ODIs : Kapil Dev vs Imran Khan

Again you are ignoring that this is an incredibly bowling friendly era where teams are regularly being bundled for 150 or less against quality attacks. Being able to build an innings and ensure it lasts the full 50 overs was considered the most important task.

ODIs : Kapil Dev vs Imran Khan

But the middle order role is more valuable. If you look at Imran's batting positions, his averages goes up as he goes up the order, but scoring rate naturally goes down as the times dictated. This almost feels like penalising him for being too competent a bat that Kapil was not.

ODIs : Kapil Dev vs Imran Khan

In the context of the 80 era, the former if it's in the middle of the innings. That era regularly saw teams go for sub 200, that's why. We are having a bias based on putting current era standards for the past. Imran was capable of batting anywhere in the top 5, which meant he would need to...

ODIs : Kapil Dev vs Imran Khan

That RPI difference is fairly notable. And you didn't address my argument. By the standards of the era, Imran was capable of holding fort regularly in the top six, shoring the innings from overs 20 to 40 and preventing collapse, which was considered more valuable than late order blasting, which...

    Brian Lara vs Jacques Kallis

I would have McGrath or Tendulkar in my side easily over Kallis, sorry. Being among the best specialists is more valuable.

    Dale Steyn vs Brian Lara

Lara edges it IMO. Steyn was great but Lara was a genius and achieved feats no other bat could do.

ODIs : Kapil Dev vs Imran Khan

Yeah but you are ignoring era context which was more bowling friendly and lower scoring. That era valued middle order conservative batting to build a platform much more than end innings late order hitting. The former through partnerships and blunting the bowling helped ensure competitive...

ODIs : Kapil Dev vs Imran Khan

A 10 point average difference is too big to sway regardless of scoring rate frankly or eve if you think it's a tad inflated.

ODIs : Kapil Dev vs Imran Khan

Imran was too for most of his career though except the fag end. 50 games is only a minor portion of Kapils career. Looks at Imran's stats from the 80s when he averaged 22 with the ball and 33 with the bat over 124 games...

Combining ODI and Test records, who are the 5 greatest cricketers ever?

Marshall until his last three years was averaging 23. He really declined badly, similar to Imran. https://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/player/52419.html?class=2;spanmax1=31+Dec+1988;spanval1=span;template=results;type=allround

ODIs : Kapil Dev vs Imran Khan

Imran a better bat and bowler. Imran until the last three years when he played as a bat was a worldclass bowler. Imran as a bat even until then could bat in the top six, unlike Kapil, and was capable of.hitting sixes if needed.

    Dale Steyn vs Viv Richards

    The former is better.

Combining ODI and Test records, who are the 5 greatest cricketers ever?

I think that's my issue. LOI cricket in his time didn't really have the profile outside of big tournaments.

Combining ODI and Test records, who are the 5 greatest cricketers ever?

Hadlee isnt ATG in ODI. Great stats but I cant recall him winning anything major.
  15. S

Viv vs Lara vs Smith: Who has the best series performances?

Not according to the Wisden, which describes Lillee with less pace but more clever as a bowler in that series.

Combining ODI and Test records, who are the 5 greatest cricketers ever?

For me, WC success is essential to be rated among the top ODI players.
  17. S

Combining ODI and Test records, who are the 5 greatest cricketers ever?

Gilly and Imran should be higher.
  18. S

Combining ODI and Test records, who are the 5 greatest cricketers ever?

He is an underrated ODI cricketer. Better to look at him as a 23 average bowler and 27/28 average bat who can either smack or accumulate. His batting was more to build innings in a slower era.

Combining ODI and Test records, who are the 5 greatest cricketers ever?

Even though Viv is a better ODI cricketer, giving more weightage to tests would make it Tendulkar as the best.

Combining ODI and Test records, who are the 5 greatest cricketers ever?

Yeah Wasim was a lock for a top 5 ODI cricketer. Imran better in tests but it's really tough and go.
