Do you need to be recognized as an ATG in your career to qualify as one?

Basically, should it be clear that during your career you are rated among the ATGs, or can someone claim that title after their career is well over?

In responding to this thread, clarify how you define ATG.

I think that maybe you would need to be in the modern day, what with constant discussion and analysis of the game and the great players, not just here but elsewhere. But then again, many people already would’ve had Kohli as an ATG (I know you personally wouldn’t have) about 5 years ago… would they say it now?

Its harder from the past, you have a much smaller amount of opinions and information to go by, there were times when stats weren’t considered as important as well for example.

Definitions and perceptions of players are always changing - so overall yeah I don’t think its necessarily a pre requisite - though it sure helps.

I mean personally? I’m not sure I have a set definition. It comes a bit down to vibes. Like obviously I rate players based quite statistically as you may have noticed, but its more like “this player feels like an ATG/this player does not feel like an ATG as to where I might define the line.

For example James Anderson - I begrudgingly have the **** as an ATG now, for a long time I didn’t have him as one, but he has that vibe (barely) for me now.

I'm here for you if you ever feel the need to talk to someone about such a traumatic thing.
