Against all odds, Auckland were somehow able to pull off a comfortable win against the mighty Free State. The WCC comminity remains in shock. :P

Cricketer Of The Year
Well perfect weather and a great looking pitch welcomed both teams as they arrived at the Wankhede Stadium, and with the spinners likely to get a fair bit out of the pitch on the final day it was no surprise that the home team elected to bat after winning the toss.
There was a huge roar as Mumbai’s 2 stars strode to the crease, but those roars turned to deathning silence as in the 4th over Darden flirted with a Stratton delivery outside off stump and tickled one through to the keeper, out for 10, Mumbai 1-14.
Kambli joined Tendulkar and the pair took the score to 76 before the master came once too often at Owen Snow and was stumped by Andy Flower for 40.
Kambli became Stratton’s 2nd wicket as he also tickled one through to Flower, out for 31, Mumbai 3-94.
Kripal Singh and Paranjpe put on a 51 run stand before the youngster became Dennet’s 1st wicket for the season, out for 33, Mumbai now in trouble at 4-145.
Paranjpe was joined by Ex-South Australian Shaun Williams, the pair moved the innings along and the total had reached 231 before the next man fell. Paranjpe forgot about his footwork as he tried to play Snow from the crease and was trapped in front for a well compiled 66.
Francis joined Williams and the pair kept the runs coming. Williams had passed his 50 by the time Francis had departed for 28 after becoming Snow’s 3rd wicket, Mumbai 6-299.
Williams then took control, working with the tail to keep as much of the strike as possible, and eventually passed his 100. However on 101 he became Axelby’s 1st victim, caught by Stratton, Mumbai 7-336.
From there the tail spluttered with the last 3 wickets only adding 13 runs with Axelby claiming his 2nd and Dennet picking up another 2 to have him finish with 3.

Mumbai AO 349
S Williams 101
B Dennet 3-55 (23.4)
O Snow 3-61(10)

South Australia was after a good start and they got it through Adam and Flower. The pair saw off the Mumbai new ball and it wasn’t until the 23rd over that Mumbai struck. With the score on 74, Adam drove at a ball outside off stump only to get an edge and see the ball go straight to the hands of Darden, Adam out for 35.
This brought together the recruits from Kent and they set about building a good total. Flower passed 50 and Jayawardene joined him only to fall to balls later without addition, South Australia 2-157.
Flower was joined by the Redback’s captain Darren Lehmann and the score got to 172 before Flower finally fell for 73, a great start to his South Australian career.
Stratton then joined Lehmann and after a 91 in the One Day game last week he looked in good form getting to 27 before he was trapped in front by Swinburn, a decision which left a little to be desired. French and Lehmann then scored at almost 4 an over for then next 11 overs before Lehmann departed for a well compiled 58, South Australia 5-270.
Owen Snow came and went for 5 and at 6-275 the Redbacks looked in a spot of bother and the possibility of giving up a 1st innings lead was staring them in the face. However last seasons 2 rookies met each other in the middle and began to take Mumbai out of the game.
French and Oliver put on 95 for the 7th wicket on the way passing Mumbai’s 1st innings total, before French finally departed for 61. It didn’t stop there though Ben Dennet joined Oliver and the pair continued to build a big lead. Dennet making 47 before Murtagh’s 2nd wicket ended the 111 run partnership. 3 balls later saw Vic Oliver bring up his 2nd Four Day 100, 3 balls later he was dismissed for 101.
Heath Axelby was Run Out for 0 and South Australia were bowled out for 484.

South Australia AO 484
V Oliver 101
L French 61
D Lehmann 58
M Black 3-102(32)

With a 135 run deficit to wind in first Mumbai had it all in front of them and with the Redbacks boasting a bowling attack which is as strong as any it was going to be even tougher, and it was in the 3rd over when it all started to go bad. Master batsman Sachin Tendulkar got an edge from a Ben Dennet delivery and it was taken by Andy Flower, Mumbai 1-2.
Kambli and Darden tried to get the innings back on track, and with a 76 run stand they did all the hard work but a Axelby top spinner had Kambli in tatters and so where the stumps. Darden and Kripal Singh took the score to 101 before Mumbai’s main hope, Darden on 48 got and edge from and Axelby delivery which was taken by Flower, Mumbai 3-101.
Singh and Paranjpe erased the deficit but could only manage 9 more runs before Paranjpe departed for 26 with Flower getting his 8th dismissal for the game holding onto an edge from a Stratton delivery.
A 39 run stand between Singh and 1st innings hero Williams before the Ex-Redback played a reckless stroke from Dennet and was caught by French for 11. Four overs later things went from bad to worse as Singh was beaten by a brilliant delivery from Snow, bowled for 58, and very next ball Swinburn was caught at short leg by Adam from Snow for a Golden duck, and all of a sudden Mumbai had slumped to 7-198.
Francis and Murtagh took the total past 200 and made it to 227 before Murtagh departed for 15. Savage and Black hung around long enough with Francis to push the score to 242 before Mumbai were bowled out.

Mumbai AO 242
R Kripal Singh 58
H Axelby 3-32(11)
O Snow 3-33(10.1)

Requiring 108 to win South Australia were in the box seat but as is cricket small totals always give trouble. Adam and Flower got off to a solid start taking the score to 33 before Adam departed caught behind off savage for 10. Flower and Jayawardene then pushed the score along to 62 before Flower was beaten by Swinburn removing the off stump, Flower out for 36.
11 Runs later Kripal Singh picked up Jayawardene for 12 and, despite only needing 35 runs Mumbai had a glint of hope. But that was soon washed away as Lehmann and Stratton confidently brought up the victory Lehmann finishing 32* and Stratton 14*, South Australia winning by 7 Wickets and a great start to the season.

South Australia 3-111
A Flower 36
D Lehmann 32*

South Australia 484 & 3-111 defeated Mumbai 349 & 242

History made at Western Australia Cricket Assiociation Ground.

Warwickshire were in trouble as both McDonald and Ramesh departed early with the score only on 47/2. Howarth (87) and Sriram (101) then combined for a superb third wicket stand of 156. No one else was able to make a start and Warwickshire finished all out for 292.

WA made a solid start in their reply reaching 71/1. However all the Warwickshire bowlers chipped in and WA were reduced to 210/9, but a last wicket partnership of 36 between Schofield and Yovich set back Warwickshires plans. Wa were all out for 246, 46 behind.

Warwickshires reply was nothing less than ****. Ramesh (35) and Rowell (43) made starts but were not able to go on. Every other batsmen sucked **** as the visitors were knocked over for 193.

WA needed 240 to win and looked screwed Martyn departed leaving them 94/4. But Donald on four day debut dug deep, as wickets continued falling around him. WA reached 217/7 has victory seemed within reach. However in the Kaneria had Harkness stumped bringing the score to 217/8. More drama followed as Watambwa, caught behind off the bowling off Hasnain. The tables turning in favour of Warwickshire, with WA now 223/9. All the hope for WA rested with Donald, as he was joined by Yovich. Yovich attacked and cracked 2 boundaries.

As the 83rd over commenced the scores were tied, Kevin Dean, bowling to Yovich. Captain Sriram moved the field in. It appeared WA had stolen victory. However, it was not to be. Dean's ball was a superb off cutter, and picked up a thick outside edge which went straight to Trevor Rowell at 2nd slip. Warwickshire celebrated, and the game ended in a stunning tie. Dean finished with four wickets...

Mashonaland win Slogan Cup

Guyana traveled to Zimbabwe hoping to improve on their disappointing first one day game. Guyana captain McKenzie won the toss and elected to field on a surprisingly green Harare wicket. After a rather quick start from the Mashonaland openers Kasprowicz (2-58) found a bit of extra pace to remove Ward’s (seven) middle stump with the score 1-21 after 6.1 overs. Gallian (85) and Mongia (40) took away any advantage that Guyana gained by combining for a cautious partnership of 73 before first change Hills (1-28) found the inside edge of Mongia’s bat and remove his leg stump. Mashonaland continued to build steady partnerships, but were never able to get on top of the Guyana bowling with Guyana restricting Mashonaland to 298. Rogers (61) and Adams (40) were the other main contributors for Mashonaland while MacKenzie was the main striker for Guyana taking 4-48 (16.4)

Guyana’s batsman were unable to gain any initiative early on over the Mashonaland bowlers who bowled a tight line. Hills (10), Sarwan (11), Chopra (32) and Francis (27) all got starts but couldn’t go on with their innings. Mushtaq (4-48) and Bradley (2-56) restricted Guyana early. It wasn’t until Adamson (35) joined McKenzie (70) that Guyana were able to build a good partnership. Together they took the total from 4-100 to 5-196 when Adamson failed to convert his start and lofted a simple catch to Adams at cover off Gallian (1-24). McKenzie fell six runs later and Guyana were in real trouble at 6-202, however for the second time in the week a fighting half century from drafted wicket keeper Baugh battled with the tail to take Guyana towards a lead, when Baugh fell for 62 Guyana were three runs short of Mashonaland’s first innings score. A last wicket partnership between Mackenzie (19) and Kasprowicz (21) gave Guyana a handy 37 run lead.

Mashonaland easily overhauled Guyana’s lead and were easily moving towards setting Guyana a very hard chase in the final innings of the match when Gillian (35) fell to Cole (2-65) in the 21st over. Again Mashonaland build steady partnerships but were never able to get away from Guyana’s bowling. The highlight of the Mashonaland innings was a fighting 76 from Symonds. Again the pick of the Guyana bowlers was Mackenzie who took 4-36 to have match figures of 8-84. Mashonaland finished with 265 of 96.4 overs leaving Guyana needing a total of 228 for victory.

Guyana were always going to struggle chasing a total of over 200. Despite a 40 from Sarwan and 31 from skipper McKenzie Guyana’s batsman struggled to get into double figures. Cole was the only other Guyana batsman to post any total of note with 39. Guyana finished 40 runs short all out for 188 with Mackay taking 3-51. Despite the loss it was a much improved effort from the Guyanese who will look to travel to England next week to hopefully gain a victory over the equally disappointing Somerset in round two of the one day tournament. Guyana will have to wait until round 6 before they get another chance to get their hands on the Slogan cup when the host Mashonaland at Bourda.

Mashonaland 298

Gallian 85
Rogers 61

Mackenzie 4-48
Kasprowicz 2-58

Guyana 335

McKenzie 70
Baugh 62

Mushtaq 4-48

Mashonaland 265

Symonds 76

Mackenzie 4-36
Giles 2-26

Guyana 188

You only have 16 players to work with though. I don't see how many changes you can make that would equate to better than your best XI.

In a match where the oddsmakers gave Surrey no chance, they battled for a brave draw.

Proud of them!

Win to Lancashire by 67 runs.

A couple of new bowling stars may have arrived on the scene in A.Salvi (18 yrs) and Y.Engineer (19 yrs). And with E.Kellar also being 19 yrs old, the future may look good in the bowling department!
All I need now is for paceman Q.Boxall (18 yrs) and spinner S.Malik (21 yrs) to perform and I'll have another bowling attack to be feared. Maybe S.Harwood won't be so sorely missed after all!
And M.Kaif (22 yrs) smashing an unbeaten century!

But still early days. This win might just be a flash in the pan.

Province Jump to Fast Start

Western Province confirmed themeselves as being one of the front runners for the division 4, four day competition.

The Somerset side were troubled from the start by a fiery pace barrage from debutant Bishop Matthie who obviously wasn't effected by first match nerves taking 5-34. Somersets' lower order however provided some rear guard action taking the score from 8-186 to 242 all out thanks to some solid batting from Akhtar and Vaas.

Province began their innings well despite star batsman Llewellyn being dismissed for 9. Richardson, Shewag and Funston all made good starts getting into the 40's but much to the credit of the Somerset bowlers who kept on fighting weren't allowed to go on with it, keeping the game in the balance. Captain Thilan Samaraweera was the first to cross 50 for the game only to be dismissed a ball later for 51. The Province tail then crumbled to be all out for 270 allowing for a tense finish.

Once again the Somerset innings never gained momentum as the Province bowlers got on top. This time it was the spin of Samaraweera that was troubled Somerset as he set about taking 4-28 and destroying any hopes of a large Somerset total. Once again however the lower order in Butche (51) and Dani (39) were able to add some respectabiliy to the scorecard leaving Province needing 204 to take the win.

The experience of Akhtar and Caddick had the Province side worried as they both took early wickets however last seasons stars Rickman (50*) and Llewellyn (72) remained strong and guided the side to victory with 5 wickets in hand to complete an important first round victory for the South Africans.

SLATS4EVERs' word
"A tough game but it was great to come away with a win. Matthie and Samsie were great out there and definately the stars but is was good to see everyone really contribute and the signs are there that we might go ok this season"

2- Matthie

Qld has started its four day campaign with a fine win over Tamil Nadu. TN batted first and got to 245 with Webster getting 64*. Stuart was thw pick of the bowlers taking 4/62.

Qld responded with 328. Hayden 62, Tully 67 and Maher 69 were the best. Webster took 4/55, a good all round effort.

TN then got 251 with no significant contribution. The bowlers also shared the wickets.

The final chase was easy and Qld only lost 2 wickets. Bradshaw making an unbeaten 85.

It was a good team effort with no real standout. Hayden and Bradshaw batted well and Stuart and Trott bowled well.

Y.Engineer was part of a transfer deal involving J.Madanagopal and M.Pushpakumara going to Colts in return for S.Malik and Y.Engineer.
Some managers preferred experience to untried youth due to the way the new sim works.
I was happy to take promising youth in the hope that some might turn out to be gems. I'm hoping that M.Kaif, A.Salvi and Y.Engineer back up my policy.
However as stated, this is just one game and there's a long way to go yet!

Well I've now lost 3/3 and I haven't come close to winning. It really looks as though being absent for the draft has cost me here. I think my starting XIs are about equal with last year but obviously the new sim doesn't like me, rather like the bookmakers.
