I think Amla is a great choice. This is true.
It might be an extra reason for picking Lara ahead of Anwar.
Alternatively, Hashim Amla could get in there opening with Tendulkar.

I do not think I said anything about who between Dhoni or Gilchrist is the better batsman although I do have an opinion on that :-))A tad harsh IMO
I really don't rate Dhoni as a test player because I don't think he would last too long but in the LO format. He is arguably the finest ever finisher (FTR he is just behind Bevan for mine).
Just because Gilchrist was more versatile doesn't mean that he is a better batsman than Dhoni. In LO format Dhoni performs pretty much every time and of course he plays to his strengths for which he should be given credit for (not take it away).
Lightning quick Murali? I don't think so Smali.Murali was actually a pretty good fielder (before he had a shoulder injury). He was lightning quick in ground fielding
Strange i clearly remember the young Murali being an absolutely gun ground fielder, quick across the turf with a safe pair of hands and an accurate throwing arm. He was one of the best fielders in the SL team along with Mahanama, Chandana etcLightning quick Murali? I don't think so Smali.
Also, pretty good fielder is such a wide varying description of someone/something. My sushi for lunch today was pretty good, but nothing to write home about. If I had to give Murali a rating as a fielder he would be slightly below average, which isn't great in an all time XI. I don't want to harp on just Murali though, the team selected isn't a good fielding unit overall.
NUFAN I think you are seriously under rating Murali's fielding.Oh well lets rate his fielding highly because he was a good fielder for about 10% of his matches. OVERALL he isn't gun.
Since you followed most of it, please provide me with some instances where he produced terrific ground fielding. There is no way he was up there with Roshan Mahna Mahnam.NUFAN I think you are seriously under rating Murali's fielding.
I am not sure how much of his career you followed but I followed most of it and agree with satyanash that he was up there with Chandana and Mahanama as a ground fielder (not as good a catcher) and had a very good and accurate throw. And it wasn't in only 10% of his matches. more like half his career at least.
you don't need very different fielding skills for ODIs
Of course you do, but you wouldn't have noticed that much supporting a country known for sloppy fielding.you don't need very different fielding skills for ODIs
when did I say he was SL's best fieldsman?Of course you do, but you wouldn't have noticed that much supporting a country known for sloppy fielding.
Even in that clip Murali is fielding at mid on/mid off you don't put your best fieldsman there. Like I said, I didn't want it to be only about Murali, I looked at the XI and after watching Cricket believe that the fielding unit is no where near world class. Murali = average at best.
1. When did I say that you said that he was SL's best fieldsman? You said he was up there with Chandana and Mahanama who were terrific, especially Roshan - I completely disagree that 'he's up there'.when did I say he was SL's best fieldsman?
And just because I support Pakistan doesn't mean I can't judge a fielder on merit.
Thirdly, Murali was the main SL bowler, why the hell would they field him at short leg or slips?
Yep, as a mod I'd like to give everyone one last warning about this - no more Warne-v-Murali stuff in here; we've got another thread for that.Nah deadset **** off. This is a thread about best ODI batsman ever, Warne and Murali do not belong here. Get this **** to the Warne vs. Murali or ODI All-Time XI threads.
Of course its different. Different colour ball, often at night, more skied opportunities, catches in different positions. Not to mention the ground fielding and the sharpness needed for run outs.lol @ wrong format for fielding
As if catching the ball is different for ODIs and Tests
