Friendlies - are they of any value?

Are the performances of players in friendlies run by GB worth taking note of or are they meaningless? I suspect that as they're separate from the league files that they probably count for nothing. It would be good to get a definitive answer on this one.

Surely they dont count in the avges at the end of the season. Its just like an unofficial ODI or Test whose records are not entered in the record books. Here its just to see how the new players are going.

Im pretty sure that they dont change as the friendlies for the new teams last season didnt effect the player stats. Just to be sure better wait til GB or Rich says something.

They don't count in the end of season averages, but the point I'm trying to make is this - if you run a league under VCM4, you can't run friendlies within that league file. You can run friendlies outside by loading up the stats and creating another file, but the players perform differently. I know - I played Lancashire off against every other team in the league 10 times each and the averages I ended up with differed greatly to those achieved in the actual WCC for all teams. Within each file, players perform and develop differently. Taking this into account, I question whether the pre-season friendlies are of any value.

My star player, T Petal has taken 17 Wickets at 6.82 and scored 50 runs at 50 in 2 4D friendlies, and taken 3 Wickets at 18.33 and scored 92 runs at 92 in 2 OD friendlies...now these are impressive...but what's he gonna do in the league? I don't know! We just played friendlies against the old teams before transfers which really isn't of any use. I've learnt more by running VC4 with my new players and seeing where the best positions are for each player. So I suppose friendlies do not mean anything. But if we actually made them mean something...I mean I just won my 2 4D friendlies and lost my 2 OD friendlies...I could have told you I would have done that anyway, my OD team is seriously weak! But just because ACT drew their game against Karachi doesn't mean I'm the better team!

graham your argument is fair, but i put this to you, would you say the entire competition has changed since we started simming matches on rich's computer rather than on blewy's?

I see the point you are making and i guess the problem is with VC4 and consistency with results. Although you cant expect the stats to be the same due to factors such as form, they should be similar. In real life pre-season friendlies should be of value, but if VC4 is not consistent then there is little value in frienlies. Anyway u cant expect to base your whole team strategy on friendlies. The only real value i see in friendlies is to try new strategy and search for potential in you reserve players.

A sperate file is used so that we don't ruin the leauge stats

However I would say the friendlies are true reflections of players, as it doesn't matter how you play it the good players will always stand out.

As for you running your own set of 10 matches, can I ask if you actually selected everyones squads or just computer generated the teams, as I know GB never set the First X1's up as no point... If you select Kent only about 4-5 players actually play in my squad, so your always going to get a different result.

For the same as the above but with ground conditions for every team.

Also I do agree that VC4 has it's faults some which stand out more than others... As a result GB/Myself have spoken about if we should change the programme we use, when I know for sure what's happing I'll let you all know.

If I have missed anything out just ask....

I thought the new program was really really predictible though, VC4 keeps a random element. Oh for a fusion of the 2!

Oh no Rik not that programe (I think we are talking about the same one)

After Bangladesh had bowled Australia out for 147 in a Test match and scored 157 themselves...

I decided it's probably not the best programe in the world ;) :D

However we have something else planned (alot better) but like I said I haven't heard much about it in a while now so not sure what's going on.

Yeah I'm sure we were talking about the same program...the predictible one...well if the new one still can produce surprise results (I mean with ACT's batting lineup how would I win against them? But I have before...) then I'm for it, of course I wouldn't mind trying it out when details are available ;)

Four things:

1/ When I simmed my multitude of games, I selected what I felt were the best sides for both teams.

2/ As far as I'm aware Rich has GB's original league file, so why should there be any concern about consistency of results (in answer to Broncoman's question)

3/ Each manager should be asked who they want their first XI players to be (if denoting them as first XI players in the VCM4 team files makes a difference as to how they and the team perform)

4/ although VCM4 has it's faults, I have no problem with it continuing to be used. In fact I'd probably prefer it.

No the First X1 makes no difference to how a team performces, it's just a ablity for you to select the same X1 every time.. (when you create a file you would normally put it as your best X1 players) but because none of the teams are ever the same each week there is little point.

How do you set it to do that though? It would be a lot easier than having to select each player in my version as the 1st XI is nothing like the team I play!
