iirc Geoff Armstrong in his 100 book had 9 XIs and then his all time favourite player at #100 - Doug Walters.

Lawry didn’t make it rip.

(neither did Greenidge)

Yes. He had Herbie Taylor in there ahead of Gordon.

Lawry's solidity v early movement just edges out Walters' fear factor on tracks where he excelled.

.....not a bad take
Tough comparison but Herbie is probably ATVG for being a repeated nuisance to the biggest individual bowling outlier of all time with good output alongside.

Would still give it to Greenidge I think.

Yup, he made 500+ runs in the 49 wicket Barnes series, one of the most underrated and great feats of opening batting.

Yeah that's why Woodcock included him. I think Gooch and Herbie was the final opening pair.

Obviously Barnes missed the final test (Taylor scored 129 across two innings) but even so he was neck and neck with Hobbs of all people across the series. Truly excellent.

Before the final test

Taylor 379
Next SA bat Nourse 199
