England in New Zealand 28 Nov-18 Dec 2024 - 3 Tests

Will be very interesting to see who England pick at 3 for the next Test, a gentle introduction to Test cricket on a flat deck and under little scoreboard pressure I know, but Bethell has staked his case after that knock, Pope back up the order is a possibility if Robinson comes and takes the gloves and Stokes up at 3 is also possible (though I’d say the most unlikely option of the three) if he is unable to bowl. Pope has been pretty reliable with the gloves, I suspect the batting lineup will stay the same, think Potts comes in for Woakes in the bowling department, with at least one of Atkinson and Carse being rested for the third Test

Quite right sir. Long live Bazball and its attribute based selections
The interesting thing about Carse is that he isn't some young guy with a few games, he is 29. I don't know if his results at county level have improved much in the last few years?

If anything his batting has improved (which could be an important factor in the post-Woakes era), but his pace is clearly more important to the selectors than his FC record

Test bowling average watch:

Matt Henry 30.25
Tim Southee 30.02

Last 2 years
Henry 11 matches, 57 wickets @ 20.96
Southee 17 matches, 40 wickets @ 38.92

Will Southee get his average back under 30 if he plays tests 2 and/or 3?

I doubt the top seven will change across the series.

Yes, very much this. We - and, it seems, most of the other test teams around the world - seem to go far too quickly to Wagnerball as soon as either a batsman plays some aggressive shots, or the lower order comes in. Against certain players, like say Santner, or Woakes, who have a clear weakness against the short ball, that's fine. But there's no desire to just stick with the basic plan and back your good bowlers to get them out. Instead that plan is totally abandoned and the only available method of dismissal becomes the top edge to someone in the deep (who drops it anyway). I don't know if it's an effect of T20 cricket, where you have to constantly adapt to what the opposition are doing due to the compressed time, but there isn't that same constraint in Test cricket and the pitches tend to have more assistance for the bowlers.

I didn't see all of those overs, but I thought there was always a bit of extra bounce in this pitch, and that all our bowlers looked far more likely when they were attacking the top of off stump rather than trying to bounce them out. And the extra frustrating thing is that on their last tour here England smashed a declined Wagner around and we just haven't learned from that.
I remember that Bairstow innings a couple of years ago when he despatched a few short balls and they just kept bowling them as if it was a net.

His batting has been his stronger suit. If anything his bowling has got worse than it's been in the past for Durham.

But I think the point is we've long tried to pick players based on being able to perform in England but not go for players better suited to away.

They've seen attributes rather than looked at form. His job has been to try and bowl fast for Durham and be a second change to Rushy/Raine/Potts who over his time generally do most of the damage with the new ball. Pitches and conditions don't generally reward that type of bowling in April/May/September. So at times he's been expensive doing a job that wasn't going to reward him.

But we've seen these away pitches definitely suiting him so far. England might have had a bowler for the Ashes all along, while they've persisted with people like Woakes for 2 series there!

With the 4 rounds of Kookaburra games being now June,July and August I believe,it would have been interesting to see how he'd fare in that event. But can't really see him turning out much for Durham next season.

The betting thing hanging over him definitely affected him at the start of last season mind. He clearly knew that was coming as his batting was in the bin too, after having a superb season in 2023 with the bat. His 104* last season when he came back from his ban at Ciderabad. Was a top quality innings of a guy capable of batting 6 in the CC imo.
