  • Jefferson Drake's chances at qualifying for the End of Year Masters in New York have taken a hit as he fell to rival and world No. 9 Illya Altman in the final in St. Petersberg. Drake had lost just one set all week (1-6 to János Varga in the quarter finals) before he gave up a one-set lead against the Ukrainian to fall just short of his fifth tour title 6-7(3), 6-3, 6-4. The loss means Drake sits some 145 points behind Altman, and 220 points behind eighth placed Rasmus Olesen with just the Paris Masters to play. Altman and Olesen, meanwhile, will look to add more points when they play in Valencia and Basel respectively next week.
  • Heath Davis produced a good performance this week as he made it to the quarter finals before stumbling against former world No. 5 Zhijun Sun. The Chinese gun dropped the second set in a lengthy tiebreak, before crawling back to secure a 7-5, 6-7(8), 6-3 win. Davis' doubles partner Jojo Mustard fell a round earlier in a disappointing loss to Russian wildcard and world No. 182 Yevgeny Pushkov 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
  • The real story of the week came in the form of Israel's Tal Cohen who backed up a finals appearance in Stockholm with a semi final in Russia. Cohen, who suffered a dramatic drop down the rankings mid-season, had staged a late recovery and took big wins over Oneil Stewart and Dmitry Orlov before falling to Drake in the semis.

  • In the doubles draw, Hugh James & Ralph Robinson came out of a tough field to clinch yet another title and to firm as favourites for the Year End Masters. They claimed a 7-6(3), 6-3 win over underdogs Oliver Engel & Gunther Heug to secure the trophy. Despite not having anything to gain from this tournament after already qualifying for Flushing Meadows, both Drake and Martti Korpinen (3-6, 6-7(2)) and Davis and Mustard (3-6, 6-4, 7-10) fell to the surprising duo.

  • American Rick Henson has further boosted his chances of sneaking a spot in at the End of Year Masters after clinching a dominant 6-2, 6-3 win over Ion Andueza in the final of Vienna. Andueza had stunned top seed Juan Moreno in the semifinals to come from a set down to advance 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, but was no match for the second seed who did not drop a set all week and comfortably looked the best player.
  • For CWLand, Scotland Rivers was the best performed as he advanced to the quarters before a loss to Andueza in straight sets. Rivers had just a day earlier bested Antonio Bachunelli in a dominant 6-4, 6-2 thumping. Jarkko Maxum also joined him in the quarters, and he too fell in straight sets to Henson 4-6, 2-6.
  • Qualifier Matt Bre could not advance past the second round as Brazil's Dênis Rodrígues claimed a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 win.

  • The late season form of duo Rob Bowenburg & Jarkko Maxum continued as they made it all the way to the final before falling to Brazil's Dênis Rodrígues & Roberto Santos. The third seeds won a tense battle on centre court 7-6(5), 5-7, 10-6 to end a strong week from the CWLanders that saw them beat Mark Harmel & Yves Parmentier.

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)
  • Canada's Davis Kennedy's chances of the Year End Finals in NYC remain slim, but they were kept alive with a three-set win over local hope Patrick Pascaul in the final of the indoor tournament in Lyon. The third seed, who was granted a wildcard into next week's tournament in Valencia, played sensational tennis all week and spoiled the French party to take a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over the fourth seed. Pascaul, meanwhile, earned his spot in the final by upsetting top seed Henry Charles in the semis.
  • The biggest upset came in the quarters as second seed Dwayne Murdoch's finals hopes all but evaporated as he was stunned by Swede Björn Donaldson 6-2, 7-6(2).

  • In the doubles, it was business as usual for Hayden & Ross Onwye as they claimed the titles with a 3-6, 6-1, 10-3 thrashing of unseeded Czechs Petr Brožik & Václav Zeman.

  • In the final of the Challenger in Buenos Aires, seventh seed Felipe Menon upstaged second seed and favourite Jefferson Quezada 6-2, 6-3. Menon had a rough start to the week, but hit his stride and never looked back in a confident display on the Argentinian clay.
  • For CWLand, Marcuss Deane won the battle against Rick Langley 6-4, 6-2, but his big serving deserted him in the quarters as he fell to local Guilermo Crespo 5-7, 6-4, 4-6.

  • In the doubles final, locals Juan-Pablo Serrano & Xavier Suarez claimed their second Challenger title with a 6-3, 6-4 win over young guns Harry Thompson & Mario Timko.

Blundell/Machado out of Paris, NY

Seventh ranked doubles outfit Morton Blundell & Carlos Machado have withdrawn from both the Paris Masters and the End of Year Finals at Flushing Meadows with both players unlikely to be fit. Blundell was already struggling with a torn hamstring, and any prospect of an early return was out the window with news that Machado had fractured an arm that will keep him out of action for a couple of weeks. The news blows open the race for the eighth spot wide open, with the likes of Varga/Varga, Cohen/Teper and Bowenburg/Maxum possibly in with a chance.

Three out for Paris

The updated Entry List for the Paris Masters has been released, with Ivan Genov, Jason Bradley and David Champion joining Radivoj Daneu on the casualty list as all three ended their seasons through injury.

Gryzlov to depart in Paris

Former Grand Slam finalist Vladimir Gryzlov will bow out of action in Paris after a stellar career on the amateur circuit. The 40-year old Russian was granted one of three wildcards into the event, and will play his last singles match in France. "It has been great to see tennis get the recognition and the funding it deserves," Gryzlov wrote on his website. "Unfortunately the game has passed me by for now, but I hope to continue on with doubles tennis next year."

The season hasn't been without its highlights for the oldest man on tour, though, with a quarter final appearance in Doha. He will play both singles and doubles in Basel this week, before ending his career in the final Masters event of the season.

Year End Finals Update

Season I Year-to-Date ATP Ranking Points (2 November, I)

Singles

Qualified

Still in the Running

1 - The one in parenthesis is the total points they can have.
2 - World No. 15 Dwayne Murdoch leads Kennedy and Varga on points, but will only play Paris and cannot gain enough points to score as many points as the fewest Olesen can achieve.

Varga essentially has no chance of qualifying; he needs to win both Basel and Paris and hope that Olesen loses his first round clash to Boniek in Basel and then bows out second round in Paris. However, should Daneu not pull up for the event it throws the race wide open.

EDIT: Great spelling of scheduled...

Good to see an update. Decent progress for Davis, had a chance against the Chinese guy, but couldn't follow through after winning the 2nd.

Cricketer Of The Year
Valencia Open
Valencia, Spain (Indoor Hard)

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)

  • Seventh seed Randy Smeltz has started well in Valencia after booking his place in the second round at the Valencia Open by beating Belgium's Yves Parmentier 6-4, 6-4. The CWLander, whose last outing was a tight straight sets loss to Jason Hall in Shanghai, came back from 2-0 down in the first set and secured the decisive break of serve when Parmentier failed to take advantage of an open court and whipped a forehand volley wide. The second set was much more straight forward as Smeltz earned the break of service early from a double fault, and never looked back as he charged through in straight sets to set up a meeting with Italian qualifier Michael De Kinsele.
  • Unseeded CWLander Jamee Hancianu joins Smeltz in the second round as he overcame a tough start to defeat Macedonia's Vance Stojanovski in straight sets. The qualifier managed to hang on in the first set to be level at 5-5 despite conceeding six break points, but could not save a seventh as Hancianu took the first set 7-5. Stojanovski started the second well with an early break of service, but Hancianu broke back immediately and set up a five-game streak en route to a 7-5, 6-2 win.
  • In the big upset of the round, second seed and world No. 7 József Boros put his World Tour Finals hopes in further doubt as he was stunned by local hope Sanchez Emelio. Emelio played confidently in his 6-3, 7-6(7) victory and saw off three set points in the second set to set up a second round clash with Hancianu. Emelio's doubles partner managed to back up a finals appearance in Vienna last week by defeating eighth seed Tiago Matías 6-4, 7-5. Daniel Páez Blanco also completed a successful day for the locals as he defeated compatriot and occasional doubles partner Sergio Joaquín 6-2, 6-3 in the perfect start for his third tournament inside his home nation.

  • Seeded players out:
    József Boros;
    Tiago Matías.
Davidoff Swiss Indoors
Basel, Switzerland (Indoor Hard)

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)

  • Whilst there was great success for CWLand in Valencia, those in Basel had it much tougher as just one made it through a packed first round field. Jojo Mustard bounced back from a tough loss to Yevgeny Pushkov last week to take a confident straight sets win over veteran Frenchman Jean-Alain Depuis. Depuis, who is still weighing up his future at 36 years of age, managed to claw his way back from 2-5 down in the first set to send it to a tiebreaker. However he could not get the job done as the world No. 30 claimed the tiebreaker 7-5. The second set was neck-and-neck, but Mustard had too much spring in his step for the veteran as he advanced to a very tough second round clash against Almen Benaglio. This Swiss eighth seed had no trouble dispatching wildcard and friend Christophe Haase to the tune of 6-1, 6-0.
  • Partner Heath Davis had a tougher time as he was ousted in straight sets after a convincing performance from seventh seed Carlo Amato. The Italian was made to fight in the first set, but managed to prevail in a tiebreaker after having earlier saved a set point with a booming backhand down the line. From there, the Davis radar was off and slightly reminiscent of what it was at times earlier in the season as Amato coasted through the second set in 23 minutes to set up a clash with Roberto Santos 7-6(4), 6-1.
  • In the top half, Jarkko Maxum put up a good fight against sixth seed Danijel Micic, but could not complete the job as the Serb overcame a scare to prevail in three sets. Growing in confidence, Maxum started the match perfectly by taking the first set 6-4, but failed to capitalise as Micic claimed two breaks in the second set and levelled the match at a set each. Maxum was quickly overpowered by the Serb who, in his first appearance since a final in Shanghai, recovered from a flat start to advance 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
  • A horror end to the season is nearly over for Spas Delev as he continued his downward slump in a straight sets loss to Zoltán Varga. Although Varga earlier lost any chance of qualifying for the World Tour Finals after Rasmus Olesen defeated Zbiginiew Boniek after dropping the first set, he showed some of the form that helped him make the semi finals at Wimbledon as he confidently smashed Delev 7-6(2), 6-1. Delev played well in the first set, but lost control completely in the second and served at just 35 per cent as the Hungarian proved too strong.
  • Scotland Rivers meanwhile failed to upstage fellow qualifier Gjorgji Dinov as he gave up a one-set lead on Monday. Rivers started very brightly to claim the first set 6-2, but was quickly stung by a double break from Dinov who managed to send the match to a deciding third. The Macedonian looked like running away with the match by bringing up two match points at 5-3, but Rivers managed to scrap back and entered the tiebreaker looking the better player. He could not finish the job, though, as Dinov earned a minibreak and clung on for a 2-6, 6-3, 7-6(4) upset.
  • The biggest match of the second round features two top thirty players as Rasmus Olesen looks to further his World Tour Finals aspirations against the enigmatic Diego Hurtado. Elsewhere, top seed Radek Špidlá breezed through his opening match 6-2, 6-4, whilst fellow contenders Darcy Cowan and Rick Henson also made it through their opening clashes unscathed.

  • Seeded players out: None.
Knoxville I Challenger (C)
Knoxville, TN, United States (Indoor Hard)

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)

  • Knoxville, TN plays host to the first Challenger in the United States, and it was Matt Bre who put in the best performance of the CWLanders by crushing Sebastian Moss 6-1, 6-4. Bre was rarely troubled by the British No. 3 and cruised to a second round clash with second seed Julian Day of the US.
  • Elsewhere it will be an all-CWLand clash as Roy Daniels and Mat Mitchell do battle in the second round. Seventh seed Daniels produced one of his best efforts in months to defeat Felipe Pelayo 6-4, 6-2, whilst Mitchell celebrated a successful return to the tour with a 7-6(5), 6-7(4), 6-1 win over Scott Whitehouse. In his first match since a first round loss to Oliver Engel in Luxembourg, the former world No. 55 took some time to find his groove but ultimately proved too strong for the left-hander.
  • Marcuss Deane and Rick Langley met last week in South America, but this week neither made it past the first round North of the equator in some poor showings. The big-serving Deane was right off his game as he was roundly thumped 6-1, 6-1 by third seed Matthew Tobin, whilst fellow qualifier Langley did not do much better as he fell 6-2, 6-2 to Alex Rojas of Chile.

  • Seeded players out:
    Dmitris Chasiotis;
    Pat Hewitt;
    Jimmy Holland.
