Kapil Dev is so great that the legendary Sunil Gavaskar , a huge fan of his , wrote a Chapter named "Kapil Dev "in a class 10th english Book

This is where the stats nerds of this forum depart from cricketing reality

not a single person who followed Indian cricket during that time would consider Gavaskar more valuable. Kapil was and still may be the most imoortant player ever in Indian cricket. Gavaskar - who actually remembers the loser other than his stats
Has nothing to do with being a stat nerd.

And while all of that may be true, having greater value to Indian cricket doesn't in any way correlate to being a better cricketer.

Not a fan of Sunny, but he's in my mind a top 4 test opener of all time and walks into every test team in history. There's many where Kapil doesn't get even the sniff of the new ball and some he doesn't even make.

So value is relative, and India not having great fast bowlers up to that point, doesn't make Kapil a better cricketer. He wasn't a great bowler, how that that out scale one of the greatest openers of all time and a top 10 bat in history?
