1st Test at the WACA

Day 1 Summary:

Australia 1st innings 314/5 (93.5 overs)
RT Ponting 59*, GD McGrath 0*

Batting first on a good surface, the Aussies never let the visiting bowlers settle. Hayden and Langer added a busy century in 28.5 overs and continued to register fine half-centuries. The partnership was ultimately terminated at 164, when Hayden (73) was run out brilliantly by Younis Khan's throw from the covers.

Langer batted onward to a fine century and Australia stood at 231/1 at tea. Finally Pakistan found joy as Langer flashed loosely at a wide Shoaib delivery and snicked it into the gloves of Akmal. His was 146 off 244 balls, with 11 fours and 2 sixes, both hit off Shoaib Malik.

Lehmann came but never looked too solid and perished to a disappointing hook shot of Akhtar, caught at deep square leg for 4. Skipper Ponting swept for 3 runs to go to a half-century, then was dropped behind off a beauty from Akhtar immediately after. Clarke (7) lost his middle stump driving away from his body, and suddenly the score was 300/4 from 275/1.

To the surprise of all, Kasprowicz came out as Ponting elected to employ a nightwatchman. To the surprise of few, Sami had him caught at slip for 12 with what turned out to be the final ball of the day. Even more shockingly, McGrath was the next nightwatchman of choice, but did not get to face a ball.

Someone is on holiday...

314/5 with Ponting, Martyn and Gilchrist still to take? Doesn't sound too promising for Pakistan...

Resuming on 314/5, Ricky Ponting was once more dropped by Akmal, this time off the second ball of the day and the bowling of Sami. McGrath (4), however, fended Akhtar to the gully 2 overs later.

Martyn joined his captain and was stroking the ball immediately. The partnership was comfortable and mildly aggressive, and Australia went to lunch at 400/6. The over after the break, Ponting took a single to the covers and registered yet another Test hundred, incredibly hitting just 4 boundaries in the process.

Martyn (67) got to 50 soon after, hitting 7 fours. A miscued pull to midwicket proved the eventual fate of him though, Kaneria getting his first and only success. Gilchrist and Ponting saw the score to tea - 514/7. After tea Ponting reached 150 and was later caught at midoff off Shoaib for a well-played 169.

Gilchrist carried on the charge and was unbeaten on 55 off 80 balls when Shoaib Akhtar took his 6th wicket and finished off the tail. Australia all out for a mighty 582 and Shoaib Akhtar 6/152.

In the 8 overs left on the day, Pakistan lost one wicket and closed at 33/1. Imran Farhat edged a beaut' to Gilchrist for 10.

It was definitely Australia's day, as Pakistan lost 11 wickets in following on after McGrath claimed 6 on the day. Starting at 33/1, a couple of rain delays of 20 minutes each in the first session could not delay Australia's progress. Pakistan went to lunch at 85/3 and Butt (25) and Hameed (24) were back in the pavilion.

It wasn't long after that that stand-in skipper Yousuf Youhana was pouched at short leg off Warne for 15. Younis Khan (27) was then trapped LBW on the back foot by Kasprowicz and it was 117/5. Gilchrist dropped Malik off Warne, and he and Razzaq saw the score to 142/5 at tea.

Just 5 overs after tea, McGrath took his second wicket and Razzaq was out for 16. Akmal received a lovely sixth ball from McGrath and he was caught at fifth slip without scoring. A ball later and it was 8 down - Shoaib Akhtar unable to evade a bouncer and instead gloving to Gilchrist for nought. Sami hit a boundary in making 8, but then pushed at a length ball from McGrath and was caught at second slip. Warne dropped Malik off the same bowler a couple balls after, but Kaneria was soon LBW to Gillespie for 7 and the innings complete - 198 all out.

Still with another 16 overs left in the day and a 384-run deficit, Pakistan was asked to bat again. Salman Butt (0) survived a good LBW shout from Gillespie 5th ball, but lasted just 6 more for no run, caught in the gully. Hameed was missed by Kasprowicz at midon on 16 and was 17 not out at stumps. Farhat was caught at slip off McGrath's final ball of the day - 42/2 at stumps.

Frustrating Pakistan Sinks Again
2nd Test

Soundly beaten in the first Test, Pakistan faced severe injury problems heading into the second match of the 3-Test series. Inzamam-ul-Haq, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Sami and Abdur Razzaq all sat out, with Mohammed Asif making his Test debut and Asim Kamal and Shahid Afridi coming into the team.

Things started brightly with Youhana winning the toss and electing to bat on a good surface. Salman Butt (87) and Imran Farhat (51) both looked in top form and the score was 97/0 at lunch. Almost immediately after, Farhat flicked across the line to Warne and was easily pouched by Damien Martyn at midwicket. Hameed (11), Yousuf Youhana (13) and Younis Khan (3) came and departed with little ease in their stints, the last being Shane Watson's first Test wicket. Watson returned to get topscorer Butt and Pakistan was made to settle for just 274 all out, after being 100/0.

This mostly due to scores of 44 and 41 from Kamal and Afridi respectively, as the tail was bundled out cheaply. Glenn McGrath continued his fine form by grabbing 6/67, while Watson took 2/50.

Unlike Pakistan's, Australia's innings started very poorly. Langer (8), Hayden (8), Clarke (1) and Martyn (1) perished early, with the latter 3 being Mohammad Asif's first Test wickets. Australia was struggling at 22/4 and Pakistan in full control. It was then that the other debutant, Shane Watson stepped in. Dropped on 4 by Afridi, Watson played for an impressive 67 not out, supporting the more experienced captain Ricky Ponting (44) and vice-captain Adam Gilchrist (28) as Australia reached 182 all out.

Still in control with 92 runs in the bank, Pakistan began its second innings. Disaster immediately and Imran Farhat (0) was caught behind to the first ball from Gillespie. Further trouble when Hameed met the same fate two balls after and it was suddenly 0/2 after 3 balls. It would have been worse though, had Martyn held Butt's chance off McGrath before he had scored. Indeed, Martyn then dropped the same man off the same bowler 8 overs later.

Pakistan consolidated to stumps on day two at 25/2. Rains troubled the morning session, but Australia managed to prize out Youhana (15), Butt (18) and Younis Khan (2) between showers. When an early lunch was taken, Pakistan was 48/5, effectively 140/5 in the context of the match. Afridi (4), Akmal (0) and Akhtar (0) lasted less than 3 overs among after lunch and it was a devastating 55/8. Gillespie made Asif (0) his sixth wicket and McGrath had Kamal LBW for 12 to leave Pakistan battered and broken - 61 all out. Only two Australian bowlers and 26 overs were needed.

Thus Australia prepared to chase 154 runs for victory with more than half the match remaining time-wise. Justin Langer (34) was the only casualty before tea, as Australia progressed smoothly to 81/1 in 25 overs. Hayden reached a less-than-fluent half century off 107 balls and was out just 15 runs short of victory. Kaneria was the successful bowler, removing his legstump. One more success came 5 balls after and Clarke was caught close in without scoring. Thus it was left to Ponting (46 not out) and Martyn (5 not out) to see the home team to victory.

Ah, the reason is simple. The Test ended on day four (predictably) and I had thought I posted it, as I was knocked off the internet in the process of doing so. I assumed it would have registered though and did not bother to check. Call it technical difficulties and enjoy our delayed package...

Not the most inspiring day in the field for Australia, but they still managed to get the job done comfortably. The sloppiness started early when Hayden missed Khan in the slips off McGrath before he had scored. Four balls later, Gillespie removed Hameed (27)'s offstump, but then he had Youhana dropped by Kasprowicz on 1.

The drop didn't prove at all costly though, and Youhana met the same spectacular fate as Hameed. Younis Khan was intent on making his chance count though, and he added 67 with Shoaib Malik (23) until the latter was out to the last ball of the session - 122/5 at lunch.

After lunch Khan reached his half-century from 92 balls and looked good for a century. He was missed, a very hard chance, by Gilchrist when 56 and began to increase the scoring tempo a bit. Eventually Warne had the last laugh, albeit due a dubious decision by Steve Bucknor. Younis Khan was given out caught close in by Langer for 81.

Akmal got off his pair, but slapped Warne to Gillespie at midon for 1. At tea Pakistan was 200/7 and the end very near. Upon the resumption Razzaq (33) was caught and bowled softly by Lehmann and Akhtar (17) caught by Martyn off a top-edged hook. The last rights were read by Lehmann, and he found Sami (0)'s top edge whilst he attempted to cut.

Australia won by an innings and 164 runs.
