LANCASHIRE
Well – whoever would have predicted before the start of the season that Lancashire would be the flagbearer for English cricket in a strong Division one?
A.Swann led the way in the batting with a superb season scoring three 100’s and three 50’s to average 68.
Another surprise package was the youngster T.Roberts who scored a century and two 50’s to also end up in the top ten averaging over 40.
R.Dravid also made the top ten although his seaon’s OD average was a disappointing 38. What a shame I only found out towards the end of the season when the 4 Day team lists came out that I could use him as my keeper! My other keepers were non-contributors with the bat.
G.Lloyd averaged 41 in all OD games over the season and played his part too.
N.Fairbrother also had a good season with the bat to average in the thirties.
M.Chilton, R.Driver, J.Haynes(wk) and W.Hegg(wk) were all dismal failures with the bat.
As an allrounder, A.Flintoff was solid but nothing more, averaging just over 20 with the bat and taking wickets at an average of just over 30 (rpo-4).
Trouble was that there was a danger that I could lose N.Fairbrother(age 39) and G.Lloyd(33) to retirements and T.Roberts is no top order batsmen in the 4 Day form of the game, so improving the batting for Season Two was a huge priority in end of season trading and the draft to follow. More about that later though!
Of the bowlers, P.Martin stood out taking a sizeable haul of wickets at 21 apiece although to be honest he was a little too expensive for my liking. Aged 34, he was another I might lose to retirement.
C.Schofield started the season slowly and was dropped for a short period, but boy did he come back with a vengeance! He ended the season taking 13 FC wickets at 16 and 19 OD wickets at an average of 18. Add to that his useful batting and there was no way I was going to let him go!
M.Smethurst, J.Anderson (and J.Wood to a lesser extent) were invaluable in that they were always awkward for the opposition batsmen. Their averages don’t reflect the fact that they were very tight. In FC games they both took wickets at an average of 24. It was with some reluctance that I let them both go at season’s end due to trying to build a squad that would be a real handful at both FC and OD level.
K.Hogg and G.Maiden showed early promise, but by season’s end had been consigned to the scrapheap. G.Chapple performed better with bat than ball and was discarded early on as a bowling force.
G.Yates will be a useful pickup for somebody through the draft as he is a solid spinner who also bats a bit. Aged 35 though, he was another retirement risk.
G. Keedy was the only player in the squad not to get a good tryout.
And so a largely unheralded bowling attack per formed out of their skins to successfully defend totals that were gettable for opponents batting second or in restricting run chase totals for their own batsmen.
The end of season trades was a crucial time then for Lancashire.
A stroke of luck when I traded Fairbrother before GB came out with the edict that all players 38+ would be retired at season’s end. In fairness to the opposing manager, GB made an exemption in Fairbrother’s case.
Another stroke of good fortune when careful scrutiny of opposing squads picked up that Surrey would be without a keeper for the following season. I offered Surrey a very useful keeper I’d picked up from Mumbai (V.Mane) and managed to pick up a much needed good batsman in return (M.Ramprakash).
Tamil Nadu’s manager had a surfeit of good batsmen and desperately wanted to strengthen his bowling attack for next season. He was delighted to pick up P.Martin and in turn I was delighted to welcome J.Modanagopal to Lancashire.
Wheeling and dealing saw several useful bowlers coming to Lancashire (A.Noffke, S.Muller and M.Sigera) only to then be pursued relentlessly by other managers and traded to further balance out my squad.
By the end of trading I felt happy that I had a group of players to retain that will make Lancashire a definite threat at both FC and OD level next season – M.Ramprakash, A.Swann, R.Dravid(wk), J.Modanagopal, D.Marsh. M.Beerala, C.Schofield, M.Pushpakumara, R.Munnik, P.Mhambrey, A.Dale and D.Ganesh.
Roll on the draft! And then I guess there’ll be some last minute trades before the start of Season Two. As for my draft pick options, I’ll keep my preferences to myself at this stage. My initial gut feeling is that I’m pleased I only have to make four picks as after the first couple of rounds I don’t think there will be too much of substance left to choose from. I could well be wrong on this though and there will be a few managers out there who will be hoping I am!
WATCH OUT FOR LANCASHIRE NEXT SEASON!
