ODI Bowlers Poll - discussions

Line and Length

International Coach
Rather than clutter our voting thread with comments, this thread is where members can discuss voting trends and state the case for players they see worthy of inclusion. This worked well with previous polls, so it makes sense to continue the practice.
I particularly look forward to reading differing points of view.

Wasim, Garner, McGrath are all getting decent amount of votes to be the GoAT. Will be interesting to see who comes at the top.

As with the ODI batting poll, it would appear that longevity (games played) is a big factor when it comes to voting. However, Wasin Akram receiving more than 5 times the votes received by Richard Hadlee seems out of kilter.

Because the nature of the ODI game has changed quite dramatically over the decades, it is difficult to compare players from different eras.
Thus far, players from past eras have dominated bowling.
The most recent player to receive votes would be Mitchell Starc. His bowling average compares favorably to those already voted in but his Strike Rate (26.69) is way better than others. In this regard, McGrath (34.04) is the best of those in the Top Six.
On the other side of the coin is the fact that all in the Top Six have economy rates under 4rpo while Starc's is 5.26.

The moment they introduced two balls per innings is where I draw the line. Batsmen are pu$sies

To what extent does a player's profile influence voting? Thus far we have some big names heading our list yet there is a lesser-light with over 100 ODIs, a better average than Wasim, Starc and Pollock and an economy rate <4 yet he has barely rated a mention. Who? Ewan Chatfield.

And his name misspelt...

(No offence intended)

Re Chatfield I put him 4th amongst NZ seamers behind Hadlee-Bond-Boult but ahead of Mills and Henry.

Superb bowler though.

It's interesting to take a look at this list:

Obviously dominated by batters. But Hadlee is a standout with an PotM every 11.5 matches. That's better than some of top ODI batsmen. Good on this forum to have the good sense to rank him in top 5. Most other places they won't even think of him.

Another standout is Starc with an award every 10.5 games. He could easily have been ranked higher. Though his high ER is probably why he isn't.

This poll is a bit of an eyeopener for me in that I have been forced to look into more ODI bowlers than I would normally check. I guess my concentration on Tests has meant I've missed some fine performances over the years.
As a result, I have temporarily left Chatfield out of my recent voting, having realised others had even better credentials. I'm hoping that we extend this list to 30 and E.C. finds a slot. He's worthy of inclusion.

The batsmen went for 40, I would like the bowlers to get the same treatment.

Richard Hadlee is voted #5 after taking 158 wkts in 115 ODI's with 1 4fer and 5 5fers

Meanwhile, Trent Boult has taken 211 wkts in 114 ODI's with 10 4fers and 6 5fers.

Time for some Boult in top 20

As far as I can tell, these 3 have the highest wkts per match in ODI history

1. Shami - 1.92 wpm
2. Starc - 1.92 wpm
3. Boult - 1.85 wpm

Really surprised about Shami (wins on 3rd decimal)
