    **Official** England in New Zealand 28 Nov-18 Dec 2024 - 3 Tests

NZ Cricket are posting highlight snippets on social media with automated subtitles that replace “Will O’Rourke” with “Willow Rook”. Sounds less like a dangerous quick bowler and more like a small country town librarian who is looking for love in some trashy TV drama.

It is really sad that Southee, who has had such a great career, is ending it this way. I have been such a fan, and now it feels like he is a piece of old chewing gum that I just cannot scrape off my shoe. His last two years have really soured my view of him as a cricketer.

    Mundane sightings of high-profile cricketers

I just saw David Boon coming out of a lift in my hotel. Which, given I am staying in Wellington, has easily been my cricket-related highlight of the weekend.

    **Official** England in New Zealand 28 Nov-18 Dec 2024 - 3 Tests

My recollection of Patrick O’Rourke was that he ran very hot or very cold. He would be bowling well for Wellington, but the second international honours were being mentioned he would break down or start bowling absolute trash. This is based on very faulty memory though, rather than bothering to...

Afghanistan v New Zealand - Only Test

    What an absolute fiasco.

    Cricketing politicians

Also in Wellington, former test opener and nude spin bowler John “Mystery” Morrison was a local Council representative.

    Rachin -The Kiwi wonderkid

Yep. I’m not completely opposed to lease arrangements like that when they are genuinely in the public interest, but the obvious conflicts of interest in this case made it stink.

    Rachin -The Kiwi wonderkid

I moved to a small town 3 years’ ago. One other factor is that things like Community Boards are run by the sports’ clubs. We also have a “Lands Trust” that holds vast swathes of public land “for the benefit of everyone in town”. The Trust board is stacked with members of the rugby club, and...

*Official* New Zealand in Bangladesh 2023/24

I am looking forward to watching Will O’Rourke bowling on this wicket. The bounce might suit Ashok as well.

    NZ domestic season 2023/24

I see Joey Field is back playing for CD. I thought he looked a good prospect before his injury. Tall, uncomplicated action and got good bounce bowling hard into the deck. Going on this game, he still looks to be lacking a bit of the spark he had two seasons ago. And hair. He has definitely lost...

Has he shaved off his moustache? Maybe he looks too young to be in the national side any more?

    NZ domestic season 2023/24

Presumably this is why high performers weren’t selected… https://i.stuff.co.nz/sport/cricket/301026802/sons-grandsons-of-black-caps-feature-in-new-zealands-under19-squad-for-world-cup …because they didn’t have the right family connections to the right people.

    NZ domestic season 2023/24

It was actually pretty disappointing to see a bunch of FC batsmen swinging fairly wildly at Ashok, despite their team being well behind and needing to consolidate. None of the seven wickets looked jammy, but a few did look very unnecessary.

I remember Douglas took an unbelievable catch in one of those Shell Cup games. I would love to see a replay to see if it still stands up against today’s standards. If I recall correctly he was at short cover and caught a full blooded drive diving full length to one side (his right?). In the...

Did you mean Collinge? Maybe. It was before my time, but I seem to recall Collinge’s performance in the 1977/78 test described somewhere as the final act of his career. Probably in Christopher Martin-Jenkins Who’s Who of Test Cricket because I pretty much had the NZ section of that memorised...

And based solely on the fact that his career finished in 1978, I am going to guess the other bowler is Richard Collinge. I am pretty sure his last first-class match was the famous test victory over England in 1977/78.

It will be really interesting to see what commentary team TVNZ pulls together. I hope it includes Katey Martin, Craig Cumming and Grant Elliott for starters. Stephen Fleming would also be great, but I guess his other commitments would limit his availability. Frankie MacKay is not bad, and I...
