AB de Villiers vs Virat Kohli vs Joe Root vs Kane Williamson in Tests

Joe Root. Has more than 11000 test runs and apart from Aus has decent record everywhere. If he can improve his record in Aus then it would be better. Kane Williamson is a home track bully. His away record is not good. Failed in SA, Ind, Eng and doesn't have a very good record in Aus. So even in away he smashes minnows. Virat is someone who was the best till 2019 but his poor form in test has affected his records. Struggles in Eng and NZ. Doesn't have a very good in sl, wi and Bangladesh. If you fail in 5 countries then you cannot be considered as test legend. And AB was one of the best but retired too early. But still I will rate him better than Kohli and Kane. So for me Root>AB>Kohli(due to his perfomance in Aus) > Kane.

Agree with your take. Pre covid Kohli was probably better than all of them. Shame his test career slump been going on for ages now not sure he’ll ever get it back in tests

yeah there was no comparison between pre covid kohli and root but then it just exchanged and Root has grown his stature in tests.

Kohli had a tremendous peak and could've ended up the best of them if his 2016-19 form continued for a few more years. It's Root for now because he fixed his hundred problem and has a way better away record than Kohli and KW. Hard to tell who'll end up with the best career overall by the end but it's hard to not think Root has the best chance because he's a good few years younger.

Ignoring AB who is a different gen, in the last 10 years:

Root: 126 tests; 10,777 runs @ 50.83
Kohli: 92 tests; 7,380 runs @ 50.20
Williamson: 69 tests; 6,739 runs @ 64.79

Say all you like about home vs away records, but it is crazy that most of you put KDub last.

Incidentally, AB (2013-2018):
29 tests; 2,401 runs @ 51.08

Root edges over AB against spin and swing.
AB edges over Root against bounce and seam.
Root edges over AB overall as he has played more matches. But AB didn't play tests for two years in his peak.
