On his day, pretty much peerless. My favourite trait of his was how he'd wristly flick away quick bowlers like they were spinners - then murder actual spinners.
But there is an element of enigma. For much of his career he averaged about 40, whilst his comrades in the India order for much of the time were Sehwag (50), Dravid (55), SRT (55), Ganguly (43)* meaning Laxman was regarded, and was picked as a number 6.
In what tier do you rank Laxman?
