Jayawardne and Jenkins Break Record as Guyana Hit Back

Guyana hit back after a disapointing first round in the one day competition with a first round victory in the four day competition winning by an innings and 95 runs. Guyana were lead by captain Jayawardne (207) and new World Club Cricket prodigy Jenkins (242) in a record breaking fourth wicket partnership of 458.

Guyana elected to bat first and were in a spot of bother at 3-115 and Jamaica were looking good. However, Jayawardne and Jenkins combined in a wonderful partnership that has the WCC community sitting up and taking notice of the Guyana side. The partnership of 458 was a mixture of patience and elegance as the two classy batsman showed what could be done on a pitch that was getting flatter by the delivery. Jenkins in particular never looked in trouble, there were no false shorts, nor were there any chances as he continued to pile on the runs and show his class. In his two innings this season Jenkins has piled on 345 runs. Guyana were eventually bowled out for 622 as not many of the other batsman put up a fight.

Jamaica got off to a very good start with the opening pair reaching 104, however new Guyana recruit Zulch (4-17) took four quick wickets which reduced Jamaica to 4-132. K Powar kept the Guyana attack at bay as he compiled an assured 103 not out, but it would not be enough as Jamaica were bowled out for 341, 281 runs behind Guyana.

Guyana enforced the follow on as Zulch (5-37) again destroyed the Jamaican batsman as Jamaica were dismissed for 186.

Guyana will be hoping to take this form into their second one day clash against Tasmania at home.

Onto the Match Report

Free State started off their 4D campaign in solid style.

Captain Dave Hussey decided to make the most of the green tinge to the pitch and sent Mashonaland in. They got off to an OK start with the first wicket falling at 52, but from there it was downhill with Free State rookie D Bent and new recruit Naved Ul Hasan holding nothing back in a spirited spell of bowling. From 1/52, to 4/53 and finally all out for 116. Bent picking up good figures of 2/9 from 8, and even better figures from Ul-Hasan, with 7/39.

With 2 quick wickets falling, and Free State struggling at 2/9 it gave Mashonaland a dim torchlight at the end of a long tunnel. However FS 'keeper T Ambrose and recruit F Iqbal quickly turned that light off - With Ambrose making a well played 99 and Iqbal a pleasent 114 pushing the team total to 362.

The heartache continued for Mashonaland in the 2nd innings with the 2 destroyers from the first innings continuing that fashion. Bent ripped through the top order taking the first 4 wickets, then stepped in his partner in crime Ul-Hasan who dismantled the lower order. There were 2 positives from that 2nd innings from Mashonalands point of view. 1. They passed their first innings total, and 2. Russel Arnold hitting an unbeaten half century in their total of 191 all out. Bent picked up 5/33 to give him match figures of 7/42 and Naved Ul-Hasan got 4/42 to give him match figures of 11/81 and MotM honours.

All up, a win of an innings and 55 runs for the Free State XI. Happy with the start, but as with last years Division 5 comp consistancy will be the key to the title.

Somerset didn't exactly stun the cricket world with its win over Worcs today, but instead played very good, solid cricket. Initially bowling Worcs out for 202 in the first innings, with debutant Collyer taking 3 wickets, Somerset compiled 250 when it was their turn to bat. Mullick and newly appointed captain Donald made half centuries.

Worcs then made another average score of 203. Maqbool was the star this time around with 4 wickets. Somerset were left with just over 150 to chase, which they did with 7 players to spare. Mullick again played well, scoring an unbeaten 79.

After the contest Somerset coach Mr. P said he was happy to take the points, but still expected more of his side.

Team Effort Saves Karnataka
Magnificent Effort In Battle Of India

Karnataka's four-day team recovered from 27/7 with a healthy effort to post a comfortable 154-run win in the first match in the WCC four-day Division Two. After Chugati had ripped through the top-order, removing Borde, Kale, Wilkins and Kripal Singh for ducks, Howarth smacked the remaining bowlers for a whirlwind 127 off 175 balls. Chugati was worst hit, taking 15 overs for 74, while Kundrean bowled 16 overs for 62. Healthy partnership with Wadekar, Engineer and Ali secured a reasonable score of 220.

Sachin Tendulkar and L Owen ran away with it for Mumbai in the early overs, sending them to 145/1, but a good team effort where Dulip Liyanage snared 3/75, but the best bowler was indubitably Aditya Jones. A welcome return to form for the all-rounder saw him remove Tendulkar for 108 and Goud and Tait for ducks, and only an eighth-wicket partnership between Remmington and Pushpakumara gave Mumbai a slender 71-run lead.

The early swing was completely gone from the Bangalore pitch, and Chugati - after getting an early breakthrough with having Borde lbw on 8 - was hammered about. All the batsmen got starts as Karnataka smacked runs at four an over, Kripal Singh the hero with 155* while Abhijit Kale scored 140. Maxwell could safely declare at 523/7, 462 ahead, and with a bit more than a day to spare.

Adhikari and Tendulkar saw off the challenge under the fading light at Bangalore, but the fourth day was awful for Mumbai. Losing four wickets reasonably cheaply, only Owen offered some resistance, but Liyanage and Engineer struggled with getting out of a dead pitch and were hammered by Owen and Clarke. Pradeep Engineer ended with figures of 0/91, and at 230/4, it looked like Mumbai were winning it. That was as close as they got. A fiery spell from Aditya Jones saw eight overs being bowled for 19, yielding five wickets, of Clarke, Remmington, Tait, Pushpakumara and Chugati. With Kunderan giving an inside edge which was gratefully held by a forward-diving Borde, Vijay Wadekar took his third wicket of the innings and the sixth of the day (ending with 6/51 off 19 overs), and is proving to be a promising spin bowler for the Karnataka side. However, Aditya Jones' 8/92 was enough to see him become Man of the Match.

After beating Northern Districts by 93 runs in the OD opener, Tasmania slid to a defeat of the same margin, after failing to capitalise on a 139 run lead.
The match started promisingly, with 3 quick wickets leaving Victoria reeling at 23-3. Schiller and Kaif led the way with a partnership of 62, before they fell to Sharma and Rice respectively. Yapp top-scored with 46 though before falling to Usman Sammels. Akram was the pick of the bowlers, with 4-45 after cleaning up the tail.
Tasmania then came in to bat, and again lost Rowell early. The rest of the top 7 all made starts, but it was only Symonds(64) and Sharma(57) who were able to make half centuries. Harwood quickly wrapped up the innings after Sharma's departure, to finish with figures of 8-64.
In thier second innings, Victoria were a different side. The batsmen capitalised on poor Tassie bowling with top scorer Beasley falling just short of his hundred as Victoria finished on 418 all out with Akram again the best bowler taking 4-83.
This left Tasmania needing 280 runs for victory, and although the pitch was deteriorating it looked a gettable target. Unfortunately Harvey and Harwood bowled immacutely sharing 9 wickets between them. Only Rowell offered genuine resistance scoring 93 and Murray Goodwin was left stranded on 24 after Akram was caught at second slip by Beasley off Harvey.

Man of the Match: S Harwood for match figures of 12-123.

KENT v LANCASHIRE

The home side Kent batted first and made a disastrous start, crashing to 12/3.
A resolute fourth wicket stand between A.Christian (81) and D.Richards (35) recovered the situation, but when the partnership was broken at 96/4, the rot set in again as Kent slumped to 124/6.
A.Christian found another stubborn ally in R.Olney (37no) as 55 runs were added for the seventh wicket, but once Christian fell to M.Aronstam, the Kent innings folded meekly as the tailenders fell to a fired up K.Dean who finished with 5/49.
Kent all out for 186.

Lancashire manager Graham Banks had come under a lot of criticism in the off season for trading away the proven champion keeper R.Dravid in a package deal that saw the inexperienced, but promising youngster M.Aronstam come to Lancashire.
Aronstam proceeded to leave his detractors with egg on their faces as he crafted a magnificent innings of 116 to hold the Lancashire top order together.
At 55/4 Lancashire were looking at struggling to do much better than Kent had done, but the wily old veteran M.Walker (93) helped Aronstam add 133 for the fifth wicket to put the visitors back on top.
Then allrounder H.Fernando helped the Lancashire tail wag strongly as he smashed his way to 100no.
Lancashire all out for 408 with a big first innings lead of 222 runs.
R.Stratton was the most successful of the Kent bowlers with 4/98.

Kent made a more solid start to their second innings with experienced opener A.Muzumdar (61) in good touch as the score moved through to 78/1.
However when young pace sensation Y.Mongia struck with two wickets in two balls, Kent were again in trouble at 78/3 and when Muzumdar fell to Aronstam soon after it was 94/4.
D.Richards (43) and R.Stratton (21) put together a useful stand of 60 for the fifth wicket, but again the tail folded with H.Fernando (5/62) being the destroyer this time and Kent were all out for 196.

A win to Lancashire by an innings and 26 runs.

KENT – 186

A.Christian – 81
R.Olney – 37no
D.Richards – 35
K.Dean – 5/49
Y.Mongia – 3/57

LANCASHIRE – 408

M.Aronstam – 116
H.Fernando – 100no
M.Walker – 93
R.Stratton – 4/98

KENT – 196

A.Muzumdar – 61
D.Richards – 43
H.Fernando – 5/62

Round 1 - Kent Match Report

A disappointing start to the 1st Class season for Kent as they went down to a very well drilled Lancashire side. Kent batted first in what were very friendly bowling conditions at Canterbury. Kent got of to what was the worst possible start with the top three back into the stands before many of the support had got settled into their seats. After Lancashire’s quicks had put the Kent on the back foot at 3/12, the middle order fought back with Christian and Richards. After a classily 74 run partnership by these batsmen Y Mongia got Richards (35) plumb in front. Mongia then triggered a middle order collapse with three quicks, which included Richards, Stratton and Singh. At 6/124 thing looked really bad for, but Christian and Olney tired to get Kent innings back on track, with a good 55 run partnership. But when S Munir caught Christain off the bowling of Aronstam for 81, Lancashire brought back on K Dean who rolled the Kent tail to give him figures of 5/49 and dismissed Kent for a pathetic 186.

After brilliant opening spell from Kent all rounder R Stratton, where he sent four of the Lancashire top order back to the stands with the score at 55, Kent could sense that they were about to get back into the game. This was until Aronstam (116) and Walker (93) combined for a brilliant 133 run partnership. After Kent broke that partnership and got a couple more wickets and had Lancashire at 7/246, Kent was hopefully of bowling out Lancashire lower order cheaply. This was until H Fernando came out, the big hitting lower order batsmen smashed Kent bowlers all around the park to score an unbeaten 100 off just 133 balls. Finally Kent dismissed Lancashire for 408, which gave Lancashire a 222 run lead on the first innings.

The Kent fight back in the second innings was lead by captain Muzumdar (61) who came out and took on the bowlers. Unfortunately for him he had no support from the other end with Hemp, Jenkins and Christian all failing. Once Muzumdar departed Richards (43) and Stratton (21) both got starts, but unfortunately both didn’t convert their starts into big scores. After they they got out H Fernando cleaned up the tail and helped himself to figures of 5/62. Kent was once again dismissed for under 200, but just 196.

The decision by Kent manger Chaminda to play the extra bowler seem to back fire badly with the extra bowler L Dyer taken no wickets and going for 4 runs a over. Also at 4/96 in the 1st innings and 5/154 in the 2nd innings the extra batsmen could have been useful. Muzumbar, Richards and Christian all looked in good touch at the crease but none of them converted their starts to big scores. On the bowling point of view Stratton was very impressive in his opening spell and was by far Kent best bowlers. The most disappointing thing to come out of the match for Kent was the bowling of Toby Hawkins, rated as Kent’s best bowler and one of the best spinners in WCC, he failed to provide a consistent treat to the batsmen. Allot of work has to be done in the nets before their next FC game against Queensland at Canterbury, if Kent are going to be a threat this season.

well unfortuanatly i dont have my scorecard so cant do an indepth report (on another comp). but WA management and fans are extremyl dissapointed by the efforts by the team. after bowling out canterbury for roughly 260, fergusion 4-30, WA went on to score 290 odd, Parker 80ish. htis gave WA a lead of 30 odd runs, canterbury scored 290 in the second innings, with fergusion again a stand out, 4-61, match figures of 8-91. leaving WA 260ish in the second inings. the batting lineup crumbeled to be all out for 90 odd. back to the nets boys!

Warwickshire Choke to hand Province Win

Province were finally able to leave Warwickshire with a win after a few attempts. Warwickshire fought back after a dissapointing first day and had the game in reach, however stumbled under the pressure.

Province begun to lay a solid platform as they won the toss and batted as Gambhir and Funston ticked the score over quickly as they took the score to 1-157. However Warickshrie then arrested momentum back as Gregson sliced through the Province middle order with a quick aggressive spell as Province lost 4-30. Funston however remained a thorn in Warwickshires side as he teamed up with Friend and the pair added 130 for the sixth wicket to stabilise the ship. Funston's entertaining innings of 170 then came to an end as he fell victim to Gregson's 6th wicket. Just as Warwickshire thought they had struck the crucial blow, Province stepped on the accelerator and Schofield, Jacobs and Kumble all made superb contributions of more than 40 runs each to set up an imposing first innings total of 482.

The new look Province bowling attack set about their task well as new recruit Kumble and young star Tate pegged Warwickshire back to 4-121. Sriram however was still there and looking as solid as a rock and he set about with Kaye to get Warwicks closer to the target. Sriram however lost his wicket at a crucial time and put the Warwickshire lower order under great pressure. However Jones showed superb determination and fight as he made a well constructed 67 to help guide the score to 381.

It was obvious that both sides were feeling tremendous pressure as Province went out to bat a second time. The South Africans' top order were made to look extremely ordinary by disciplined bowling and in many instances got themselves out to silly shots. Jones once again lead Warwickshire this time with the ball, as he picked up 4 wickets and put his side back on top.

With 266 to win, a massive crowd turned out on the final day hoping for a home side win. The early rain clouds parted and things began smoothly for Warwicks. Howarth and Wilmott made the most of a solid start and looked like they might get the runs themselves. With his last roll of the dice Schofield tossed the ball to new recruit Tate just before tea time, and he was able to give Province a glimmer of hope as he dismissed both Howarth and Wilmott. The tension could be felt, as Warwickshire knew they had the game there to be won. However an inspired spell from Friend gave Province victory as once again sloppy batting was the enemy. Friend picked up the final 4 wickets as Province snuck home by 26 runs.

MoM - Q Friend (73, 0, 2-91, 4-26)

Slats4ever: "Over the moon. The side came here to do a job and they did it. They lost their way through the middle of the match and Warwickshire had the better of the middle three days, there's no doubt. However we didn't let our heads drop and came back with a real flourish in the last season. Full credit to the boys and definately good signs for the future"

Queensland started its four day season with a brilliant draw against South Australia. We batted magnificently to post 675 with 4 centurions - Marsden 114, Tikolo 131, Yashpal 104 and Tennison (on debut) 135. The bowlers forced SA to follow on but could not get them out in the second innings in enough time. A great result.

Tasmania made the trip over the straight by the Cat, to meet the Bushrangers at the Junction Oval. The tigers got lucky to start with, won the toss and sent the Victoria’s in. Elliot, Hussey and Beasley went cheaply on the first day. Adding fuel to the speculation that Elliot will be traded to South Australia next season, or face retirement. L Yapp played well, with no one else able to get a start.

It was then Tasmania’s turn to bat, and then begin the Shane Harwood show, taking 8 wicket, 3 in his first and 5 in the last spell. The Tigers eventually all out 306. The Vic batsman had something to prove, and with the pitch looking a little more like the Tullamarine freeway, our middle order got on top of a wayward Tigers attack. Beasley, Kaif and Yapp despatching quiet a few “yum-yums” to the fence.

This left the Tigers with 280 runs to win, and although the pitch was deteriorating it looked a gettable target. Harwood and Harvey had other plans (that involved some hookers back at the hotel room if the game ended early) so quickly mopped up a woeful Tassie tail, and went to the hotel with the points.

Mr P. summed it up. In quite a low-scoring game, Worcestershire were competitive but not quite good enough against Somerset. To have any chance of avoiding relegation, we need to win games like this. Things are looking brighter in OD though after a comfortable first up win.
