Warwickshire defeated Leicester by 113 runs to claim the division 3 one day title, in the process earning themselves automatic promotion into division 2 for next season.
However the night was tense at first. When Astle departed at 39/3, word had come through that Tamil Nadu had scored 275 in their first innings against Canterbury. Everyone was on the edge of their seats fearing the worst, that the Warwickshire side would again fail to deliever when it really counted.
When Rowell went for 30 at 89/4, the game was evenly poised, but then a superb run a ball knock from Michael Clarke of 80, as well as a solid contribution of 69 from McDonald saw the home side reach 244/8.
With the game in Tamil Nadu still not over, there was still alot to play for. Dale and Gregson's opening spell was superb. They helped reduce Leicester to 50/4. By the now the crowd was filling with anticipation, expecting that finally the team had done. At that moment, fans listening in on the game in Tamil Nadu had heard the result. Canterbury had been successful in their chase against Tamil Nadu. A big cheer went up, Warwickshire were champions...!
From then on the game became a huge party. The sell out crowd chanted all kinds of songs, and bowlers helped the cause even further. Kaneria and Hitchcock picked up 2 each. Leicester were now 119/9 and with little to play for. Then Nathan Astle came into the attack, and with his final ever ball in one day cricket, he trapped Cunis in front LBW, to cap off a marvellous win for Warwickshire. Leicester were all out for 131.
As it happened the trophy for the division 3 one day league was at the City of Birmingham Stadium. A stage was erected, and then as it happened, Garfield Sobers was on hand to hand the trophy to Daniel Howarth, the Warwickshire one day captain, who did a marvellous job in his first attempt at the captaining the side. Pitty his batting couldn't match it.
***imagine me having yell over the deafening roar of the crowd while reading this comment***
"Its been a great night. I'm really proud of this team, and I'd like to thanks the fans with putting up with a few seasons of misery. When I started managing Warwickshire the side was quite useless. However, we've been through the tough times, and now lets hope thurr's some good times ahead, as we move on into division 2. Hooray!"
