CricketWeb Tennis - Season I

Cricketer Of The Year
Hey PTU.

I did see your sign up in the other thread, and no it isn't too late to join. I've taken The Panther's details down and he will debut in the next week of tournaments. I do intend to keep running this, but things are a little bit hectic over the next month so I can't make any guarantees over how soon he'll actually play. :)

I'll step in to assist at the start of season 2, if that's okay SBI. I've got some stuff to sort out with my house which should be done by mid-November. We can discuss then.

Norway's Tom Vollan has claimed his first title of the season with a straight sets victory over Gregor Gorshkov in the final of the Kremlin Cup. The veteran Norwegian's previous best performance came in Sydney back in January where he made the semi finals (losing to Radek Špidlá), but he overcame a horrific midseason slump to perform brilliantly throughout the week. Vollan's scalps included CWLand's Jamee Hancianu and second seed Zoltán Varga, but he saved his best for the final to upstage the local hope Gregor Gorshkov 7-5, 6-3. Gorshkov's first final on the ATP circuit was set up with big wins over Jefferson Drake and Almen Benaglio, but he couldn't do enough to take the big match as Vollan surged inside the world's Top 50 for the first time since May 10. His previous best ranking was No. 19 in January, before an injury-plagued clay season saw him free-fall to No. 69 on Sep. 14.

For CWLand, top seed Jefferson Drake was beaten by Gorshkov in the quarter finals 4-6, 6-7(4). Drake started his week brilliantly by trouncing Zbiginiew Boniek one and two, before coming from a set down to upstage Yordan Zakov. Fifth seed Jamee Hancianu unluckily drew the eventual champion; playing him into form in a woeful performance as he exited 2-6, 3-6. Qualifier Martti Korpinen also fell to Gorshkov first up; the Russian made to struggle for a 7-5, 7-5 win.

In the doubles, Indian fourth seeds Ashim & Seby Kumar claimed their first ATP crown of the season with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sergiy Malachenko & Alexey Yarkin. The Kumars dropped just one set all week (to Drake and Korpinen), and never looked troubled as they waltzed to number 32 and 33 in the world. Jefferson Drake & Martti Korpinen made it to the semi finals before falling 2-6, 6-4, 7-10 to the eventual champs.

Men's Doubles (Draw)

Colombian fourth seed Diego Hurtado has bounced back from a first round exit in Shanghai to claim his second title of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Israel's Tal Cohen. Just a week after falling to Zhenyu Fok in three sets, Hurtado dropped just one set to cruise to his first title since Brisbane in the year's first tournament and into the world No. 24 position. Hurtado faced just one seed over the week; Sergio Joaquín proving no match in a rare hard court semi final for the Spaniard as he fell 3-6, 2-6. Hurtado then made amends for a finals defeat in Gstaad to claim his second title of the season. Cohen meanwhile made the most of an early doubles exit to grind out some tight victories to advance to his first ATP Final, but couldn't get going as Hurtado's powerful forehand took him off the court.

CWLand top seed Sven Oxenstierna produced another ineffective performance as he exited in the second round. The world No. 6 fell in the second round last week in Shanghai, and was forced to come from a set down to defeat Kasper Buur in the first round. In the second, though, he was stunned 5-7, 7-5, 2-6 by Japanese journeyman Ninteh Doh and missed out on a chance push towards the world's top 5. Elsewhere, qualifier Randy Banks was beaten in the second round by Peru's José Navarro. Banks overcame fellow qualifier Massimo Prodi in the first round, but was soundly beaten by the Peruvian No. 1 in his second outing. Spas Delev, however, fell at the first hurdle against Marc Carretero; the Spanish prospect advancing 6-2, 7-5.

Elsewhere, Oneil Stewart made his first appearance on court since the CW Open before falling in the second round. The second seed had suffered with an injury following his stunning run in Nixonstown, and started promisingly with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Javier Villaneuva. Still not at full fitness, he was then outrun by Carretero 4-6, 0-6.

In the doubles final, third seeds Björn Donaldson & Carlos Machado came from a set down to beat the big stories of the week in the form of Johan Engström & Erik Viksten. The local wildcards took stunning wins over the likes of Tal Cohen & Raz Teper and Antonio Bachunelli & Jean-Alain Depuis, but couldn't keep up the pressure against fellow Swede Donaldson and Brazil's Machado as they dropped a one set lead to fall 6-4, 4-6, 4-10.

ATP Doubles Rankings (Race)

ATP Doubles Rankings (End of Year Finals)*

* Because doubles tennis has only been in operation for half of the season, calculation for the End of Year finals will be done upon the following basis:

Top Six qualifiers based on total ATP Race points gained since the French Open (first ranking tournament)
Qualifiers 7 and 8 based on average points gained per tournament (minimum five tournaments)

Ultimately this makes no difference to the current standings, but makes it even more likely the current eight are the ones who will qualify (considering Cohen/Teper fall well behind thanks to countless early exits).

St. Petersberg Open
Saint Petersberg, Russia (Indoor Hard)

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)

  • It was an all-CWLand affair in the first round in St. Petersberg, but it was the sixth seed Heath Davis who prevailed with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Spas Delev. Continuing his good late-season form, Davis was rarely troubled by Delev who will already be looking ahead to season 2 after his form has seemingly dropped off the face of the Earth. Davis was staring at a second round clash with Moscow finalist Gregor Gorshkov, but the unpredictable Russian played poorly and was beaten 3-6, 4-6 by Paolo Mandonna. Davis' doubles partner Jojo Mustard also had little troubles in his first round clash; easing past qualifier Taavi Aleksejev of Estonia to the tune of a 6-4, 6-4 win. Next up is Russian wildcard Yevgeny Pushkov who defeated veteran Vladimir Gryzlov.
  • Second seed Jefferson Drake likewise made it through to the second round without a hitch as he played solid tennis in his 6-3, 6-4 win over Li Ming-Wang of China. Drake fired down nine aces and double that in winners as he produced a confident day of tennis.

  • Seeded players out: None.
Grand Prix de Tennis de Lyon
Lyon, France (Indoor Hard)

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)
  • There were few upsets in first round action in Lyon, with the top seeds all making it through to the second round. World No. 13 Henry Charles survived a scare to escape with a tight 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 win over Lari Färkkilä, whilst Davis Kennedy took until the third set to beat wildcard David Lebègue.
  • The big names to fall were fifth seed Sanchez Emelio (3-6, 4-6 loss to Hayden Onwye) and up-and-down Norwegian Kim Vollan (6-1, 4-6, 5-7 loss to Aksu Emrem). Tom Vollan, the Moscow champion, had more luck than his brother after the flight to Lyon as he advanced 6-4, 5-6, 6-2 over Ross Onwye.

  • Seeded players out:
    Sanchez Emelio;
    Kim Vollan.
Bank Austria TennisTrophy
Vienna, Austria (Indoor Hard)

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)
  • It was a strong first round for CWLanders in Vienna as all but one player advanced to the round of sixteen. Qualifier Matt Bre was first through as he played confident tennis to upstage local wildcard Jürgen Boniek in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Bre now faces a winnable second round clash with fellow qualifier Dênis Rodrigues who came from a set down to upset eighth seed Nilikar Midid.
  • Scotland Rivers continues his surge up the rankings as he moved into the second round with a comfortable 6-1, 7-6(2) win over Julian Day. The American failed to find his rhythm against the aggressive CWLander who continued his good late-season form with a confident victory. The difficulty is amped up next, though, with Canada Masters semi finalist and seventh seed Antonio Bachunelli waiting.
  • A slow start from unseeded CWLander Jarkko Maxum was forgotten as he stole a tight three-set win over sixth seed Jason Bradley. The American looked in complete control early as he took the first set 6-1, but faced a much tougher challenge for the rest of the match as Maxum found his range. Stealing a break of service in the second, Maxum sent it to a decider where he converted his first match point in the tiebreaker to secure a surprising 1-6, 6-4, 7-6(4) win.
  • Unfortunately for Rob Bowenburg, he could not repeat the feat of his doubles partner as he fell short of a win against top seed and world No. 11 Juan Moreno. The Argentine player has struggled badly following his quarter final at Wimbledon, and dropped the second set 2-6 against The Lob who was quickly growing in confidence. But he couldn't continue that form, as the top seed recaptured his class and eased through the decider to advance 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. With two qualifers and a wildcard left in his quadrant, Moreno will hope to take advantage of an easy draw to make a late charge towards the Masters Series.
  • In the stunning upset of the round, third seed Almen Benaglio was thrashed by local wildcard and world No. 132 Martin Reiter. Benaglio was joined in the loser's heap by fourth seed Becker Haas who was beaten 3-6, 6-0, 4-6 by noted hard court struggler Ion Andueza of Spain.

  • Seeded players out:
    Almen Benaglio;
    Jason Bradley;
    Becker Haas;
    Li Wang;
    Nilikar Midid.
Copa Petrobras-Argentina (C)
Buenos Aires, Argentina (Clay)

Men's singles (Seeds - Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
Men's doubles (Draw)
  • At the Buenos Aires Challenger, CWLand newcomers Marcuss Deane and Rick Langley will do battle in the second round for a spot in the quarter finals after both took first round wins. After strong performances in qualifying, Deane faced a tougher task against eighth seed Harry Thompson in a three set affair. The Australian teenager, one of the favourites for next year's first junior Grand Slam, took the first set but continued to struggle against the massive Deane serve as the CWLander fired down eighteen aces to advance 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-4. The Panther was more convincing as he controlled his first match at Challenger level with a 6-1, 6-4 thrashing of Dutchman Cameron van der Cleer.

  • Harry Thompson;
    Néstor Moreno.

Happy enough with that, a win over the world Number 34 is nothing to sneeze at. Unlucky for the Lob, feel free to sit in my players box and heckle the opposition for the remainder of the tournament

Solid win. Looks a decent draw up top. Hoping to face Jojo later in this tournament. Would be excellent.

Great win for Maxum too.
