Four Day - Round 4 Reports (ch-ch-check iiit)

Warwickshire picked up a huge win in their chase for promotion to division 2. At home to the highly rated Western Province side Warwickshire picked up a huge 333 run win.

Warwickshires first innings was based around a fantastic partnership between Daniel Howarth (79) and Upton Wilmott (87). The pair added 134 for the fourth wicket. However the lower order crumbled from 283/5 to 298 all out Important bonus points were missed, and who knows what that might mean come the end the of the season. . Harkness picked up 6 wickets after a top spell of bowling.

Western Province had a face a fired up Ismael Nelson who was keen to impress against his old club. After Gregson removed Llewellyn at 59/1 Western Province never got anything going as Warwickshire knocked them over for 224. Nelson and Wesley Jones had three wickets each, while Macolm Jones and Gregson shared 2 each.

Warwickshire their 2nd innings with a lead of 74 runs. Sathish (120) and Hemanath Kumar (57) then added 144 for the opening wicket. After Hemanath Kumar went, Sriram didn’t hang around for long. Daniel came to the wicket next and proceeded to show what a class act he is. Following up on his 79 in the first innings, he backed up with 106. He found good back up in Rowell (46). Nelson and Wesley Jones combined towards the end to see the score through to 437. Western Province needed an unlikely 502 to win the games.

As Western Province reach 41/0 it was as good as it was going to get. Wickets began tumbling at an almighty rate as Nelson took it to his old team. Nelson picked up 5/48 to take his haul to 8 for the match. Western Province were humbled for 168 going down by 333 runs. The home crowd celebrated into the night while Western Province were set for a very sobering flight home

After the rounds games the table is very close. Canterbury have taken the leader on 56 points. Western Province are points back on 51, with Warwickshire making their move on 50. Things sure are tense in there. Furthermore. In the relegation battle Worcestershire took a huge step towards securing their division 3 status out classing Tasmania. Glamorgan look up the creek with no paddle.

South Australia hit back brilliantly...

well what a come back! down 232 on first innings and facing the prospect of being out of the title race, a magnificent second innings double century to vice captain Hagis Midlane gave the Redbacks a heart stopping victory.
The boys should real courage to come back from that position, but we still sit second due to the fact lancs picked up more bonus points that us in that game. Was a shame Yorkshire fell just short against Surrey, as they keep the pressure on us....

All in all, one of the all time great wins to South Australia, player of the year points went 3 H Midlane 2 H Axelby 1 N Adam

Congratulations mate. Fancy Lancashire losing from that position! Fancy crumbling to 114 all out chasing just 235 odd to win! No unbeaten teams now - very tight!

We'll need to play better than that - so close to throwing away all the good work.

Free State finally get their first 4D win of the year against the troubled ND side.

Free State was sent in to bat first, and it looked like they would continue their shocking run by getting bowled out for 172, the only positive to come out of it was T Ambrose scoring 49 - He has been a huge asset to us, and we would like to thank Colts CC for the generous trade in order to bring him to Free State.

Our bowling got off to a great start, with our number 1 spinner, Roach, getting rid of ND's top 4 (Fleming, Smith, Sangakarra and Styris). After that, Hazare snared the next 2 wickets cheaply. Roach and Halse came back and cleaned up the tail with no problems, ND all out for 162. Roach picking up 4/26 from 16 overs - a solid effort. However it was still a pathetic effort by both teams really.

Our captain, Williams called for a greater effort from the boys in the second innings, however the 2nd innings got off to a shakey start, with Williams and De Bruyn only putting on 45 for the first wicket. Another quick wicket was lost at 72, and things were looking a bit shakey. We were saved yet again by the same person as the first innings, Ambrose. He scored a solid 54 off 74 balls, which helped steer us in the right direction. He was joined by I Javed, who scored the innings of the game with his marathon 143 runs from 250 balls before he holed out to Perera off Lacey's bowling. Guneratne supported him at the other end, and the number 8 scored a healthy 77 runs, bringing us to a total of 430 a.o. Great comeback.

ND was left with a huge task to steal the game from us, however with our shadey 2nd innings efforts this season, anything was possible.

Our star with the ball from the first innings was back again, combined with our new SA recruit B Dennet. Dennet managed to get rid of Smith with a brilliant yorker to clean bowl him. From there that triggered a self destruction from ND. Dennet cleaned up 4 middle order wickets, and Roach finished the rest off. Dennet had 5/54, Roach 4/57. Great effort by those 2 to have ND all out for 234, meaning we broke the 2nd innings voodoo thats haunted us this year, and won by a comfortable 206 runs.

On a sour note Dennet went down on his knee, and consequently will miss 2 weeks with the injury.

Free State 1st Innings 172 a.o - T Ambrose 49, J Guneratne 39, H Lacey 4/32
Northern Districts 1st Innings 162 a.o - S Fleming 49, R Roach 5/26, A Halse 3/30
Free State 2nd Innings 430 a.o - I Javed 143, J Guneratne 77, T Ambrose 54, Z Khan 4/74
Northern Districts 2nd Innings 234 a.o - S Fleming 41, B Dennet 5/54, R Roach 4/57
Free State beats Northern Dictricts by 206 runs.

My Man of the Match goes to R Roach with match figures of 9/83

The Season So Far:

For Karachi it has been a struggle some weeks and a joy the others. With some frustration results.
Guys like G. Gambhir have not stood up as he did last year but have been solid with an av. of 31.5 (OD) and 35 (4D). The two stand outs in my mind have been O. Cole with more than 400 runs (4D) at 67.00 and M. Sami who continues to knock over topline batsman. His stats are:

Matches: 4
Overs: 180
Maidens: 38
Wickets: 31
Runs (against): 570
Average: 18.39
Economy: 3.17
Best Bowling (innings): 7 For 89
5/w (innings): 3
10/w (match): 2

On the weekend Karachi lost to Victoria in a good match. Both teams managed to put largish scores on the board and with once again M. Sami picking up 10 wickets for the match. Overall i was dissapointed but with plenty of room for improvment the boys need to lift next week in the 1 day div 5 game.

I was stunned, actually i had to look twice to see that it was right...

It was all over by the 2nd innings with Lancs again hitting a Massive score, but credit to the SA boys who showed their class in winding them back...

Somerset travelled to ACT to take on the Comets in what was a crucial game in the context of the Division 4 Four Day league...

A Somerset win would see them move within striking distance of a Title, whilst an ACT win would see them keep track with the leaders and still be a BIG chance for the title..

Somerset won the toss and batted 1st, and were in trouble from the beginning..
French had Sharath caught at slip by Platt for 2 and Somerset were 1-7..
A steadying partnership from Shewag and Langer took the vistors to 78 before Shewag fell 3 short of his 50 when caught off Tamhane..
Choughdale, Youhana and Rayadu could only manage 17 between them whilst Langer held the other end up..
Somerset were in Trouble when Langer fell for 64, 6/149...
Soon to be 7/179 when Prasad departed...
The tail wagged a little but Somerset were eventually bowled out for 275.. Donald a solid 43*, whilst for the hosts, Lakers 4/57 was a highlight...

ACT had been patchy at times with the bat this season but got a solid start of 43 before James departed for 25.. Paynter managed 34 before falling to Lawson, 2/81..
The some brilliant batting from Ponting and Platt took the score along to 166 before Platt after just reaching his 50 was Lawson's 2nd, out for 55..
Lara managed only 16, But Ponting and Dawn continued on...
Ponting reached his 100, but was out 8 runs later, Lawson's 3rd, 5/278..
Dawn made 38, and when Tamhane(46*) and Charles(69*) took the score along to 427 ACT declared...
An interesting decision only 152 in front but very confident...

Somerset this time started brilliantly, Sharath and Shewag putting on 102 for the 1st wicket before Sharath departed for 43.. And when Langer and Shewag took the score to 170 things were looking good, but a major collapse saw Somerset lose 8/95 to be all out for a moderate 265....
Shewag the shining light with 88... Charles and French taking 4 a peice for the Hosts...

Needing 113 to win ACT cruised home in only 33 overs, Although losing James for 12, Paynter(50*) and Platt(47*) batted superbly...

A dominating performance and ACT manager Brendon Goff was extremely happy..

Guyana Hit Mid-season Crisis

After Guyana's unbeaten season came to an end against Glamorgan in the fourth round of the One Day competition last week Guyana were looking to hit back against Auckland in the Four Day competition, however Guyana were outclassed and beaten by a better side.

It didn't help Guyana's cause when they lost the toss and were sent in. Early wickets saw Love, Ardley, McKenzie and Jenkins in the pavillion before the 100 runs were up. Some late order resiliance saw Guyana post a somewhat competitive total of 260 with allrounder Ablett top scoring with 46 and Guyanan debutant Tariq scored 39. Plummer was the destroyer for Auckland taking 5-82.

Guyana needed early wickets to be competitive against the strong Auckland batting line-up, still shaken after their loss to Mashonaland. But it was the Auckland batsman who took the initiative and the decisive double century stand between openers Godwin and Roberts took the game away from Guyana. After Godwin and Roberts were removed Guyana ripped through the lower order to restrict Auckland to 350 and 90 run lead Ablett again was the best of the Guyanan players taking 4-67.

Guyana, known for their second innings revivals needed one here, but it was not to be. All players made starts but there were no substantial partnerships to build a big lead and challenge the Auckland batting line-up. Jayawardne top scored with 59, but no other player even got to forty. Guyana scored 237 in their second innings and left Auckland a rather easy total of 147 to chase for victory.

Auckland had no trouble in overhauling Guyana's target, losing only 1 wicket on way to 150 with Roberts left not out on 76. Auckland will regain top spot on the division 5 four day table and Guyana risk falling to fourth. It will be back to the drawing board for the Guyanan management after two poor losses in a row.

Guyana 260

Ablett 46
Tariq 39
Plummer 5-82

Auckland 350

Godwin 143
Roberts 78
Ablett 4-67
Cole 3-69

Guyana 237

Jaywardne 59
Jenkins 37
Plummer 2-42
Kemp 2-45

Auckland 1-150

Godwin 76*
Smith 47*
Perrera 1-28

Queensland is starting to find some form after notching up its second consecutive win in the four day comp. It was a great achievement to knock off Tamil Nadu in both forms of the game in a week.

Queensland batted first and made 312. Batting honours were shared between Tikolo 52, Yashpal 77 and Farhat 50. For Tamil Nadu pandit took 4/87. In reply TN could only manage 225 with Chandrasekh 62 top scoring. Evans consolidated a good season taking 6/76.

In the second innings Qld made 298 with Maher 53 and Farhat 85* passing fifty. Yannick Porter took 4/58. Chasing 386 for victory TN was never in the hunt collapsing for 140. Pettifer took 4 wickets.

Hopes are high that the good form continues and Qld will rise off the lower lines of the table.
