Both periods were about 8 years.

Puts into account how far ahead of the game Steyn was for a long time. The only two bowlers that even got close to his figures had much smaller sample sizes. Wasim's peak was brilliant and his career average doesn't really account for it that well, but others matched him.

It also has something to do with the competition imo. There were Ambrose, McGrath, Donald and Waqar playing alongside him, of which certainly 3 were overall better than him.

But then, Steyn bowled in a significantly flatter era.
