Korea DPR? Côte d'Ivoire?

North Korea. Ivory Coast. What the hell is this all about? How many other countries to we refer to in French? Do we say "République centrafricaine"? No - because that would be bloody stupid. Nor do we try to pronounce "Bosnia and Herzegovina" in Serb or Croat, because that would also be moronic. So why do we arse around with Côte d'Ivoire? Whose idea was it in the first place? It's not funny, it's not clever, it's not sophisticated. It's just bloody stupid.

Also, using the word "Democratic" to refer to Kim Jong-Il's personal fiefdom is even more sycophantic than referring to that nutjob who thinks he's in charge of Sealand as "HRH". If a country is so insecure that it wants everyone to call it "Democratic" - whilst banning its citizens from reading any dispute to it, of course - then it can go and salute itself. It began as North Korea, and it can stay that way.

Neil raises a good point about The Ivory Coast tho; why do we pander to them? Is it just because we use the Latin alphabet too? Willing to bet Japan or Russia don't write the country as Côte d'Ivoire when referring to it.
