Lol @ Younis Khan. Would have been more effective batting with chop sticks in NZ conditions.

Batting averages in 4th innings (win the match or save it - most clutch innings)

S Waugh 25.54 (not a typo)
Stokes 33.52
VVS 40.55
G Smith 51.96
Younis K 50.51
King Kane 55.31

Kane certainly had his Stokes moment today by completely bottling/Stokesing it at the crucial moment but winning anyway. The ability to succeed by failing is surely the most important aspect of being clutch.

Have carried on the project started by Raz0r6ack on here of looking at how players did in Tests with runs-per-wicket below average (30.18) and also sub-35 RPW for more balance. Younis struggles.

Answer is Waugh with Smith a close second.

Clutch for me is a match in the balance and can go either way.
I think we should base it on openers first innings average. Match is always in the balance, those boys set the tone!

Disappointed Perera isn’t on the list tbh

Bruce Mitchell has the highest fourth innings average (89), followed by Jeffrey Stollmeyer (86), Burge (76) and Bradman (73). Hunte, McCabe and Vijay Manjrekar are in the sixties. Boycott and Gavaskar average 58 and Hobbs 57.

Others to average under thirty include Steve Smith, all three Ws, Compton, Khawaja and Rohit Sharma.

Nah, I think it depends on match context. 1st innings facing a daunting score is more pressure than 1st innings on a batting wicket.

Williamson has played a number of clutch innings . Not just 4th innings knocks (which imo us a lazy way of looking at things), but match context wise too. His two innings in the wtc final were class too, India mightve had a real chance without them.

His 242* vs SL in 2016?, 100s in the Windies in 2014, and match saving 100 as a youngster against Steyn, Philander, and Morkel, as well as the 100 to set up the series win in the UAE were all clutch. Also some clutch ODI knocks in the 2019 CWC to carry NZ to the final and hitting Cummins over his head for 6 to beat Oz by 1 wicket in the 2015 tournament.

Kane is an interesting one in that he has been very clutch where the match situation dictates that there is a match to be won or to be saved, but pretty poor in the "pressure situations" of facing strong opposition or difficult overseas batting conditions. I'm already hating myself for this post halfway through it, but...if anything that suggests strongly that his poor away record or poor record in various highly-prized overseas environments is not actually a mental issue but very firmly a technique/skill issue
