Bradmans average in contemporary cricket..

I wonder what Bradmans average would have been if he had played in these times when the fielders throw themselves about on the field.......or if he had played his cricket against the pace bowlers of the 80's....could he have sustained his fervour for getting the runs if he had to play the amount of cricket being played these days?

you cant be serious?
It is stupid to even think what it would be. There would be no way to compare how he would go.
On the other hand you could say how would gilchrist go back in bradman's day.
Its simply impossible to know.

Ahhhh but then comes the arguement that Helmets decrease mobility and vision and protective gear can sometimes be restricting...there's an arguement for everything.

I think the best reply comes from the man himself.

In his Kensignton home one day with a bunch of reporters, as usual the topic of how he'd go against current attacks came up. His reply says a lot about him as a man, his modesty AND his confidence :D:

"Well, for one thing, pitches in my day were far superior for batting, not withstanding the occasional sticky wicket. And considering that opposing captains plan their player's dismissals far more than in my day, taking all that into account, I wouldn't have scored as many runs as I did and my average certainly wouldn't have been as high."

"But, I would still have scored more than the gentleman who came second."

:D:D

Every player, in fact every sportsman, has to be compared with his own contemporaries only. And those of them who stood head and shoulders above their contemporaries, would have stood head and shoulders above contemporaries in other eras too since they were basically superior in the traits that make a great sportsman.

The conditions of the times cancel each other out when you remember that they would be as comfortable, or uncomfortable, as their 'new ' contemparies once we are assuming they were born in 'those' times.

What'll annoy him even more is that I haven't even started driving yet so I could be even worse but until I do, I have free license. :cool2:

Bowling now is at an all time low especially in the department of pace. In the 80's or 90's his average would probably been in the 70's. Still way ahead of everyone elses. Bradman said himself that the standard had gone up considerably.
