2023-24 Australian domestic cricket season

Bancroft making runs here unequivocally a net negative for Australian cricket
The fact that he went 20 odd innings without passing 50 across his county stint and Aus-A exploits recently should automatically leave him at the bottom of the pecking order, but guarantee you a 100 here puts him in the test squad.

Edit: Not discrediting his efforts here, FYI. This is a very good victorian bowling attack and he's done well. Nice to see wyllie get some runs versus a near test standard attack as well.

WA should be docked points for scoring so slowly. Vics did the right thing leaving out ChandraSNAILe

Big fan of Beau Webster as a cricketer. Can't see him every being seriously considered for national honours but he's the kind of versatile Shield cricketer you love to have at your disposal. Aggressive middle-order bat, brilliant slipper, handy off-spinner and can bowl big tall seam up in helpful conditions
Was thinking the same. I wonder if he's getting close? His form and consistency has improved enough for consideration.

I feel like he is just lacking and needs to make a leap in one aspect of his cricket, probably his batting. If he can average 45-50 for a shield season or 2 and keep picking up regular poles he has to be in the reckoning. Only thing is there are at least half a dozen other all rounders in the same boat, and most of them like Hardie, Sutherland are a lot younger (I think)

Edwards has just put in a better performance than Webster ever has, he’s in the system and plays for the right state

Bancroft tears it up meanwhile Jewell goes for a 2nd innings duck. Nothing upsetting the pecking order in the competition for Warner's spot.

But up until this round their bowling stats weren't too dissimilar. Webster with the better batting stats and improving.

Pucovski shouldn't be within a million miles of the Test team until he can prove he can actually string a consistent run of Shield cricket in

At least a (close to) full season is needed before he should be even vaugely considered again

Hopefully he can do that this season. He was never playing this summer anyway, hopefully we're only looking for 1 replacement opener after this summer is over. I'd pick Bancroft infront of Marcus fn Harris tho

**** openers we just need to pick a gun batsman that might be able to do the job and make them open. Our best openers of the last couple decades haven't even been openers until that was the position that needed filling.

Watson, Katich, Khawaja. Even Warner wasn't really an opener. Langer was technically a makeshift opener too but I believe he had done it for WA.

Sure but there aren’t many options

Who’s scoring a lot of fc runs that could open?

I literally have more faith in Wade than most others & that would be absurd

What about Cam Green, might even be the kick up the ass he needs. Similar to what we did with Watson in 2009

when Usman/Warner are gone:

Green
Pucovski (or a more reliable human)
Marnus
Smith
Head
Mitch Marsh
Carey

Head might want to do it but I loathe to move him at home tbh.

Also, while definitely not an ideal choice, if Mitch Marsh is doing it in ODIs there's no reason he can't on flatter home Test pitches. And he can't do any worse than Harris/Bancroft did on overseas wickets
