I actually think the opposite. Flintoff clearly ahead in ODIs but closer in Tests.

Fielding and captaincy isn't enough to overcome that "miles" gap that you mentioned.

Yes, but Jayasuriya was a very poor test opener - couldn't play the moving ball and a million times worse than the likes of Karunaratne.
