It's more about precedent and less about spirit. What if SA still lost the Cup with AB (very much possible)? How would selectors react when another elite player demands the same treatment 16 years hence?

There can't be much compulsion. If the next player to do so is not as awesome as AB, selectors can always not select him. I don't know if every tom dick and harry will assume they have a claim to similar treatment as AB.

ABdV was rightly not picked because it would have created more problems than it would have solved long term. Him being in this team would not have won us this WC as great a player as he is but could have created an argument for favouritism and issues at selection level. SA need to rebuild from scratch with as little angst as possible.

On a side note, it would be hilarious to watch Afridi bat against current Pak fielding unit. A guy who always wants to get out against a bunch who would never catch anyone out.
