A tale of two bowlers
With Karnataka's batsmen finally firing - Maxwell scoring a century in each innings and getting moderate support from the openers, especially Howarth who played his first fine knock. Having lost the one-day match and the trophy, the Indians wanted revenge and a slight chance of play-off. And the match at Bangalore were dominated by two men. Lancashire's W Pointer and Karnataka's Tareq Durani.
Durani wasn't stellar in the first innings, but then again, most others weren't either. Lancashire, and in particular Hashim Amla, were allowed to run away to 412, and manager Mørk was seen cursing as all his other bowlers were hit around the park. Only Durani performed respectably, bowling 36 overs of spin and grabbing 6 wickets for 109 in the process.
Then came a batting miracle from Abhijit Kale and Sean Maxwell. Pairing up for the second wicket after Howarth got out for 2 as usual, they put on 192 to bemuse Lancashire's bowlers. Eventually, Kale went lbw for a classy 84, but by then Karnataka were right back into the match, effectively 132 for 2 on a wicket that kept getting worse. And with Rangnekar, Keegan, Jones and Borde all hanging around to support Maxwell, Karnataka declared with one wicket left to set a daunting 293 for Lancashire, despite Pointer taking 5 for 87 and taking his total for the match to 10 for 192.
Then came Durani. After the usual tripe was served up by Jones and Sigera in the opening overs, Ali and Durani took over the bowling - and in what style. Durani finally proved his class, bowling a perfect line and a somewhat erratic length that had the batsmen stumped (in Amla's case, literally) on a number of occasions. With Khalid Ali firing in yorkers from the other end, Lancashire succumbed, and but for Amla and Fernando putting on 82 for the sixth wicket, there might not have been a chase at all - they were 170 short with 5 wickets in hand at one point. But when Borde had Amla stumped for a cautious 48, that ended the resistance. Durani had some help from Ali who came back with a lethal second spell, taking 3 for 46, while Durani got to bowl 29 overs on the turner and ended up with a total of 6 for 106 in the innings - similar to his first effort, ending with 12 for 213 and rightly getting man of the match honours.

Given that Karnataka need about 30 points from two games, their manager does realise that the relegation ghost is not only staring them in the face, but dragging them well down into Division 2. It's been an almost-season.
