All-time Great XI - Voting system

International Coach
Dear CWers,

I am designing a product called All-time Great XI where visitors / members will be able to vote for their best players for every test & ODI playing nations. We will select 25 to 30 players from each nation and put it in the system with respective attributes. Instead of giving the team combination choice to the user, I have decided to plan it from our end so the visitors can pick their favorite XI on the basis of planned dynamics. (i.e., West Indies do not have 2 legend All-rounders so no point letting the visitors go for 2. SAF and Australia does have ATG all-rounders so visitors will be able to pick 2 ARs in their team.

On the basis of these votes we will make 2 ATG teams. One vote for that particular nation and the same vote will be counted towards the player as well. We are dividing the test teams like this > Openers, Middle order batsmen, all-rounder(s), wicketkeeper, bowlers. This will help us determine the best opening pair, middle order bats, all-rounder(s), wicketkeeper and bowlers for the universal All-time Great XI as well.

Voters will be allowed to change their vote at any given time as well.

Here are the initial short listed players:

Nissar in place of either Ashwin or Pathan

And Kallis should be listed as all-rounder

I have made some adjustments to maintain the balance of the teams hence moved Kallis as the batsman but yeah I think he can be shifted to All-rounders so people can select Nourse in their team as well.

Waite <> Richardson, done!
Garner <> Daniel, done!
Nissar <> Ashwin, done!

A few proposed additions and changes, that you can take or ignore as you wish. :)

Australia – add Sid Barnes to openers, add Clem Hill to middle-order batsmen, add any or all of Jack Blackham, Bert Oldfield, Don Tallon and Wally Grout to ‘keepers, add Charlie Turner to bowlers.

England – add WG Grace and Geoff Boycott to openers, add Godfrey Evans to ‘keepers, add Brian Statham to bowlers, add Wilfred Rhodes somewhere.

West Indies – move Frank Worrell to middle-order players to give him a chance to be selected (he’s a better bat than many of the players already there, and no one is going to pick him over Sobers as an all-rounder), add Sonny Ramadhin and Alf Valentine to bowlers.

South Africa – add Gary Kirsten to middle-order players, add Jock Cameron to ‘keepers, add Bert Vogler and/or Reggie Schwarz to bowlers.

India – looks about right to me, though I’d be tempted to add Tiger Pataudi as specialist captain.

Pakistan – tempted to add Saeed Ahmed to batsmen, but generally I reckon that’s pretty much spot on.

New Zealand – add Stewie Dempster to openers, add Martin Donnelly to middle-order batsmen, move John R Reid to all-rounders and add Bruce Taylor there as well, add Ken Wadsworth to ‘keepers, add Richard Collinge, Dick Motz and Trent Boult to bowlers.

Sri Lanka – move Sanga to the specialist batsmen rather than weigh him down with the ‘keeping duties, add Roy Dias to middle-order batsmen.

Zimbabwe – add all Zimbabwean-born players who’ve turned out for England (or anyone else), just for funsies.

Bangladesh – move…meh, who cares?

Will consider this after taking a nod from at least one more CWer:

Sanga > Move to the middle order pool
Worrell > I did consider it but West Indies has one of the strontest middle order in Headley, Lara and Richards so I strongly doubt anyone will pick him so I decided to give Sobers some competition ;)
Grace, Boycott or Gooch > Only one of these 3 can be there so pick one.
Blackham, Tallon, Grout, Oldfield > Give me 2 of these 4
Wadsworth, Parore added to keepers for Kiwis
Motz, Boult added to bowlers for Kiwis

Jessie Ryder should be removed from opener.
BJ Watling should be added as keeper.

On the basis of these votes we will make 2 ATG teams. One vote for that particular nation and the same vote will be counted towards the player as wel
What does this mean?

Also, I know it doesn't really matter and now it would be time consuming, but I think the names should be alphabetical order. Seems to me that the better players are at the start of majority of the lists.

1) Worrell > I did consider it but West Indies has one of the strontest middle order in Headley, Lara and Richards so I strongly doubt anyone will pick him so I decided to give Sobers some competition ;)

2) Grace, Boycott or Gooch > Only one of these 3 can be there so pick one.

3) Blackham, Tallon, Grout, Oldfield > Give me 2 of these 4
1) Nah, give him back to the middle order. He has more of a chance to get picked that way.

2) Grace, of course.

3) Tallon and Oldfield

Also, chuck out one of Bob Willis and James Anderson to make way for Wilfred Rhodes (either as an all-rounder or as a bowler) :)

No Jack Cowie in the NZ bowlers? Stewie Dempster surely worth a shout too. Clem Hill and Syd Barnes too. Or even Woodfull, for his captaincy.

Gah, I suggested Dempster and Donnelly but forgot about Cowie. Good shout.
