Australia, except in a few matches. He may go for a lot of runs, but that's what happens if he bowls at an easy pace. He just needs to vary his pace a little. Good final overs bowler, but still, too many runs.

He can also do a good job as a strike bowler in emergency/least risk conditions, but not regularly. He just has to keep to a good line and length, while Zaheer and Pathan try to run through the opposition batting.

Come off it - Kaif is a specialist batsman - Balaji a tailender at best.
This was about the final overs. Kaif is not a good hitter, though he's a good runner. Balaji can hit the ball cleanly and a long way.

If there's a problem I find in this Indian team, the players end up being very one-skilled. That other skill should be allowed to develop. That can be said of Pathan's batting, Balaji's batting, Sehwag's bowling and both of Powar's skills, but not Dravid's keeping!

I mean to say someone who has a FC HS of 37 and a OD HS of 21 shouldnt' even be considered near Razzag.
Razzaq is a top-6 batsman, though Balaji's FAR better than the average Indian tailender, who, according to Boycott and Sidhu, can't bat at all.

Infact this bloke is becomming a big threat to Z khan. When Nehra is going to return, i would expect India to go with Nehra,Irfan,Ajit and Kumble. ZK will have to sit out.
Agarkar should only play in ODI's, like Ian Harvey. Nehra should improve his batting and fielding and the same can be said of Zaheer. My picks are any 4 out of Bhandari, Pathan, Powar, Kumble and Balaji, and even Karthik. Agarkar should play as the fifth bowler. Zaheer is the only Indian bowler other than Kumble in this current lineup with more than 1 5-wicket haul. Agarkar got his after 4 years, Zaheer, after 2. He has 3 in all.

Why does Nehra get prefrence over Zaheer and Balaji when Nehra's career record is a pile of absolute crap.
He's potentially more effective than Balaji and he can bowl faster and move the ball a lot more. It's his inconsistency and his lack of batting and fielding that are a problem, which make Agarkar, Balaji and even Yohannan better choices.

I think this is beginning to change in the 1 day team and that's partly what's given them an edge over Pakistan. Pathan and Balaji, who both appear to be excellent fielders and useful batsmen, epitomise this.

The Indian team positively brims over with enthusiasm and vibrancy and there is clearly a fantastic team spirit. They're a joy to watch at the moment.

What's happened to Salvi? I haven't seen him play, but isn't he a highly rated young bowler?
He has been injured for a while now. He returned in the Ranji Semis but only picked up one wicket and now he is going to play in the final tomorrow.
