some of the greatest serieses Cricketers ever had, not just about the aggregates but also the way the aggregates were achieved.

Ian Botham 1981 Ashes

Batting:
399 @ 36.27, 93 Strike Rate, 2 hundreds in 12 innings.
Bowling: 34 @ 20.59, 48 strike rate, 3 fifers and 1 tenfer.

Brian Lara 1999 Sir Frank Worrell trophy

Batting:
546 @ 91, 65 strike rate, 3 hundreds in 7 innings

greater series?

Botham's Ashes. It was the greatest cricket series I'd seen at the time and still lives long in the memory all those years later.

A better comparison for Botham is the Sobers series where he scored 700 runs and took 20 wkts. Regarding the above probably Botham since his runs and wkts together had more impact on the series. Lara did face a much better team though.

I mean, Botham obv because allround stats plus his personal standing at the time and profile in the English press. I stayed up through the night for the '99 series though and I can tell you Lara's batting got as close to magical as imaginable. Impossible to choose, so I respectfully abstain.

Yes but Botham himself has a top 10 ever knock in his Ashes.

Lara was more consistent throughout
Sure but Botham had more concentrated greatness.

Flopped the first two tests.

Then an ATG ton, fifty and 6fer in the third.
Clutch fifer in the 4th to win the game.
Worldclass ton in the fifth on bowling wicket and five wickets.
Tenfer in the last drawn game.

Agreed. But Lara's top 5 knock was better (arguably the best ever) and his double ton is easily in the top 40 territory as well. Scored a ton and 70 odd in the 2 defeats as well.
