Ambrose was fantastic against top oppositions in 90s in their dens.

Pacers in away tests involving top 5 teams.

Some point out to include performance in Eng for historic importance,

Ambrose has 129 wickets Avg 21.2 with 10 5-fers.

Even with home+ away against top 5 + Eng, Ambrose record is fantastic.

I’m curious do you only use this single stat that you keep posting in every thread to rate players?

If players have vastly different outputs and tiers then no need to look at performance versus top teams over all or in their dens.

Comparing players with similar career record, I put heavy emphahsis on seeing if players stepped up against top teams and in tough tours. If some one simply has high stats based on bashing weaker teams/minnows/only at home , all of them I rate much lower.

Many also have outsized number of tests against minnows/weaker teams, no harm in that. You can only play who are in front of you. I don't penalize them for that, but I look performance against top teams over all and in their dens. If you fall far behind your peers group in tough tours then you don't belong in tier 1 discussion no matter what yours career stats says.

The only argument that you could make is that his record in Asia wasn't as good as Donald or McGrath.

Mcgrath did not have a great record in Asia in 90s.

I think it's a fair criticism of Ambrose for not having meaningful record outside of Pakistan in Asia. Only place he has meaningful record - Pakistan for 5 tests with 15 wickets at avg of 25. SL was one test in early 90s.

McGrath in Asia in 90s:
