Equation Simple for Province

After comfortably disposing of Tasmania, Province now have a simple equation for the last 2 rounds. Facing the other two standout teams of the division Canterbury and Warwickshire if Province win both, they will get auto promotion... If they win one they will get a play off... If they lose both... diddely squat.

The game against Tasmania was one that Province expected to win. Darden won the toss on an overcast day and had no problems with sending the Tasmanians in. Matthie begun destroying and dismantling the Tassy's from the word go. By the end of his first spell he'd taken 6-30 and Tassy were reeling at 6-73. Friend quickly cleaned the tail up and Tassy were gone for a poultry 124.

Things began well for the Province boys with the bat with Darden (51) and Funston (83) continuing their fine form and laying a good foundation. Province had wiped out the deficit for the loss of just 2 wickets, however to the Tassy's credit they fought back and Province lead by just 120.

At 2-4 in reply it looked all over for Tasmania however the middle order rallied behind Goodwin (84) as he lead his side to a respectable lead. Once again it was Matthie who lead the charge taking his 10th wicket for the match with figures of 4-52.

Set just 129 Province's top order gave the side a comfortable win with Darden getting another 50 and Funston making a good 30 not.

It's all set for an exciting finish with next round certainly one of the highlights of the WCC calender. Warwickshire and Province are both equal top, and both sides look very evenly matched. It sure will be a memorable encounter.

ACT shoot to the top of Division 4...

After fighting back from a sluggish start against Colts today, ACT now stand alone at the top of Division 4 after Somerset were unable to finish off Victoria...

With 2 games to go now a win against Somerset in the next four day round could secure ACT a title..

Warwickshire won another four day match, scoring their sixth four day win in a row over Glamorgan. Glamorgan somehow rolled Warwickshire for only 128 in their first inning. Hasnain the former Warwickshire bowler took 6 wickets. More shocks came as Glamorgan made 262, taking a 124 run first innings lead.
In reply however Warwickshire made 452. S Fernando scored a century with good back up from Howarth and Sriram. Glamorgan had given up and were rolled 124, Warwickshire taking 12 points from this game

Clearly you didn't if you only took 8 wickets in the second innings. ;)

A tale of two bowlers

With Karnataka's batsmen finally firing - Maxwell scoring a century in each innings and getting moderate support from the openers, especially Howarth who played his first fine knock. Having lost the one-day match and the trophy, the Indians wanted revenge and a slight chance of play-off. And the match at Bangalore were dominated by two men. Lancashire's W Pointer and Karnataka's Tareq Durani.

Durani wasn't stellar in the first innings, but then again, most others weren't either. Lancashire, and in particular Hashim Amla, were allowed to run away to 412, and manager Mørk was seen cursing as all his other bowlers were hit around the park. Only Durani performed respectably, bowling 36 overs of spin and grabbing 6 wickets for 109 in the process.

Then came a batting miracle from Abhijit Kale and Sean Maxwell. Pairing up for the second wicket after Howarth got out for 2 as usual, they put on 192 to bemuse Lancashire's bowlers. Eventually, Kale went lbw for a classy 84, but by then Karnataka were right back into the match, effectively 132 for 2 on a wicket that kept getting worse. And with Rangnekar, Keegan, Jones and Borde all hanging around to support Maxwell, Karnataka declared with one wicket left to set a daunting 293 for Lancashire, despite Pointer taking 5 for 87 and taking his total for the match to 10 for 192.

Then came Durani. After the usual tripe was served up by Jones and Sigera in the opening overs, Ali and Durani took over the bowling - and in what style. Durani finally proved his class, bowling a perfect line and a somewhat erratic length that had the batsmen stumped (in Amla's case, literally) on a number of occasions. With Khalid Ali firing in yorkers from the other end, Lancashire succumbed, and but for Amla and Fernando putting on 82 for the sixth wicket, there might not have been a chase at all - they were 170 short with 5 wickets in hand at one point. But when Borde had Amla stumped for a cautious 48, that ended the resistance. Durani had some help from Ali who came back with a lethal second spell, taking 3 for 46, while Durani got to bowl 29 overs on the turner and ended up with a total of 6 for 106 in the innings - similar to his first effort, ending with 12 for 213 and rightly getting man of the match honours.

Tables (unofficial):

SA 98
Surrey 83
Lancs 76
Kent 73
Yorks 59
Karnataka 34

Given that Karnataka need about 30 points from two games, their manager does realise that the relegation ghost is not only staring them in the face, but dragging them well down into Division 2. It's been an almost-season.

Can't believe the boys lost to Jamaica. :( Ah well, just shows there's still work to be done.

An easy win for Qld over WA with Jimmy Maher scoring a great 207. Salvi took some wickets to help in the bowling department.

The win will cement at least a promotional playoff with the 5th side from division 1. I can't see Hampshire overtaking us. Only 12 points behind Tamil Nadu which we play this weekend - obviously an important clash. The winner will most probably be the automatic side to be promoted.

In the one dayers it looks like we will play off for relegation to division 3. A bad season on that front. WA won't catch us and I can't see that we'll overtake 4th, no matter what happens.
