Len gets the knod

Former England captain Sir Leonard Hutton has been selected as club captain for Jaffna Jets. Hutton captained England in 23 Tests between 1952 and 1955, in which he won 11 Tests, drew 8 and lost 4. The club fells that Len is the right person to lead the club both on and off the field this season. Jaffna Jets manager had this to say about Hutton during the press conference, " Hutton through his captaincy, an abilty to get the most of out his players. His abilty to get the most out of players like Tyson, Trueman, May and Cowdrey, was the deciding factor for him getting the captaincy over other players. We are hopefully at the Jets that he can also produce similar results for the players he will be captaining this season."

In a surprise move Sri Lankan great Muttiah Muralithran has piped four other former Test captain to be named vice captain for the club this season. Many expected that either Bob Willis, Hanif Mohammad, Hugh Trumble or Tender Taibu to be given the vice captaincy role for the club, on the back of their experience as Test Captains throughout their career. But with the manager Tharmi Loganathan having high praise for the leadership skills that Murali has displayed throughout the pre season and during his career he gave him the role. He had this to say in the press conference, "We believe that Murali would have made a great captain if he had been given the oppurtunity throughout his career. The other contenders had many merits for been given the job, but we felt Murali was the best option to work with Hutton throughout the season."

Trueman to lead Jets pace attack

Jaffna Jets would like to welcome Fred Trueman, Pervez Sajjad and Nathan Astle to the club. After some long transfers talks between the Jets and NZ Blazers, the Jets finally got their man in Fred Trueman. The club is hopefully that Trueman and Holding can provide the solid new ball conbination required away from home, that trouble the great batting line ups the club will face throughout this season. The club is also pleased with getting Pervez Sajjad, who was the club's No1 Pakistan option during the later stages of the draft. Sajjad is likely to fill the 3rd spinner option vacanted by Bill O'Reilly at home. The club would also like to wish Bruce Taylor, Bill O'Reilly and CF Walters, the best of luck at their new clubs.

Hobbs to open up for the Jets

Jaffna Jets have completed their second transfer of the season with the purchase of former England opener Jack Hobbs. Hobbs was brought to the club to open the batting with Club Captain and fellow Englishman Len Hutton. These two batsmen are both rated as two of the greatest openers of all time and Jets are confident they can combine to produce one of the best opening batting partnerships in ALFTAs. The Jets are sad to see their number one middle order batsmen in Eddie Paynter leave to Greater Northern CC, as the club had great hopes of him. We wish him all the best at his new clubs and hope he has a lot success, expect against us.

When ask whether this might be the end of trading for Jets or just the start, Jets manager Tharmi Loganathan replied “We are quite happy with the 16 players we have now. I would prefer a better reserve bat then Nathan Astle, but he might play a part on the pitches that don't offer any assistance to my spinners, with his medos. If anyone is likely to go its probably Willis or Sajjad. I’m not a big fan of tailenders who don't have a swing. If they don't start looking to play more shots, they are not going to get too many Baggy Purples."

Player Interview 1

Gotha Runs: Welcome all to the first player interview of this season. Joining us today is Jets’ Australian all rounder Alan Fairfax. So Alan how do you feel you have settled into life in Northern Sri Lanka.

AF: Hey mate, I’m really enjoying life in Jaffna, the beaches are nice, the people are friendly and it’s very laid back. If the surf was a bit better I would be cloud nine.

GR: That’s nice to here, so what role do you think you will play for the Jets this season?

AF: I’ve been told by the coach that I will play as a Batting All Rounder. Personally I see myself as a genuine all rounder, who can make a side with the bat or ball. But I guess with the bowling attack we have, it will be hard to get the ball off some guys. I’m just looking forward to contributing to the team where I can.

GR: With so many great all rounders in the competition, do you feel you have some extra pressure on you.

AF: Its one of those funny things in life, when Keith Miller started his Test Career some people rated his performances compared to mine. Now people are going to rate my performances compared to Miller. But to answer the question I got my own role for the Jets and that will differ to Miller, Imran Khan, Botham and others. As long as I perform my role in the team, I’m confident the management team will be happy regardless of other all rounders performances.

GR: Back when you played for Australia you had Grimmett and Ironmonger in the side. Where do the Jets spinners rate compared to those two.

AF: You guys love your spinners here in Jaffna don’t you! Well Grimmett and Ironmonger were both great spinners but I think Murali in a class of his own. His probably the best bowlers I’ve very played with, but Trueman not far behind. Trumble finished his career before I was born, but from what I’ve seen his all class. It’s a tough call to say if his better then Grimmett or Ironmonger, because their all quality.

GR: Well you played a lot of your 10 Tests, with Don Bradman, do you fell that will give you an advantage when bowl you to him.

AF: Not really his a great batsmen and he has no weakness, when you bowl to him you just hope for the best. Bowl your line and lengths and hope he makes a mistake. But in saying that it should be interesting to see how Murali goes against him, he got him out in the trial game and if anyone will cause him some trouble it might be him.

GR: With so many players in the competition with vast Test experience, do you feel your limited Test experience will count against you.

AF: It does help having a bit more Test experience when you get in tight situation in the games. But with some experienced players around us inexperienced guys we should be fine. The signing of Hobbs and Trueman were pretty big signings in this area.

GR: Finally how do you feel the club will go this, what are your expectations?

AF: It is a bit early to make predictions, but we are quietly confident that we will be right up there. Most of the sides are very strong, so it’s not going to be easy at all. Every match is going to be tough and there aren’t going to be any easy beats. It going to be a long hard season, but I think we have the side to come out on top, if we do the little things right.

GR: Thanks for giving up some of your time Alan and hope you and the Jets have a great.

AG: Any time mate and thanks for having me.

IMO, it's a batsman short if anything!
Yeah we had a extra 50 batsmen in Walters but i sold him for Trueman cus i felt we were weak in fast bowling away from home. Also i think the side that is going to win this the one with the best bowling attack, looking at the pitches we are going to play on.
