Bowling vs Batting, only primary skills.

One can't perform in away Ashes and averages 27.5 in Australia, one can't perform in home Ashes and averages 37 in the Ashes up top.

Hammond for me. Arguably the best Ever to tour Australia. Infact he averaged more than Don himself in Ashes in Australia pre War.
This is it and one of the major reasons England won 10 Ashes tests pre war, against Australia's 5. (From the time of Bradman's debut). Hammond was also at his best as a bowler in Australia and contributed his share of wickets at a 33 average. Then there was his slip fielding.

One of the good things I've noticed about cricket's history is the affection (if that's not too cloying a word) I have for the game's "old testament" players. By that I mean players I did not see actively play. So for example I quite like Jardine but find it hard to warm to Gavaskar. Then again the game's historical charm even performs a make over on him. I like Gavaskar much more now than when he was playing. I'm not sure what it is though I'm sure time forgives and you're better able to admire players for their skill rather then dread how they will go against your team.

Hammond is a favourite.

why so? Feel like Hammond's home Ashes record should be treated worse than Trueman's away Ashes record
That is fair, considering his away record in Australia was played on the flattest of conditions humanly possible.

And added to his away record in the Caribbean is somewhat dire as well.
