Kyle Verreynne : The crisis keeper batsman of South Africa

Silver Silva

International Regular
Sometimes career batting averages don't tell the whole story , few batters have been exposed to a crisis like Kyle Verreynne in their short career.

Kyle Verreynne has batted at No.5 , No.6 and No.7 in test cricket. Let's say we take 40 runs per dismissal on average as a sign of an okay platform for a middle to lower batsmen.

So :
A.120/3 would be okay for a No.5
B.160/4 would be okay for a No.6
C. 200/5 would be okay for a No.7

A.On no occasion out of 3 innings has Verreynne walked into bat at No.5 with SA better than 120/3

B. 4 out of 20 innings has Verreynne walked into bat at No.6 with SA in a better position than 160/4

C. 1 out of 7 innings has Verreynne walked into bat at No.7 with SA in a better position than 200/5

His averages so far suggest he's not really thrived in a crisis but still early on his career.

Must say I am glad to see Verreynne going well, definitely rate him

That time he got dropped after being one of the very few players to actually do a good job on that otherwise kinda shambolic Australia tour was absolutely stupid, genuinely terrible bit of selection that

Not kidding when I say he looked South Africa's most competent batsman in a test series in NZ about 3 years ago.
Surprised his stats are as mediocre as they are but that may well change.

The sad thing is even averaging ~30 since his career starts puts him in competition for SA’s 3rd best bat in that time.

Very sad stat: since de Kock’s retirement SA averages 23.60 with only 8 tons (3 year period) Windies are comparable with 23.80 and 9 tons.

They’re behind Ireland on average and ahead of Afghanistan and Zimbabwe. The only other team with a similar average is Bangladesh, and their players have scored 15 tons in the same number of matches.
