It's that time again. Another season is complete, and imo, it's time for a rant. I writing up my rant as we speak (or type, although ironically I can't be doing 2 things at once...whatever)

South Australian Report

The Redbacks this week completed a pretty successful season. It was always going to be tough to mirror the performances of previous sides given that star batsman Darren Lehmann retired pre season. To win the four day title was a massive effort. Every side in the division were top notch, we basically won the vital matches and came out on top pretty comfortably in the end. At the start of the season i was sceptiacal of our four day chances, thinking a top 4 finish would be acceptable, however i was expected one day success. Much to my surprise our one day team only managed to finish 3rd albeit on bet run rate, it was a close competition which we never deserved to win. The CW Bar cup was another target, we can be satisfied to have made the semi finals, but when you make it that far you want to go all the way.

The Four Day Title

We started the season with a home game against Karnataka, on paper we had the stronger team, but they always give a tough game. I guess the season was set up by our first batting display, making 539 was a top effort and eventually set up a comfortable win. Midlane was the star making a hundred on debut for the club, Ferguson and Snow shared the bulk of the wickets. Id say our best win of the season was in round 2 against Kent. Bowling them out for 110 after losing the toss was a confidence builder. Hammett got the first good score of his career and Ferguson again took wickets in promising fashion.

Round 3 saw us lose to Surrey in disapointing fashion, however round 4 we fought back from a first innings deficet of 232 to defeat Lancs. Midlane scoring 222. Captain Heath Axelby lead the way with the ball taking 8 wickets. Our 2nd loss came to Yorkshire. This would probably be the most disapointing loss in WCC history for me, the comp was close and we really had a much better side, Snow took 9 wickets and Haylett made his first solid score in this match.

This then triggered our late season form, firstly flogging Karnataka in round 6, Hammett making a big hundred and Ferguson taking another 5 wickets in the first innings. Round 7 saw us win a gutsy game against Kent, Snow and Axelby were in the wickets again, while the tail wagged to get us some much needed bonus points in the first dig, number 9 K Ferguson made an important 58, to go with David Dawsons 71. A fighting performance in round 8 say SA chase 349 for the loss of only 4 innings in the 4th innings to beat Surrey in the top of the table clash. Midlane made another hundred, while E Graham put in a confidence boosting effort with the ball, claiming 5 vital wickets. SA chased their 2nd massive total in 2 games to beat lancs in round 9. this time 8/368 to win the match. Snow took 8 wickets to go with Midlane pair of half centuries in the match. The final round saw us wrap up the title in fine fashion against a poor Yorkshire. Midlane scored 194 in the second innings demolition, Hammett made his second hundred for the club to cap a fine debut season from the talented youngster. Snow claimed yet another 8 wickets as the best of the bowlers.

SA 127
Surrey 117
Kent 105

The One Day Season

Ill make this much shorter as it was not as exciting finishing 3rd!

We took on Karnataka in round 1, winning by 3 wickets, David Dawson scored his 130 in a match winning performance. Round 2 saw us win at the MCG against the Vics. A good batting performance with Allen scoring 113, but our bowling problems were evident in this game. Our best one day win of the season was against NSW in round 3. after making 4/266, Allen his 2nd ton in a row scoring 115, we restricted them to 9/159 from 50 overs. By far our best one day bowling performance in season 5. Our first loss came i round 4 against Lancs, falling 24 runs short of the target, only Nathan Adam impressed in this match, scoring 86 from 88 balls.

Round 5 saw us destroyed for the second time in a week by Yorkshire. Only managing 110 was a poor effort on a decent pitch. Yovich managed 3/17 in Yorks repy. A second consecutive shocking batting effort saw us slip to 4th on the ladder and in danger of relegation. Bowled out for 123 and offered very little in defending the small total. The first win in 4 one day games came at home against victoria in round 7. chasing 300 to win, Hammett lead the way with 92 from 74 balls, he was assisted by Nath Adam, scoring 66 in good time. For the 3rd time in the season SA were bowled out for under 150. In round 8 NSW dismissed the Redbacks for 104 and chased it in just 17 runs. Higgs and Allen made solid thirties, but no one else stood up again. Round 9 was a good win against eventual champions Lancashire. Will Jefferson finally lived up to his hype in scoring 127 to guide us to an easy victory. Midlane played his finest one day knock of the season in scoring 77. Bond claimed 4 in Lancs innings. With the pressure off and the title out of reach, South Australia hammered Yorkshire in style. making 4/347 with Haylett (95*from 75), Adam (73 from 72) Midlane (72 from 52) and Allen (65 from 56) all sharing the runs. Yovich then destroyed Yorks taking 6/22 in their total of 140.

Lancs 12 +0.20
NSW 12 +0.06
SA 12 -0.03

Karnataka Report:

Four Day:

A good squad just didn't perform at all. Bowlers didn't take wickets and the batsmen mostly averaged around 30 - not good enough. Quite a few changes in the team, but we're still not entirely happy with the squad.

Batsman of the Year: Howard Wilkins - only one who kept his head. Should have got more games with an average around 47.
Bowler of the Year: Tareq Durani - bowled his heart out, and got a fair few wickets in Karnataka's only win of the year.

One Day Season

It was an almost-season, ruined by a dismal week 8. Then, we lost to Lancs by a few runs and to Kent in the cup - destroying our title charge. However, at least the team finished third, avoiding the drop which was possible at the end of the season. Highlight: Beating New South Wales by 250-odd runs.

Batsman of the Year: Sanjay Borde - 504 runs at an average of 56, healthy for a number 3 in OD matches. With openers such as Howarth struggling, he often saved the team.
Bowler of the Year: Lennox Cush - 4 four-wicket-hauls, best five for 36, 24 wickets, strike rate of 21. Enough said. Absolutely stunning bowler.

Player of the Year: Sanjay Borde - turned in a decent performance behind the stumps, beautiful batting in OD, and well enough in FC.

Bring on Division II!

A Tale of Two Forms

It was quite clear what the intentions for Western Province were at the start of the season... to triumph in four day, whilst use the One Day form as a practice arena to try new things. The story in the One Day form wasn't good, not only did Western Province struggle to string good performances together, they found themeselves at the bottom of the whole of WCC, one of the most embaressing events in the clubs long history. For the Four Day side thuogh, they lived up to their reputation, and almost exceeded it, were it not for a final round collapse.

FOUR DAY

Division 3 was always going to be a tussle between three teams, Canterbury, Province and Warwickshire. It followed script as Province didn't lose 1 game to any of the other three sides. Province also defended Newlands very well not dropping a game, however their performance away to Warwickshire and Canterbury left a lot to be desired. Following a dissapointing last round loss to Canterbury Province made their way to Telstra Stadium, and prevailed in a nail biter to gain promotion. Darden lead the side well from the start, and everyone contributed very well.

ONE DAY

The start of the season wasn't bad. Stringing together some good wins in the first half of the season was promising. However just as things began heating up in the 4 day, the cooling off period was on for the OD'ers. The most dissapointing aspect was the bowling.... oh I spose the batting as well. With none of the bowlers avging less than 41. Next season Slats4ever has finally vowed to make a concious effort in building the OD side up and it will be interesting to see what happens.

Awards will follow at the clubs presentation night so stay tuned.

Awesome

Warwickshire have a lot to be proud of from the past season. For starters from 23 games, a rather respectable total of 17 were won. Finally a four day championship was won earning them a place in what should be a highly competitive division 2. In the one dayers second place was earned and eventually promotion in the big league...division 1. Perhaps more importantly we denied Tamil Nadu a place in this division, which was somewhat priceless.

The Cricket Web Bar Cup saw us handed a useful draw, going straight into the third round. After a comfy victory of Surrey we were paired with South Australia in the quarter finals. After a stellor bowling display we were let down by a poor batting effort. However as per usual no one really gave a ****.

One day cricket has proved one of the big successes over the past two season. After taking the title last season, the feeling early on this season was that the club would be doing well to avoid relegation. But after winning our first 4 games, these aspirations soon turned to thoughts of promotion to the bright lights of division 1. The general feeling around town was that the title was there for us to lose. To an extent we became our own enemies towards the end of the season. After beating eventual champions Kent for second time that season, we proceeded to lose to Queensland and Colts, dropping down to third. To make matters worse. captain and star Batsmen, Daniel Howarth and Ismael Nelson were injured. However we came back strong without them. Firstly the woeful Western Australia were accounted for in round 9. Uncharacteristically Western Australia racked up 285. But a stunning display with the bat saw the game won with 5 overs to spare. The Tamil Nadu were given a good ole' fashion ass whiping on the final day of the season to the disgust of their manager. It was a sweet victory under the circumstances. A playoff berth was secured. Only later did we realise how close we had come to winning the whole comp. Kent who had also finished with 7 wins or 14 points beat us by a mere 0.04 on NRR. Looking back 10 more runs here might have been the difference. We at least got the next best thing, a playoff against Victoria at the MCG. With the people of Birmingham behind their team Warwickshire proceeded to gain promotion to division one in clinical fashion.

The stand out from the season was Mike Pascoe. The young bowler took a superb 32 wickets at 12.72. Tyrone Rowell had another solid season with the bat which included Warwickshire's highest ever one day score as he rattled off 149 against Queensland. On the same day Pascoe took a club record 6/24. Ironically it was a day capped off by Warwickshire's first 300+ total in WCC one day cricket.

The four day season as had the previous 2 seasons kicked off with a high amount of anticipation in the air. In the Season 3 we had came second, then proceeded to lose the playoff. A season later we had a poor season finishing third. The club desperately wanted division 2 cricket and finally it will be getting its way next season. The Prefontaine Cup was successfully defended early on against Worcestershire. Howarth and Sriram enjoyed making top scores. All 5 home games were won, the only two defeats coming at Province and Canterbury. With the final round approaching Warwickshire required somewhat of a miracle to overturn a 15 point deficit. After accounting for Tasmania, Canterbury did a huge favour smashing Province. With the two sides locked on 130 points, Warwickshire took the title on having aquired more batting points.

Several talents were unearthed such as exciting youngster Upton Wilmott. Wilmott scored 674 runs at 56.17 including two centuries. Mark Boucher did what Zak McDonald was never able to do in the four dayers, scoring 2 centuries as he built his average up to a very healthy 51.70. Ravi Sathish scored 763 runs at 47, making the opening spot his own. A spot that had been of concern for Warwickshire is not such a burden. Finding him a partner with Hemanath Kumar moving on will be another matter. Captain Sriram had yet another solid season, but again the star was Daniel Howarth. Had his season not been cut short after he dislocated his shoulder he could have potentially threatened the 1000 run mark. He topped the averaged scoring 730 runs at 60.83. The highlight with the ball was Ben Gregson's 9/44 against Glamorgan, the third best bowling analysis ever recorded in WCC. Gregson's 63 wickets saw him go past 150 wickets in WCC. Gregson found a lot of help from Ismael Nelson (39 wickets @ 21), Malcolm Jones (37 wickets @ 23) and Wesley Jones (37 wickets @ 31).

Next season promises to be awesome and stuff...

ACT Season in Review

Well a new atmosphere was in the air going into the 5th WCC Season...

New Manager, and very much a new squad had things looking very different but all the locals were confident...
Former South Australian Manager Brendon Goff replaced local boy Simon Fitzsimmons at the healm of the Comets and brought with him a new attitude. One of hope and confidence, although Goff played down his sides chances before the season saying a playoff place would be deemed a success...

One Day
Division 4 - Champions
Well the One Day season was not as important to ACT as the Four Day, however they excelled showing they are a team on the rise..
In the process 2 new talents were unearthed and will be looked upon as the future of ACT cricket.
Alex Tweedie blasted 593 runs @ 148.25 and backed that up with 12 wickets @ 30 to star in the One Day version of the game. Tweedie single handedly destroyed teams on more then 1 occasion. Also shining was fellow Rookie Fred Platt, Platt scored a solid 500 runs @ 71.43 including 3 blistering centuries. The youngsters were shown the way by senior players like Mick Dawn and Matthew Ramage as ACT won the Division by 2 points..

Four Day
Division 4 - Champions
In a gruelling season ACT managed to overcome a slow start to seal the clubs 2nd ever season double, and also give Goff a back to back double with different clubs after his Season 4 efforts with South Australia..

Somerset were seen as the main rivals and were leading till around 4 rounds to go but a strong finishing ACT overhauled them to seal the title..
Solid performances from the whole squad were put forward but Ponting (827 @ 59), Platt (978 @ 57), Dawn (748 @ 53) and Paynter (842 @ 46) led the way with the bat, whilst Ramage (39 @ 22), Laker (46 @ 23) and the part-time efforts of Tamhane (22 @ 29) all impressed with the ball..

CW Cup
Champions
Although alot of teams weren't focussing on the CW Cup as much as the main competitions, Goff had set this as an important one.. He had never won a match in this tournament over 3 prior seasons.. However he never expected things to go this well..
ACT had a good run through before meeting Goff's former club South Australia in the Semi's. A confident win there set up a meeting with Division 1 One Day Champions Lancashire in the final. In a low-scoring encounter ACT got home and they had completed the 1st ever Clean sweep in WCC. In doing so giving Goff his 8th WCC title..

Overall a season which exceeded all expectations in the Aussie Capital. One which will place alot of pressure on the side in Season 6 with expectations going to be very high...

How will ACT go??? Only time will tell..
