"Best ever" teams selected by former players or experts- whose is best?

...a series of breathtaking innings in Sheffield Shield cricket. After that Richards was generally acknowledged as the world's best until his namesake Viv began his great run in 1976. You will find many journalists and players stating that Hutton was the world's best batsman after Bradman's...

    Test Cricket's 25 Greatest Smiths

...the calypso back to Caribbean cricket with a wonderful debut century. Smith had been given a surprise opportunity - ahead of his Grenadian namesake Devon - when Marlon Samuels flew home with a knee injury. It was rumoured that Viv Richards had recognised something of himself in the stance of...

SF Barnes and his Australian namesake should each have played more times for their respectively countries too. More recently Brad Hodge, famously the owner of the worst personality...

    *Official* English Football Season 2012-13

As long as the end score of the game is the same, i'll take it. :p A 4-3 win to United and a game like that will cause a few heart attacks, but we'll still go through.

    *Official* English Football Season 2012-13

...very easily have won it as well, given the chances they missed in the last quarter. My fear for MU is that Ronaldo is now set to match his namesake's performance at Old Trafford all those years ago when he single-handedly saw off the challenge from MU and left the pitch to a standimg...

    Whinging Poms?

...pages of Wisden; England's attack practically reads like a who's who of our postwar bowling greats and, on paper, at least looks a match for the home battery. & another (near) namesake for that thread: John Mortimore, who didn't create such a compelling case for the defence as Rumpole might've.

    Wicketkeeping standards

I may be being thick, but how can... ... possibly lead to the conclusion that the mystery man is a test cricketer?

    Wicketkeeping standards

Yes. I think thats it. These earlier posts of JBMac confirm it . . . and I think that bit about being reduced to an "arm chair umpire" is an oblique reference to his being one of the first international match referees.

More of a CW namesake but there's a guy at my uni called Robert Cribb. Weirds me out.

Hurricane/Wayne - Fizzing at the Bung

...close to actually becoming that before I was born, so it seemed logical to me. But yeah, the whole talented bits and pieces cricketer who the selectors use to turn a strength into a weakness thing does make the name very apt. Hopefully I perform closer to my potential than my namesake though.

**Official** South Africa in England 2012

Much as my namesake probably deserves a Michelle, Fat Gray has to give the leggie a trundle soon, surely? EDIT: Ha, D'oh. Not the captain's finest few moments.

Group B Discussion - Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Portugal

Does look like he's having an increasingly affectionate relationship with the pies, Cristiano. Not at the level of his bucktoothed Brazilian namesake, but has definitely filled out since he's gone to Madrid.

Would Stuart Broad make the world's strongest XI?

My only - and this really is a very minor - concern with this attack makeup (which ftr is probably the same one I'd pick) is that in the pace department you're going to have a few issues with left-handed openers, of whom there are a somewhat ridiculous amount around at the moment (Cook, Strauss...

Would Stuart Broad make the world's strongest XI?

Yeah definitely agree with all of this. Except the last bit :p.

Would Stuart Broad make the world's strongest XI?

Thankyou Brumby. Completely agree with this. I have been saying it for ages and yet I get stick for going with Broad, Steyn and Philander by quite a few English posters. I disagree about the spinner though. Ajmal's deliveries look so much better. :p

Would Stuart Broad make the world's strongest XI?

...ways through the air. Despite Jimmeh's undoubted improvement, Steyn's figures, both overall and more recent, are better. So I'd go with my namesake. It's true Philander has only played seven tests, but he's taken 51 wickets at a tick over 14 each. Leaving him out would be "bloke who rejected...

    CW All-Time XI Openers

The legend of Barry Richards is based mainly on his first class career and he stint in WSC. But the average of 72 doesn't hurt either. He was seen by many as the second best bat of his generation after his namesake.

    Mohammad Sami vs Ishant Sharma

Sami and his relative namesake Sammy are the best example of why a bowler first needs some consistency in line & length over all olther things in order to forge a decent test career.
