Not saying we don't count his best stuff, but it's pretty much only that is my point.
And where did Imran averaged under 25 again? Sri Lanka?? Ambrose averages less than Imran in every single away country; and while I would admit Imran's record in West Indies is more impressive than Ambrose's in Pakistan; they virtually have the same average in those countries as tourists.

Averages can be misleading in Ambrose case since it hides that he wasn't taking wickets or impacting matches much many times he still averaged low.

I prefer Imran over Ambrose but this is tougher.

We may say Ambrose but outside excellence in Australia/England he has only 36 wickets in 12 tests. That is pretty moderate returns. .So it is close.
I know you believe that everyone sees the SC as the ultimate measuring stick, but I want you to guess for me which two countries were most important for those in the Caribbean to play against and defeat.

Hint, it was the two we scheduled most to play against.

And again, the best team of the era.

Starting to think he's the goat bowler. His numbers in the last 11-12 years of his career are amazing, despite the lack of support. If NZ played more Tests his level would truly stand out imo.
Genuine question, do we believe he was helped or hindered by the lack of tests?

Given his work load, it may have been an assitance, but also didn't get to show fully what he could do?

Hadlee and Murali are in a solo superman world / category all by themselves and it's hard to argue against either. Me personally and for reasons no one would agree with I prefer McGrath to him for my no. 2 spot but it's awful close between all 3.

This is silly. Yes, the best batting lineup is an important measuring stick, by which they both succeeded, but the whole point of this question in a sense is to see how they fare in different conditions. It is why Marshall is the greatest of all.

Based on my observations of both playing in 3 series in Oz, it is clear that Ambrose was a vastly superior bowler. Ambrose played 14 Tests taking 76 wickets @ 19.78 compared with Imran's 45 wickets @ 28.51 in 13 Tests. To Imran's credit, he performed well in his last visit with 13 wickets at just under 20.

Ambrose in Australia is probably the best bowler to tour there, no doubt.
