*Official* England in the West Indies 2024

I doubt whether it would take a couple of years if Stokes calls it a day after the next Ashes.

Indeed. But if I'm reading between the lines correctly, Curran may be coming to the same conclusion nowadays.

*Official* England in the West Indies 2024

I hope Curran aspires to higher than top 7 levels with his batting. I read a piece a few weeks ago where he described himself as 'a bit gutted' that he wasn't considered to replace Stokes in the SL tests. I suppose some would see that as presumptious, but I was happy to read that he was...

This strikes me as a very good thing. And possibly a couple of years overdue.

Bellingham was very good once he'd got the yellow card behaviour out of his system. Another example of how he has the ability to impose himself on a game when his side needs it.

Without checking the figures at all, Curran's batting seems to have stepped up to the plate in this tour. Or at least, there seems to have been a number of handy contributions when the situation demanded.

Probably not even a discussion nowadays. The saddest thing about Jacks is that his game appears to have deteriorated rather than kicked on over the last couple of years. Jacks certainly shouldn't be in the CT side, assuming that Duckett, Root, Brook and Buttler are available. Anyway, cracking...

I thought we had been improving, but we've been outclassed today since scoring those two early tries. I was told that this isn't supposed to be an especially good Austalian side, but they're looking good for a final winning margin of 20+ this afternoon. EDIT Timing, as they say. @ripper868...

How much does captaincy impact results?

The other thing that struck me is that sometimes there's a time gap between the impact of captaincy on the side's results. Tony Greig springs to mind on that front. If memory serves, England won 3 tests out of 15 under his leadership. Not great if we don't look beyond the bare statistics...

How much does captaincy impact results?

If the 1974/75 Ashes had been 12 months earlier (yeah I know, it wouldn't have been 1974/75), Ian Chappell would have been leading Aus without Lillee and Thomson at his disposal and I don't think we're looking at a 4-1 win. I'm sure he was a terrific captain, but luck can play such a big part...
