Best home and away stretch of pacers with 40+ tests or 175+ wickets

Randomfan

We had a thread for the best away stretch by pacers for 25+ tests or 125+ wickets.

Since home and away games are played equally for most, increasing tests by 15 and wickets by 50 is not a harsh cut off for equivalent stretch for home + away. Having said that, if some one has 38 tests or 170 wickets, please point it out. I was just trying to make an equivalent and thought that 40 tests o 175 wickets home and aways is actually not really harsher than what I had for away.

I did not look for longest stretch. I was optimizing for avg to get best avg for 40 plus tests. McGrath just happens to have best accumulative avg lowest after so many tests so his one is long. I found long for Marshall, Amborse etc as well, but just optimized for avg with 40 tests as cut off. All minnows are removed from everyone.

List is not done.

I did not have time to look for all other usual suspects ( Wasim, Waqar, Donald, Lillee, Pollock, Steyn, Davidson etc ), but I will look and add here with updated list.

If you find a better stretch for already listed bowlers, then please point it out. We can update the list.

If you already know the best stretch( non-minnows oppositions) for any bowler not listed above, then please share.

@Swamp Witch Hattie & @Coronis - Any input to make it longer or better will be great. In the best away stretch thread, you both made it better with your inputs.

I think those figures for Hadlee might be messed up @Randomfan (please correct me if I'm mistaken). This is the best that I've been able to find:

Hadlee home and away sub-20.JPG

Longevity: 8 years 9 1/2 months

Matches: 44

Innings: 77

Wickets: 244

WPM: 5.55

WPI: 3.17

Ave.: 19.80

SR: 48.1

5WI: 26

10WM: 6

Sacrificing the sub-20 constraint, there is also this (which I think is more impressive as I feel the gains outweigh the losses):

Hadlee home and away sub-21.JPG

Longevity: 10 years 9 1/2 months (better by 23%)

Matches: 53 (better by 20%)

Innings: 93 (better by 21%)

Wickets: 290 (better by 19%)

WPM: 5.47 (worse by 1.4%)

WPI: 3.12 (worse by 1.6%)

Ave.: 20.30 (worse by 2.5%)

SR: 49.6 (worse by 3.1%)

5WI: 30 (better by 15%)

10WM: 7 (better by 17%, one more tenfer which is very significant because as @capt_Luffy would tell you, Bumrah would give his eye teeth for it)

OK, there's also this for Hadlee which is sub-20 and excellent in other respects as well (percentages again relative to my first graphic, there might be a few rounding errors in these and previous calculations):

Hadlee home and away sub-20_2.JPG

Longevity: 10 years 3 months (better by 17%)

Matches: 48 (better by 9.1%)

Innings: 85 (better by 10%)

Wickets: 269 (better by 10%)

WPM: 5.60 (better by 1.1%)

WPI: 3.16 (worse by 0.13%)

Ave.: 19.93 (worse by 0.7%)

SR: 48.2 (worse by 0.2%)

5WI: 29 (better by 12%)

10WM: 6 (same)

@Swamp Witch Hattie : You are absolutely correct. I did mess up the dates because with the dates I listed, it won't work at all.

Rigth now I tried to find the best again and found the same as you with 19.80. I do remember getting it lower than 19.80 avg stretch while trying many other combinations.

Anyway, Hadlee has sub 20 stretch one way or another. I will try some more. IK was easiest to find due to his good period being distinct but it was reverse for McGrath/Hadlee. If can't find better one, I will update with 19.80 stretch for Hadlee.

If anyone finds a better stretch for above bowlers or find something messed up like I did for Hadlee earlier, please share.

I will keep looking for more pacers with sub 20 stretch against non-minnows.

Waqar's best stretch for 40 plus tests comes 22.xx so even with including SL for entire period it won't drop sub 21. It's safe to not look furher.

Wasim's best stretch for 40 plus tests including SL entire time in stretch comes above 20 so safe to not look futher by trying to remove SL when team was minnow.

Did not expect sub 20 avg due to flat track era, still looked for Steyn. The best Stretch for Steyn is 21.xx so safe to ignore.

If we put the best away stretch side by side,

------------------------------

Total 7 bowlers with sub 20 away avg with 25 tests 25+ tests or 125+ wickets.

  2. Jasprit Bumrah ( 18 Aug 2018 - 15 Jan 2025 ) : 29 tests - 144 wickets - Avg 18.91 - SR 42

  7. Joel Garner ( 18 Feb 1977 - 12 Mar 1987 ) : 29 tests - 136 wickets - Avg 19.74 - SR 50
-------------------------------

Common names in both lists so far:

Marshall
Bumrah
McGrath
Ambrose
Hadlee
Garner

Away list is a shorter one and I expected to be harder. That's why, not a surprise to see all away names, except one, making the cut off for home+away as well.

Names making entry only in Home Stretch:

Imran
Donald
Pollock

Name appearing only in Away:

Davidson
