Well perfect weather and a great looking pitch welcomed both teams as they arrived at the Wankhede Stadium, and with the spinners likely to get a fair bit out of the pitch on the final day it was no surprise that the home team elected to bat after winning the toss.
There was a huge roar as Mumbai’s 2 stars strode to the crease, but those roars turned to deathning silence as in the 4th over Darden flirted with a Stratton delivery outside off stump and tickled one through to the keeper, out for 10, Mumbai 1-14.
Kambli joined Tendulkar and the pair took the score to 76 before the master came once too often at Owen Snow and was stumped by Andy Flower for 40.
Kambli became Stratton’s 2nd wicket as he also tickled one through to Flower, out for 31, Mumbai 3-94.
Kripal Singh and Paranjpe put on a 51 run stand before the youngster became Dennet’s 1st wicket for the season, out for 33, Mumbai now in trouble at 4-145.
Paranjpe was joined by Ex-South Australian Shaun Williams, the pair moved the innings along and the total had reached 231 before the next man fell. Paranjpe forgot about his footwork as he tried to play Snow from the crease and was trapped in front for a well compiled 66.
Francis joined Williams and the pair kept the runs coming. Williams had passed his 50 by the time Francis had departed for 28 after becoming Snow’s 3rd wicket, Mumbai 6-299.
Williams then took control, working with the tail to keep as much of the strike as possible, and eventually passed his 100. However on 101 he became Axelby’s 1st victim, caught by Stratton, Mumbai 7-336.
From there the tail spluttered with the last 3 wickets only adding 13 runs with Axelby claiming his 2nd and Dennet picking up another 2 to have him finish with 3.

South Australia was after a good start and they got it through Adam and Flower. The pair saw off the Mumbai new ball and it wasn’t until the 23rd over that Mumbai struck. With the score on 74, Adam drove at a ball outside off stump only to get an edge and see the ball go straight to the hands of Darden, Adam out for 35.
This brought together the recruits from Kent and they set about building a good total. Flower passed 50 and Jayawardene joined him only to fall to balls later without addition, South Australia 2-157.
Flower was joined by the Redback’s captain Darren Lehmann and the score got to 172 before Flower finally fell for 73, a great start to his South Australian career.
Stratton then joined Lehmann and after a 91 in the One Day game last week he looked in good form getting to 27 before he was trapped in front by Swinburn, a decision which left a little to be desired. French and Lehmann then scored at almost 4 an over for then next 11 overs before Lehmann departed for a well compiled 58, South Australia 5-270.
Owen Snow came and went for 5 and at 6-275 the Redbacks looked in a spot of bother and the possibility of giving up a 1st innings lead was staring them in the face. However last seasons 2 rookies met each other in the middle and began to take Mumbai out of the game.
French and Oliver put on 95 for the 7th wicket on the way passing Mumbai’s 1st innings total, before French finally departed for 61. It didn’t stop there though Ben Dennet joined Oliver and the pair continued to build a big lead. Dennet making 47 before Murtagh’s 2nd wicket ended the 111 run partnership. 3 balls later saw Vic Oliver bring up his 2nd Four Day 100, 3 balls later he was dismissed for 101.
Heath Axelby was Run Out for 0 and South Australia were bowled out for 484.

With a 135 run deficit to wind in first Mumbai had it all in front of them and with the Redbacks boasting a bowling attack which is as strong as any it was going to be even tougher, and it was in the 3rd over when it all started to go bad. Master batsman Sachin Tendulkar got an edge from a Ben Dennet delivery and it was taken by Andy Flower, Mumbai 1-2.
Kambli and Darden tried to get the innings back on track, and with a 76 run stand they did all the hard work but a Axelby top spinner had Kambli in tatters and so where the stumps. Darden and Kripal Singh took the score to 101 before Mumbai’s main hope, Darden on 48 got and edge from and Axelby delivery which was taken by Flower, Mumbai 3-101.
Singh and Paranjpe erased the deficit but could only manage 9 more runs before Paranjpe departed for 26 with Flower getting his 8th dismissal for the game holding onto an edge from a Stratton delivery.
A 39 run stand between Singh and 1st innings hero Williams before the Ex-Redback played a reckless stroke from Dennet and was caught by French for 11. Four overs later things went from bad to worse as Singh was beaten by a brilliant delivery from Snow, bowled for 58, and very next ball Swinburn was caught at short leg by Adam from Snow for a Golden duck, and all of a sudden Mumbai had slumped to 7-198.
Francis and Murtagh took the total past 200 and made it to 227 before Murtagh departed for 15. Savage and Black hung around long enough with Francis to push the score to 242 before Mumbai were bowled out.

Requiring 108 to win South Australia were in the box seat but as is cricket small totals always give trouble. Adam and Flower got off to a solid start taking the score to 33 before Adam departed caught behind off savage for 10. Flower and Jayawardene then pushed the score along to 62 before Flower was beaten by Swinburn removing the off stump, Flower out for 36.
11 Runs later Kripal Singh picked up Jayawardene for 12 and, despite only needing 35 runs Mumbai had a glint of hope. But that was soon washed away as Lehmann and Stratton confidently brought up the victory Lehmann finishing 32* and Stratton 14*, South Australia winning by 7 Wickets and a great start to the season.
