Stokes had a better peak, but is too reliant on his peak to beat Dev. Cairns' output is similar, but didn't play as frequently as Kapil and would probably need a better record v Australia.
Stokes' peak is a fair bit overrated. Never found success in India or Australia, and overall career, just even qualifies as an all-rounder. Cairns is Kapil but much worse bowler and without longevity.

From 2016-2020, Stokes averaged above 40 with the bat and below 30 with the ball amidst solid hundred&WPM rates. Better at home than away, but so was Kapil. More dominant numbers than Kapil managed across any sustained period. Stokes' bowling petering away has cost him a lot overall. Obviously his batting hasn't gone as far as hoped, but Kapil's away average with the ball never got overly close to dipping below 30 so he clearly had his limitations too. Don't think there's a massive gap qualitively. Kapil's superior longevity is the major tiebreaker.

Don't agree that Cairns is a much worse bowler. He just couldn't get on the park frequently enough.

Friendly reminder that Wisden have annointed Ben Stokes the best cricketer in the world in three different years. Tendulkar only got it twice, Imran and Hadlee once each. And Steve Smith has never been given the title.

Let's just say I don't agree with either thing here. Stokes' bowling load was never high enough personally. I think you forget Kapil is genuinely ATG in WI and Australia and has MOTS in England

Some impressive highlights are rightly acknowledged, but that doesn't mean struggling overall in England, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and New Zealand should be ignored. Stokes himself has been a monster in SAF and has some big bowling feats in Asia.

Around 2.5WPM @ 27.6 in the specified period for Stokes is very solid to say that was marginally his second suit. He did a lot of good work with the old ball. Big spells and partnership snaps. Would be a big call to not take that over Kapil's batting.

I'm not disputing that Kapil is ahead, but I don't think he was in a different league to Cairns and Stokes in terms of quality.

I will end with I will take Kapil between 79-83 over any period of Cairns or Stokes. Took 234 wickets over that period.

I think Stokes 2016-2020 was considerably better than Kapil 1979-1983 in their secondary suits. Not convinced Kapil is dominant enough in their stronger suits to turn it around.
